Sadly, Sony doesn't seem to take GPS receivers seriously and always requires the phone. Canon and Nikon previously had standalone GPS receivers. Canon has discontinued the GP-E2. I don't even know if it'll be compatible with the R5 II. Will/should Canon release a GP-E3? I really wish the Canon influencers let Canon know we desperately need one!

I suspect the old GP-E2 won't work with the new hot shoe. Canon (and Sony) seem to have reliable smartphone apps now; I found the R5 stays connected very reliably, for days at a time.

I loved having the built-in GPS in my Z9, but the Z8 would lose the connection to the phone every time the camera or phone went to sleep. I ended up buying a Nikon GP-1 to use with the Z7 II and Z8, but it's a bit clunky as it requires a cord rather than connecting through the hot shoe like the Canon unit.

Didn't Canon release an adapter for the GP-E2?

1) It's noted in the R7 manual that the GP-E2 is compatible IF you have the AD-E1 adapter

2) I have R7 and use my GP-E2 with it in conjunction with the AD-E1 adapter. It works.

I doubt it. Canon has decided we don't need gps as that is only for iphone cameras. It is beneath their dignity to stick in their cameras. My problem with the iphone connecting to the R5 body is it only seems to be able to deal with one body at a time. I have two one with the 24-105 and the other 100-500. I switch back and forth. It is also a drain on the phone and camera battery. Now I'm back to creating a tracking long with a 10+year old sony device and matching up the data in downloader pro.

The GP-E2 works just fine with the new shoe in my R7 and R8.

I'd try Googling smaller dealers. They might still have one in stock. Also check eBay. Some dealers post there. Just take note of the return policy in case they send you a fake.

Regarding comments on the incompatibility of gps receiver with new hot shoes, the R6II user manual, pg 838, talks about connecting the GP-E2 to the camera, makes no mention of adapters

“ Attach GP-E2 to the camera's hot shoe and turn it on. For details, refer to the GP-E2 Instruction Manual.”

Then shows what to set camera menu items to.

Just took a look in the just released online manual and GP-E2 use is outlined so guessing that means a GP-E3 isn’t forthcoming soon at least.

Use instructions are identical to the R7 (AD-E1 adapter necessary):

Attach GP-E2* to the camera's hot shoe and turn it on. For details, refer to the GP-E2 Instruction Manual.
Requires a Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 (sold separately).

My understanding is that the AD-E1 is required to maintain the weather-resistance when using the GP-E2 with the R7 and other bodies with the new hot shoe. You can definitely use the GP-E2 with the R7 without the adapter, though you won't be able to lock the GP-E2. But you can push the locking lever tight enough that you won't have to worry about the GP-E2 falling off.

It locks without issues on my R7, but the R7 I rented last year required a significant of force that was just shy of "I think it will break". So there seems to be a lot of variance between the bodies. On my R8 it goes on and off even easier, but that's a sample size of one.

The GP-E2 works just fine in the R5m2, without an adapter, locks nicely in place (with lever). Was the 2nd thing I tried.

Yes, it works fine. Fortunately they did not remove the regular hotshoe from the R5 II. Still, it's ridiculous that the 5D IV had GPS 8 years ago and now we are supposed to have a cell phone near each camera body or use this discontinued product. I use the continuous tracking mode also since I often use 3+ bodies.

FWIW, a single phone connected to 3 bodies worked just find for me (M6II, R8 and R5 in that instance). They were all in range of course, which won't work if you need to spread out the bodies.
