GPS receivers seriously and always requires the phone. Canon and Nikon previously had standalone GPS receivers. Canon has discontinued the GP-E2. I don't even know if it'll be compatible with the R5 II. Will/should Canon release a GP-E3? I really wish the Canon influencers let Canon know we desperately need one!
I suspect the old GP-E2 won't work with the new hot shoe. Canon (and Sony) seem to have reliable smartphone apps now; I found the R5 stays connected very reliably, for days at a time.
