If it started at 24mm it maybe a go for me. I could use it for event work mostly. That speed would be nice

Yeah, I realize it's a no go for you based on 28mm. You gotta shoot what works for you.

The 40 pulls ahead a bit in the corners when the lenses are stopped down some.

I think this is pretty impressive considering the kind of benchmark the 40mm Art is.
At first sight the 28-45mm felt a bit redundant next to the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8, but this result makes me think again.

I have similar thoughts, even briefly shot the Sigma against the Tamron at 35mm I think. The sigma is noticeably sharper in the outer frame at wide apertures... At smaller apertures, it was more about pixel-peeping .

The "problem":
I can shoot the 50 f/1.2 GM on my A7IV next to the EF 28mm f/1.4 Art on the Canon R5. The 28mm Art works very well on the A7IV via MC-11 as well, freeing the R5 up for the 40mm Art. When the 40mm Art is on the R5 the A7IV can also do the 85mm DN.
If I could find a satisfying 85mm for the Canon R5 this 28-45mm would make sense, as 28-45mm on the Sony next to 85mm on the Canon would be great. I have 105mm f/1.4 for my Canon, but 45-105mm is a too big gap sometimes.....

So all in all I simply fail to see any justification for this new Sigma short range zoom. And the short range zoom I really want is a 45-80 or 50-85mm f/1.8. The Tamron is nice, but from 80mm it's f/2.8 only.....

This is what I'm doing. At a recent family event, I had the Sigma 85mm on my A7rIII and the 28-45mm on my A1. It worked really well.

But now that you've mentioned the 105mm, I might want to give that a try...

Well, the 45-105mm gap won't be a problem always. And the 50 f/1.2 GM is said to be an 48mm actually, so from that perspective the gap would be almost the same....
Still, I'm not ready to sell the 50 f/1.2 GM (50mm is the focal length calling the most for a large aperture imo, and I like the AF and rendering a lot), and the same is true for the EOS R5. The GM on the A7IV and either the 105 or 28mm Art on the R5 is the approach I will stick to. It works very well, and it's not too many lens changes really. But 28-45mm + 85mm DN sounds certainly very attractive. No lens changes, less weight overall.....

There's so much great gear these days. I just wish I could mount the FE glass to RF cameras and vice versa. 28mm RF pancake + A7CII.... or 50mm f/1.2 GM or Tamron 35-150mm on the R5....

Not a perfect world...

Yeah, I have similar thoughts regarding 28-45 vs fast primes. I just know that if I had the zoom, the primes would be sentenced to shelf for the most of their remaining lifes ...

How is the focus speed on the sigma? I assume it got the new linear motors. Also how is the accuracy of the focus?

I shoot mostly landscape, but it seems very snappy. I'm guessing MAubrey might be able to jump in with his thoughts. I suspect he has probably put it through its paces more.

Yeah, it's fast. Definitely linear motors.

I haven't shot anything moving faster than a running toddler just yet, but the AF has been sticky and accurate.

So I just found this thread. I never intended to get this lens... But I bought it yesterday...

Love my 35 GM. Bought the 24-50 a few months back because I wanted lighter and smaller than the 24-70... Now I have a monster... Got it just to see if it will work for events (Meaning, will I deal with the weight etc....) Here's some shoddy test images since I needed to make sure the lens works before tomorrows event!! Random stuff shot wide open... I didn't get to track any moving subjects though... There's way more than needed...

AF is very accurate for video too. Trip got delayed cause covid but here's a few jpgs to show bokeh (oh, I glued on a variable ND + CPL on it for these, but didn't really notice any degradation):

So after shooting with this as my main "wide" lens for a wedding I do like it. I think if you're a 35mm shooter the 28 & 45 ends make it pretty versatile. I did pair it with the Sony 85/1.8 & 70-200 GMII which was great.

I didn't use it with a flash except for the cocktail hour and some reception. The total weight was noticeable with flash. Once dancing started I switched to the 24-50G and was instantly relieved lol. The only issue is the backwards zoom ring of the Sigma vs Sony. It will throw you off after using it all day. I wish 3rd party companies would follow the brand they're manufacturing for. I'd happily pay extra for it...

Lloyd Chambers has been talking about the lens and how apochromatic it is. Decided to put it through a workout.

All shot with my a7R V, processed in Lightroom Classic.

Think of it as part photography, and part workout.

I was thinking of finally breaking down and getting a 70-200 f/2.8. With Sony I could use my 1.4x TC, but my UWA is also a Sigma (14-24), so I'd have to get used to the zoom turning the other way. I could go with the Sigma, but it's heavier, doesn't take the 1.4x TC, and is probably a tad behind the Sony. Oh, and I don't think it focuses quite a closely as the Sony.
