outside of both the V2 and new version being soft wide open, they don't look similar to me. Out of focus looks different, bokeh totally different shape. Once again, the new version looks amazing for portraits. I am going to order from Leica Miami (no tax and I get points) and will compare against my original V2
That's great! If possible, please share some side-by-side comparisons.

My daughter doesn’t know it yet, but she will be my model and I plan on shooting 50 Lux V2, Thypoch 50, 50 APO and the new classic Lux. I think all three of them are great portrait lenses in the right situation. Hopefully it ships before next weekend

When I approach my daughters with a big smile and a new shiny lens on my camera, they already know the drill!
Got mine yesterday. Biggest concern was the weight. Doesn't feel that bad at all. I expected as much glow and imperfections wide open as the Steel Rim re-issue (I love that lens), this isn't the case at all. Keep in mind I've never used a 50mm pre-aspherical Summilux to compare. This lens strikes a nice balance between classic and modern. The focus is throw is long. make no mistake, but is quite smooth - I find it very helpful to make micro adjustments to focus. Last but not least, I expected the focus shift to be as bad as the Steel rim re-issue. Not the case. As long as your focus accuracy is good (and your rangefinder in good standing), stopping down at all apertures includes your intended target nicely in focus (obviously the plane will extend backwards). I find the focus shift peaks at f/2.8 (still usable) then improves f/4 onward. Sharpness-wise, this is a modern lens f/2 onwards. 0.7 MFD lovers, rejoice. Nice portraits, nice bokeh, great lens all around.
I still think this will be a great hit like the SR re-issue was.

Great! This is good news. How do you find the overall Quality build of the lens? This was an inital concern for me after witnessing the issuees that the 35mm SRR had on its inital batches. I picked up my SRR at the start of the year and has been my fav lens so far. This 50mm is tugging at me and hearing that its optical performace strikes a greater balance between classic and modern souds really good for a 50mm addition to my collection.
P.S. Sample images of the lens mounted on the camera and general captured images are now mandatory :-)
Congratulations!
I'm glad others are enjoying the lens and its output, and I want it to be a successful release for Leica, but I've already decided it's not for me. Leica modernized it too much for my taste. If I wanted smooth rendering and high resolution, I'd stick with the excellent 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH. And if I'm looking for the look and rendering of a lens from the past, I can always buy a used version..
I've also seen side-by-side comparisons with the 50mm f/1.4 Summilux Pre-ASPH (v3), and the rendering is noticeably different. It doesn't follow Leica's usual approach of staying faithful to older designs, like they did with the Steel Rim, Summaron, and Thambar.
Having said that, I can see how many will appreciate the optical transitional aspect of this lens. Perhaps the ASPH. is too high-performing and modern for some, and the pre-ASPH versions don't offer the performance they're looking for.

Fred, I tend to agree with you and that was why I turned down the day 1 offer. My V3 is terrific for me. Plus how many 50's do I need since I believe I already have around 12 50's.

The build quality is solid. While the Steel rim (2023) initial batch was plagued with things like loose aperture ring, stiff focus ring, my copy has none of those. I think if you enjoy the Steel-rim now, the 50 will complement it nicely if you're OK with the classic rendering wide open. I do not have a picture at the moment of the lens mounted, will post maybe later.
I also can confirm normal B+W E46 filters fit with the hood on, and with the hood reversed; though the hood is a bit easy to rotate as there is no notch like on the 35mm Summilux ASPH v1, so I will try a small length of electrical tape inside the hood rim to add slightly more friction.
Here is size compared to the v3. I plan to make some bokeh comparisons between the two.

Agree the construction and QC are great.

Silver lustre, very handsome.
Though I have to say your Black M-A and 50 Lux v3 look great together too.

Thank you for that feedback! I'm waiting for the official review and pictures to be loaded up 😄
I do have to say that I am torn between this one and the 50mm v3.

I find the Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux pre-ASPH v3 to be a lovely lens. Weighing just 273 grams (including the retractable hood), it is remarkably light and delivers a more classic rendering compared to the modern ASPH version. I also appreciate the shorter 100-degree focus throw, which allows for quicker focusing compared to the previous models.
Here are a few samples captured with my M-D:

Jealous seeing these lenses out in the wild, wonder when I’ll get the call.
The weight difference compared to my V2 is huge, I think that is my main concern. I have seen videos mentioning the extremely long focus throw, especially compared to the V2/V3, I welcome this as I use the V2 for portraits and don’t mind the extra time in nailing down focus. If I had intentions of a walk-around 50 lens, that would bother me

Fred, thank you for sharing these images, all very lovely.
First YouTube video I'm catching of this lens out in the wild.
At timestamp 5:57 there is a side by side shot of the reissue vs the ASPH II, I can barely see any difference between the two. 🤔

Thanks for the link. I am subscribed to his channel, but, that is no guarantee it would soon appear in my yew-tube feed. Already having the first ASPH version of the Summilux-M 50, it will probably be difficult to “justify” this Re-Edition. I may have to do a side-by-side test shoot, to help with the decision, not only to be able to compare images, on a large iPad, on-site, but to physically handle the lens. So much of Leica M shooting, for me, is about the haptics/ergonomics of the lens. My being left-handed may be part of this.
