I think this is it for me with Canon, to wait this long and see a flagship that’s this underwhelming is beyond disappointing. Three years after the R3 and we basically get what I would have expected from an R3 Mark II? I’m sure the AF is probably stellar but the R3 already was outstanding, any shots I’ve missed with that camera were not because of the AF system. If they were sticking with the same resolution I would have expected a significant increase in performance over the R3 and on paper this just isn’t that.

Totally agreed. How is this any better than a Sony A9 III which can shoot 120 FPS Uncompressed RAW and has pre-capture? Plus, it's just a stacked sensor and not even global shutter!

This should be called R3 Mark II at best!

I've shot with every single major Mirrorless body at this point, and I still can't understand why Canon is still bothering with 24.2 MP "flagships." As a wildlife photographer, 24.2 MP doesn't cut it against my A1 or Z9. The R3 already has outstanding AF, at this point I want to see MP increases much more than better AF when the starting point is 24.

Built in upscaling a jpg image to 4x that only takes a few seconds and denoising, this will never beat software solutions.

I can already hear the nay sayers... "that seems like a solid R3 mkII".

OK, granted, the specs are not very impressive considering it will become available nearly 4 years after the a1, but I am sure it will perform very well for working pros.

I remember the negative comments when the Nikon D810 was released, but the many small changes ended up making all the difference in the world compared to the D800. And the R3 was already a very good camera to start with.

If they have managed to get eye focusing AF to work for more users that alone is probably worth the upgrade compared to the R3.

I wonder who "leaked" the way over the top rumored specs. They were all 100% wrong. Canon Rumors should IMHO just give up on this one. They have totally lost the little credibility they had left. Crazy as it may seem, I am thinking that some Sony FBs leaked on purpose crazy specs to generate dissapointement at launch.

Canon rumors did not get any rumor right lol. How is the R1 better than the R5 II? More expensive, 10 more fps, dynamic range better? Weird to release their first 45mp stacked sensor in the R5 II before the flagship.

Also disappointed. Marginally better than an R3 after all this time. No real breakthrough features it would seem. Lastly the obvious resolution but, Canon is touting 4 more megapixels the the 1DxIII. I'm not saying I won't end up with one but I just couldn't pull the pre-order trigger on this one.

The 5Ds had 50MP, while the R1 is the highest-resolution 1-series camera to date. Not sure what's weird about it?

The R5 II has a 45MP STACKED sensor. Canons first high res STACKED sensor.

Yeah, though the R5 II's stacked sensor is only a little faster than half the readout speed of the Z8, and still worse than the 3.5 year old Sony A1.

I'm sure it's a good camera. A very good camera, but the R1 is only very slightly faster than the Z8's readout, despite having half the resolution.

The only thing I see that makes any real difference is the pre-capture mode. That being said, I never use it on my Z9....

I think people are missing the BIG advancement the R1 has over all other FF's on the market. And that's the Cross-type AF it has which will finally put an end to the AF hunting that has plagued all FF mirrorless cameras.
This R1 seems to be a workhorse tool aimed towards the working sports pros. Which is what the 1 series has always been made for. The competition's flagships must try to compete with Canon's second tier 5 series. Which based on a price standpoint alone, they are failing badly at.

Yet the R3 has been described till date as having virtually perfect Af and I don’t remember people complaining about AF being worse in landscape vs portrait or the opposite.

I’d be surprised if it made a significant difference.

Actually the Z8/Z9 have a faster read out speed than the a1. They are close though.

Agree. I was happy to hear that the r5mark II readout is only a bit slower than the r3. They should of named it r3markii and kept the price point down under 5. I would love to hear cannon explain why there will never be a r3 mark ii lol.

I know. I'm saying the R5 II is still slower than the A1 despite the latter being 3.5 years old.
Readout shutter speeds: R5II: 1/160s, A1: 1/250s, Z8: 1/270s

It’s not made for wildlife shooters. That’s the R5 Mark II. This one is for sports and journalism shooters, who don’t need the resolution but need the best AF and fast connectivity.

We are on the page, sorry I misunderstood your comment it seems.

Yes, and those sensors are basically 3 years old.

Sony probably has an a1II ready to ship in a few months with a read out speed of 1/500s if not a global shutter.

I wonder at what point in time press agencies will just realize that the deal Canon is proposing them hurts the competitiveness of their photographers. Combining the crop potential of a Z9 with the value of super télé with TC expands significantly the options. Getty is paying significantly more for higher res files these days.
