From what I can tell, the people freaking out seem to be doing so over the distortion more than anything else. I think for some it is hard to reconcile that in an L-series "flagship" prime, regardless of how well edge sharpness is retained after corrections.

However, several L-series zooms are already designed this way, and have been accepted without too much controversy. Logically then, I'm not sure why prime lenses should be off limits for this kind of design approach.

In any case, I'm copacetic with this as long as acuity remains high. I value the more compact design while retaining f/1.4 speed.

I’m not really sure what the concern is around the floating element in the lens.

Many other lenses (including sony) have a similar design and as far as I’m aware haven’t had any reliability issues.

But yes this review was mostly positive.

I dont see any difference in distortion over my previous 35mm lenses (Sony 35mm GM, RF 35mm 1.8, Tamron EF 35mm 1.4, Canon EF 35mm 1.4 V1). Took around 250 photos of kids and the distortion looks no different that previous Sony 35mm 1.4 lens I had. I dont correct photos at all either. Just apply a preset and edit that way for simplicity.

This is reassuring to me. I feel like if it’s approximately as good as the 35 GM I’m good to go 😂

Sweet! Any chance you got some mid to longer distance shots?

Have you specifically turned off distortion correction in Lightroom? By default, it’s automatically correcting the lenses unless you specifically turn it off for each image (or make sure to save that specific setting in your preset).

Have never adjusted that setting. I’m using Lightroom classic currently. If it’s correcting it that’s fine with me. Looks normal on my end. I’m not a pro photographer. My wife was unable to notice the difference between Sony and Canon 35mm 1.4.

Check under your Lens Corrections drop down and see if this box is checked. It probably is but let us know.

Chromic aberration is checked. Profile corrections is not. Pretty sure I turned profile correction off a long time ago cause it messed with my preset colors and exposure.

Dont shot a lot of longer distance shots. Couple shots from today arent as close as other ones I had. Sorry for the Google photo compression. Not paying for upload status as I dont have anything to sell.

Lens corrections are forced on in the camera, so you will never see this in a JPEG or in the viewfinder. Lens corrections are also automatically applied in DPP, DXO, ACR and Lightroom.

If you have examined your files with corrections turned off, I would be fairly surprised if you haven't noticed this. Uncorrected distortion in this lens is very strong.
