AF. Noise.

I love detail, but I prefer an in-focus, lower noise 24MP photo over a blurry, complete noisy mess 45MP one. This camera is a one trick pony for me: owls in flight. For everything else so far, there's the R5 family.

Exactly, if you’re commonly shooting at high ISO’s in low light you know that bodies like the R1 are ultimately better than higher resolution bodies like the R5 Mark II. In good light it’s a no-brainer that the R5 Mark II will provide significantly more detailed files regardless of ISO, it all comes down to quality of light available.

I am very excited for this camera. My R3 has largely replaced my R5 for most things, except for when I want to maximize detail. The R1 looks to be even better. It should also offer even more detail than the R3 given the changes in AA filter that Canon has made.

Of course I can see the difference in detail. Perched shots in good light I always use the R5 (now mk2), but I like flight shots and those happen at ISO 25k or higher, f2.8, 1/500 or ideally faster, but sometimes slower. The R5m2 falls apart well before that, the R3 definitely towers above it in every regard, and I can't imagine the R1 being worse. I would love to have an R1 with 45MP and everything else being the same, but that's not what anyone's offering.

I set the R5m2 to max auto iso 12800, for low light it really does fall apart at 25600 and you can't set 16000 as a limit either. The R3 max auto-iso at 25600 is a reasonable file to work with and I'd expect the R1 to be slightly better for noise and shadows. Denoising changes the game of noise and pp.

After two months with the R5m2 side by side with R3 the 45mb has it's advantages but it's about focal length. On a football field with a 400mm the cropping power is an advantage, but a basketball court with a 70-200 less unlikely a need for the MP. The R5m2 and R1 both have AF advantages with acquiring subjects from a distant. The R5m2 AF is great but complex situations with lots of faces it's unpredictable and jittery, so maybe the R1 improves upon this but from a previous Jan YT video about his experience from birding, I commented to him with similar results he also saw with sports. I've found really good luck with setting case -2, +2 with football to be sticky, where the R3 would have been -2, +1, but always the fallback to single pt AF like the 1dx's. No beating the R1, R3 bodies for ergo, the R5m2 is just annoying with smaller buttons and idiotic front button placement.

The R1 will find it's audience but it's not to say one couldn't capture 95% of the same shots with a R6m2 realistically. If I'm thinking of spending $7k on the R1 and already have a R6m2, R3, or R5m2, money better spent is probably on a 100-300 imo.

Totally agree. The fact that the R6II is even in the discussion is amazing IMO, considering that prior to mirrorless it was really 1D series or nothing (for shooting sports). TBH, I'm very curious/interested in what the R6III will bring. Hopefully stacked (because the Z6III is kind of there already) along with pre-capture, a better EVF experience and deeper buffer (I can only hope!).

For sheer user experience bliss, the R1 will be the one to beat in Canon's lineup. As I suggested earlier, it's difficult to put a price on that aspect, but some will pay a premium for it, or prioritize it higher than other seemingly more logical features.

Seeing R3s come down in price, I want to snag one. I had the R6ii but rolling shutter ruined the experience for me. Love my R5, but yeah it really struggles in terrible lighting on the sports fields.

Can you speak on the AA filter change going into the R1?

According to Canon, the R1 uses a new low-pass filter with 16 point separation that is suppose to reduces moiré and false color while still capturing very detailed resolution. In contrast, I read somewhere that the R3 uses a 4 point low-pass filter. Regardless, the new sensor and low pass filter should potentially offer slightly better detail.

Very interesting, thank you. My R6ii made some of the worst moire I've ever experienced. My R5 does as well from time to time, but not nearly as bad.

Dunno whether or not you’re in the minority, but I am right with you. I had so wanted to be excited over the R1 and I’m sure that, in some minor of my particular circumstances, I’d even like the files better. But the 24mp removes the camera from any consideration for me. Will stick with the R5 II for now.

YMMV.

Fair enough, I tried the R1 at the local store when Canon was there giving it the push. I would not have one, but I am interested in detail more than anything. I want a record of the bird with as much info as I can extract. I am clearly in the minority here I guess.

The A1 II just might make the R1 look like a sad joke next week. I expect the A1 II to perform very closely or better to the R1 at double the MP. I think Canon really shit the bed with the R1 at 24MP but their saving grace is the R5II which should be good enough for most people.

Based on the current rumors it seems like Sony actually might have shit the bed, aside from getting the new body and AI focusing from the a9 III it seems like a very minor update. Obviously have to reserve judgment until it’s actually announced but if the rumors are true it doesn’t seem like it has much over the R5 Mark II.

The more that I’ve watched real world reviews of the R1 though the more the camera has impressed me. The image quality in low light looks incredible as does the dynamic range at high ISO’s. I just picked up an R5 Mark II but I’ll be trading in my R3 for the R1 and I think it’ll be my primary body like the R3 was.

Perhaps your post should be over in this thread not this R1 image thread.
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1870614/

Oh wait, I see you already trolled that one as well.
But I do agree with you. Sony's flagship A1 II might be able to compete with Canon's 2nd tier R5II.

Can you say Quad pixel AF? The A1 II AF won't be able to compete with the R1 let alone the DR and high ISO capabilities mentioned above.

But I digress. Let's keep this thread about the R1 images and specs.

Lighthound,

This is a gear forum where gear is discussed and compared. The title of this thread includes the word "Specifications". One of the R1's specifications is that it has a 24MP sensor. I'm sorry you are triggered by people who don't like this R1 specification, or any other specification of other Canon gear. Usually a troll is someone who doesn't use the gear being discussed, or maybe a hater from another brand. I happen to shoot Canon gear, and a lot of it. If you look around you'll see I give praise to a lot of the Canon gear I shoot with, in just the last few days that being the RF 70-200, EF 200-400, R5, R5II, R3, and 35 vcm. I'm not some Canon hater spouting off who doesn't use the gear being discussed, and I'm not someone discussing a body here who's not in the market for it. I'm in the market for every new high end body and lens that Canon makes. However, some of it has no value to me, and it is my opinion Canon missed the mark with the R1 being a flagship body at 24MP in 2024. You don't have to like it, but that is my opinion along with a ton of other Canon shooters who don't frequent this little forum. If the R1 had more resolution, I and many others would have been all over it as it would have been a very well rounded tool at its price point. But as it is, I don't shoot in the dark 90% of the time, and the current AF systems Canon has delivered since the R5/R6 are plenty good to capture just about anything nowadays. The R3/R5II/R6II were a step up and a bonus, but we are dealing with some serious diminishing returns in the AF department and R1 AF system are not necessary to most people unless one is trying to capture very specialized shots, or shooting in the dark. A lot of people are now very content with the current generation AF systems and are looking at other things like resolution, video, size, weight, lens options, etc. So even if the A1II doesn't completely match the AF performance of the R1, it will still be very close, and with double the resolution. So for me, that's why I say the R1 is a joke for a flagship, just as I could say the same about my R5II's when comparing to the R1. This is my opinion on a tool given its intended use at a price point in time (value), and it's not intended to attack or insult you or any R1 owners. It's perfectly fine if you don't like it, but I have to wonder why you get so triggered when someone doesn't like a feature or spec of a Canon product. I don't believe you've ever been in the market for top tier bodies, so why is it that you always get so defensive and make trolling claims to Canon users who actually buy and use the gear in this category? I don't get it, this it's a gear forum to discuss and compare gear, and these are just simple tools.

Quite simple as I already stated. This is a thread for R1 images and specs. People want to read this thread based on it's title.
If you want to talk up another brand while referring to the R1 as a "sad joke" then perhaps starting your own thread with that in it's title would be more appropriate rather than cluttering up a dedicated image thread with non related crap.
I and everyone else click on this thread to read about and view images from the R1. It's not that complicated.

I'm still waiting for one of the reviewers to do some testing and see if the QPAF is really making a difference. I thought Jan would touch on it but he didn't. Granted Jan's sequences he showed like the Peregrine in flight was impressive so the AF looks top notch. Just wondering if the QPAF has helped the notorious MILC issue of driving the lens back to a grossly OOF near subject from infinity??

I thought that was odd he didn't talk about it. I find this to be one of the most frustrating things with mirrorless.

I have the R5ii and I tried the R1 last week… I honestly saw no difference in the AF between them. I sold my R3 for the R5ii and it used to be about 85% keepers for birds/action, but the R5ii is about 97%.. I have so many shots are in critical sharp focus and the R1 seemed this way too when I took it out. I didn’t feel any real difference in acquisition and I used 3 of the same RF lenses for both. I haven’t tested either with the sports AF modes, but for birding, cars, and action, they really seem to be on the same level to me.

In addition the EVF has never been an issue and I’d say the R1’s is better but there was nothing about the R5ii that I felt was some significant downgrade.. it looks spectacular.

From my use of the R1, I didn't notice it having difficulty locking on subjects, but I also did not specifically test for this (didn't think of it). This will probably remain an area where DSLR AF has an advantage because of how its phase detect AF is designed with a much larger/wider base between the portions of the AF sensor that forms a focus point (for lack of a better term). On-sensor PDAF uses a much smaller base which apparently is a reason why acquisition from a grossly defocused state is challenging for mirrorless. I suspect that the R1's cross sensitivity will help somewhat, but that it won't be a cure-all. Where I feel it will make the biggest difference is in low contrast and/or low light situations where it can take advantage of horizontal line sensitivity lacking in most other mirrorless cameras, to supplement vertical line sensitivity.

But QPAF already exists for a few years with both version of the OM System OM-1. Has this been discussed at all over in the m43 forum? I think there are a handful of m43 shooters also here on the Canon board and maybe they could chime in until someone actually tests the R1?

Lighthound, do you not understand what specs are? Read what you typed above, "specs". This is not just a dedicated image only thread as you are failing to acknowledge. All specs are open for discussion in a gear forum, especially in a thread that specifically calls for an open discussion on the R1 specifications.

I'm sorry you don't like my opinions on a body that I would normally buy, but feel free to skip over them or maybe try to reply in an ordinary manner like Tony did above who kindly disagreed and spoke his opinion instead of calling out trolling. Feel free to start your own "R1 image only discussion" thread and see how that goes, but this one calls for an open discussion on R1 specifications, i.e. a 24mp sensor. Since you decided to carry on further, if anything is "crap" or thread cluttering, it's someone who constantly jumps in to defend gear they never buy, use, or own.

I said the same thing about the 1DXIII when it was released back when I was using the 1DXII. It was a joke for me at that point in time at the price point, but I eventually owned it when it got down to a value I thought was appropriate and as expected, it didn't give me much over the 1DXII. So now I have the same opinion on the R1. It's an R3 mark II @ 24MP and a current price of $6300 and I'm sorry you don't like that I think it's a joke right now. I wouldn't be calling it that if it had a 45-50MP+ sensor. I'm not the only one who feels this way about the R1, I hear it everywhere. So maybe you can just accept it and ignore it when you read opinions like mine, or you'll be the one causing more thread cluttering. Just because I don't like the R1 spec at this price point doesn't mean other people won't buy it and enjoy the camera. It's okay to have differing opinions on a tool.

Play around with the R1 for an hour last night. For glasses folks like me where the eye control was not usable on the R3, R5mii on the R1 thanks to larger evf area it finally works as it should.
