I am not convinced. Leica says that the number one used focal length on M cameras is 35mm. 50mm is second. Building the new camera with either of those classic focal lengths would tend to lose the other. 43mm splits the baby and can be seen as a small compromise by either. I think Leica made a good business decision with the 43mm.
+1 regarding split the diff.
I've been a 40/45 fan for a long time, going back to using my M645 glass on EF mounts. Currently, I've got the 40 Summicron-C ... and as I've been considering the investment into an SL APO lens ... the choice between 35 or 50 has been a bit challenging to decide (that, coupled with if I want the size / weight of the SL APO's).
The prospect of a 43 APO lens in the Q3 43 sits smack in the middle (+8 / -7) of that 35/50 range. And, optically (in theory) it is trigonometrically correlated to the sensor diagonal of the 3:2 FF format. So, I think the combination of mathematical optics and strategic application between the 35/50 ... which coincidentally, is also a 1.5x focal length step from the 28mm of the original Q ... it is a trifecta of reasons for going with the 43mm focal length in the "next step" of the fixed lens Q series.

I've not shot 40mm previously, but I love 35 and 50 pretty much equally - 50 a bit more if my arm was twisted. I had a feeling the 43 would be a perfect in between for my eye and I'm incredibly pleased with it. The Q will be a perfect companion when I don't want to bring the SL3 and lenses.
Have already taken some beautiful portraits and architectural detail shots with it. The 2.0 is getting some nice separation.

As someone who relatively recently re-discovered the 43mm focal length (55V on a X2D), I am pretty sure that lot's of people who've shot 50 or 35 will also *discover* it. It's weird for a day and the entirely natural. Personally I'm absolutely stoked it's 43mm.
Having said that I'm sure the choice was a careful one by Leica for different reasons. Make a 50mm and piss off the 35mm camp. And less chance of interfering with 35mm and 50mm sales in other systems.

Hugh Brownstone is a legitimate and authentic person. This esthetic comes across strongly in his YouTube channel. He is worth watching for sure. I had the pleasure of shooting with Hugh and his Wife Claudia. His images refect his disciplined perspective on the World. On the other hand Claudia's images are very non technical and emotional in nature. They are wonderful in this respect. She knows little about the technical aspects of the cameras she uses. I wish Hugh's channel had more of her images included.
His videos are just him talking the entire time without showing the gear he's talking about. It's difficult to watch the entire video. I think it would be more interesting if there is more diversity in his videos.

As a happy Q3 owner, does anyone else feel like we just need an updated RX1R with a better but same size 35mm f2 lens with slightly bigger body and improved battery life? I know why Leica doesn't want to do make 35mm Q because 35mm is too close to 28mm. I have been looking at pictures of the Q43. The 43mm FL seems to render closer to 50mm than 35mm.

I always want to be able to choose MY focal length, but to me it depends mostly on the actual situation. I like 50 just fine, but often it’s just too close. Hence, I’d have trouble nailing down a preferred focal length esp. one that comes with a $7000 price tag and is pretty limited, compared to wide angle.

I shoot portraits/model shoots with gfx+gf55, for a year now, and it is my favorite lens by far, but it still feels a bit weird. The right solution for me is probably two cameras, one with 35mm, another one with 85mm (in 35mm format). This is how I used to shoot in the past.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen his images, but I do know his manner of speaking on his videos drives me nuts. Hence, I don’t watch anymore. Just like many others on YT.

I think this is the result of him trying to do his reviews differently than the rest of the YouTube community. He is very purposeful in this regard, and understands it will not be for everybody.

The most common thing about YT video gear reviews is the "talking head", though. I don't see his videos as unique in any way other than what his personality imparts to them. Even then, I wish he would speak more casually. I feel like I'm watching Walter Cronkite deliver the evening news when he is talking.

I understand what you are saying about his speaking cadence. It took me a while to get used to it as well. I spoke to him about the cadence he uses once. He says he developed and practiced it on purpose, including the vocabulary. It is unique and probably not for some. He also has a unique vocabulary and approach to discussing and reviewing images. Again, it will not be for some people. But valuable to get a different approach to this in this often cookie curter World of sameness.
One thing I do like about his approach is he doesn't claim false neutrality in his views. He has strong points of views and biases. He embraces that, and is not shy about commiting support to products that fit his personal preferences. This while being open and receptive to those with opposing viewpoints. This shows up mostly when in personal contact with him. On his channel and in his workshops he is playing on his own turf.

I fully understand what you are saying. My view is definitely colored by my personal interactions with him. I sometimes have opposed his approach and viewpoints, but our interactions have always been sincere, productive, polite, and enjoyable. I like him as a person, and so am likely biased in this respect.

He does seem like all of that.
I think his videos sometimes give me PTSD because it's too much like hearing my own internal obsessive thoughts over possible pathways to gear selection

It’s clear it’s not natural. I used to work in television and sometimes the presenters would switch to their on-screen persona and it was just weird (and this was Holland, in the US, I bet it’s weirder). Same for Maarten Heilbronn, who’s overly happy in his videos. I can just tolerate that.

I'm with you... A 50 lux would be far more compelling, providing more differentiation from the standard Q, while attracting many photogs that love 50mm... I would be willing to bet it would be an easier sell than a 43.
I think that there are a lot of people who want a 50mm Q and are okay with a 43mm (better than nothing) plus a lot of people who don’t have/want a 28mm Q (such as me) because it’s too wide for them and don’t want a 50mm lens as their only lens/camera when traveling for example. 43mm is better than 50mm in this regard. I also bought the Ricoh GRX because the 28mm version is too wide for me. The 40mm of the GRX are really very versatile. That’s also why so many people (even Fred Miranda) say that the 40mm Batis could be there only lens.

But, see, I have both Ricoh GRIIIs and still don’t know which one is the one to carry. At least, with the Q28 you have enough cropping capacity to cover both focal lengths. And it has a real viewfinder, which the Ricohs sorely lack.

Absolutely, that’s why I want to buy the Q3 43 one day I had the Q2 for a short while and yes, I absolutely appreciated the viewfinder. But not the 28mm so really. I also had the 28mm GR once. Again, lovely but not the one for me. Having both GRIIIs makes sense.
Still, the GR is so pocketable and you can really shoot differently with it because of its size. A GR cannot replace a Q. But a Q can also not fully replace a GR.
