From what I can tell, the people freaking out seem to be doing so over the distortion more than anything else. I think for some it is hard to reconcile that in an L-series "flagship" prime, regardless of how well edge sharpness is retained after corrections.
However, several L-series zooms are already designed this way, and have been accepted without too much controversy. Logically then, I'm not sure why prime lenses should be off limits for this kind of design approach.
In any case, I'm copacetic with this as long as acuity remains high. I value the more compact design while retaining f/1.4 speed....Show more →
I dont see any difference in distortion over my previous 35mm lenses (Sony 35mm GM, RF 35mm 1.8, Tamron EF 35mm 1.4, Canon EF 35mm 1.4 V1). Took around 250 photos of kids and the distortion looks no different that previous Sony 35mm 1.4 lens I had. I dont correct photos at all either. Just apply a preset and edit that way for simplicity.
