I doubt it. Canon has decided we don't need gps as that is only for iphone cameras.

Canon reserves this feature for their pro bodies, as does Nikon. Sony no longer offers GPS at all.

The 5D IV had GPS and it worked well.

The 5d4 had it. Are we going backwards cutting features on new models. It would cot them about $5. Maybe it is time to go to Sony as they have lenses I wan instead of gee wiz lenses I don’t.

I was using the GP-E2 two weeks ago in Hawaii with my R5. Eventually, taking it on and off to go into my camera bag became too much of a hassle. I switched to using the GPS through the Canon app on my phone and it worked seamlessly. Going forward, I won't be taking the GP-E2; the app and phone method was more efficient.

6D had it! It's pennies, but Canon has always been very flaky with features. We might see GPS again in some Mk3 or Mk4 R5/6 cameras touted as a breakthrough feature.

Edit: Too bad we cannot adapt GP-E1 meaningfully. There are some around in the second hand shops, but nobody is using those compatible cameras anymore.

I think the theory is that people want everyone to know where they are all the time online and they haul the phone around. I rarely have service anywhere I'd want to photograph so I turn them off or use the airline mode.
Now I am using the GP-E2 to set the clocks and as a datalogger. It's much smaller than a smartphone and one AA battery lasts about 1.5 days. You can download the tracks with the Canon tool. The older program showed everything on the Google, but I recall they changed the business model so that would no longer work at the consumer level. Even if I did not ever use the GPS it's worthwhile to set the time exactly. I suspect that eventually Canon will do away with the traditional flash contacts, but it works with the R5 II.

Does GP-E2 work on R50? I can perhaps buy a second hand one, but if I'd have to setup a phone connection for R50 (which I intend to get), it doesn't have any sense to get GP-E2 that only works on R6/2 (which I already have)...

So I can answer myself, no, R50 doesn't work with GP-E2 even through the hotshoebox AD-E1 and the only solution is the phone. Well at least it locks well in that top hot shoe.

In R6/2 it works well, but it doesn't lock fully in the new hot shoe just like 580EX2 if the WR rubber is present on the hot shoe foot.

The GP-E2 was bought second hand and is ancient, still at FW level 1.0.6, latest is 2.0.2, guess I have some update to do...

For anyone using the R5 Mark II with the Canon connect app, does it reliably update the GPS location for you? I find it get the location when it first connects but never ever updates the location. I've used smartphone apps with Nikon and Leica with good success but Canon seems useless for this. I've done all the things like make sure the app has permissions to always get the location data (not just when the app is used) but it seems useless.

I try to use it on the R6ii if that counts... The app is terrible. Flakey, unreliable and not exactly accurate either. Most of the time I've taken the picture and moved on before the phone is able to connect - if it's able to connect. Very disappointing as was one of my hopes on a modern camera to have reliable GPS just work automagically - like any $20 watch or kids toy.

So did the 7dII, I think.

It absolutely did, and I made extensive use of it.

Exactly, which is why I'm frustrated that my R5II doesn't have GPS. I have to remember to start the GPS tracker app on my phone, like I did 10 years ago, and my memory isn't as sharp these days, so all too often I forget (just like I forget to take white card shots). Fortunately, Jeffrey Friedl's Geoencoding Support plugin for Lightroom still works as well as every.

Is it still possible to buy a brand-new GP-E2 in Japan? I don't know if it's believable or not, but I'm seeing new ones being sold by a seller from Japan. It's quite expensive, but new is new even though the product isn't fully compatible with RF cameras. If I can get one from a reputable store in Tokyo then I wouldn't mind picking one up later this year when I go back to Japan.

I want to set the R5 II to UTC. Is it faster and more reliable to use the Canon app or the GP-E2?

I can't emphasize this enough, but Canon really needs to release a GP-E3.

Neither. The time zone is set in the orange menu.

As for an E3 - it would be much better and simpler to simply add it to the camera, like the R3 or 5D4.

What do you mean by neither? I usually set my cameras to UTC and I want a reliable way to sync the time to keep it as accurate as possible.

Sure and I'm not against it, but please make a GP-E3 at a minimum!

Don't know if it's still available brand-new in Japan. Maybe they're selling some left over stock that can't be sold outside JP for some reason, like printing on the boxes, certification or whatever.

I remember over here in Europe I got my 2nd GP-E2 around 2017 or so and compared the first one I bought in 2012 a few tiny differences seemed to indicate to me that it might be from a different, maybe newer production run. So it doesn't seem impossible that Canon does another production run on the GP-E2.
However, I hope they won't but instead develop an entirely new GPS receiver based on newer GPS chipsets. Newer multi-band (GPS L1/L2 or L1/L5) and multi-constellation (including Galileo, BeiDou) GNSS are amazing both in terms of accuracy and reliability compared to older GPS chipsets. Ever since multi-band and multi-constellation GPS loggers became available (2021 or 2020, don't remember) I've been carrying one in addition to using the GP-E2 or the GPS in my old 5D Mark IV. In Canyons (natural or urban ones) as well as near or on large bodies of water multi-band and multi-constellation GPS makes a huge difference. I remember the first time I had one of those new GPS loggers with me in Walnut Canyon National Monument in Fall 2021 and was stunned when comparing the logs of my Canon GPS with that of this new GPS Logger.

All that said, with the lack of availability of Canon's GP-E2 if one needs/wants a hotshoe mounted GPS today the only alternative I'm aware of is the Solmeta GMAX-EOS2. It looks significantly larger than the GP-E2 in pictures and some comments I've seen confirm that.

It's a Columbus P-10 Pro. If anyone's interested I can share the GPX files from that hike at Walnut Canyon in 2021.

Neither the GPS gadget nor the Canon connect app will set your camera to UTC. Therefore, neither is faster. That's how the question was phrased. Sorry if that wasn't your intent.
