p.3 #1 · The next Fuji APSC camera is X-T50

And the madness continues: one of the dials (I guess the left one) is a dedicated film simulation dial. It will have 12 positions: 8 fixed film simulations, 3 positions can be assigned to whatever film simulation you want, 1 “C” position to basically disable the dial, and the camera will activate whatever film simulation is set in your custom settings (Source: fujirumors).

So the film simulation dial is what Fuji can use to justify the price hike? I wonder who this camera is for...Looking at my OP where I thought it was going to be "a standard refresh," I was wrong. This is a quite significant change of identity, from a compact serious camera to a toy camera that aims primarily to please the tiktok crowd.

So 6 custom sims supported in the menu and 3 supported by the dial, brilliant stuff Fuji!

According to Fuji Rumors the price of the X-T50 will be $1600. The price of an X-T5 is $1700. What are they thinking? I think this will be a big flop.

I think Fujifilm knows their customer very well, if you do not like it, there is always X-T5. I am pretty sure a lot customer who cannot get x100vi will get this one.

I'm struggling to believe Fuji would go this way. A dial for custom modes would make more sense. The fun is in the film recipes, of which the film sims are just one of the ingredients.

If Nikon can release a ZFCII with IBIS and competent AF I honestly think that and a couple of Viltrox primes would eat the X-T50 for lunch.

I think it's exciting that Fuji tries to push the boundaries. Perhaps not great news for those shooting raw and never use film simulations but cool for those who use Fujifilm simulations, especially when combined with 10-bit HEIF files. There is space for 3 custom sims which probably can be easily rotated if needed. I think is a novel idea that emphasizes the Fuji differential compared to other cameras, their film simulations. It also entices those who do not use these simulations to try them out.
As you wrote, there are shooters that will hate this move but Fuji produces other camera models for them.

In fact, this is no longer true. Many serious hobbyists and pros were attracted by Fuji's compact and retro design. In the past, if you wanted serious features but did not want the size, weight, and price of the X-Tx, you could get the X-Tx0 as a mini X-Tx. But the X-T50 is no longer a mini X-T5 with its inflated price and downgrade in ergonomics. If you want a serious 40MP camera from Fuji, your only choices are the X-T5 or X-H2, which are larger, heavier, and more expensive. We used to have the X-E line, but that is gone. The X-S line is dedicated to old sensor, PSAM video-centric cameras. So really there isn't a good choice for compact retro high MP Fuji camera any more.

The X-T50 is replacing a core function dial (drive mode) with an amateur dial. This is a step back in ergonomics on a compact body with extremely limited real estate, where the external controls should be devoted to core functions. There are already other core functions that don't have their own dials on the X-Tx0, such as ISO control. It's a waste to have a hardcoded dial dedicated to film sim. If you really want to assign film sim to a dial, the implementation on the X-S10 is much better, with an unmarked dial that can also be customized to perform other functions by the user.

Film Sims are selling more cameras than a drive mode dial- That’s a fact at this point.

Fuji is selling to its strengths- not building cameras like everything else on the market. Good on them

This is a joke. Where is your data?! So far no Fuji camera has a film sim dial. Film Sims and film sim dial are completely different things. Every Fuji camera has Film Sims, but that has not required a dedicated dial to sell well.

Did I say film sim dials?

Film sims are a driving factor in why people like Fuji Film. If you don’t agree on that point there is really no reason to continue the conversation.

No one is going to buy that camera for a drive mode dial. People might for a Film Sim dial. It’s one of the reasons I like Fuji- I enjoy using Film Sims instead of shooting raw like I do exclusively on my Sony and Leica cameras.

The post you are responding to is entirely about film sim dials. It's NOT about film sim. If you are not talking about film sim dials, you should go to another thread.

THE FILM SIM DIAL IS AN AMZING IDEA- PEOPLE BUY FUJI CAMERAS BECAUSE OF FILM SIMS-

Putting it as a dial with 3 custom slots is an awesome idea and kudos to Fuji for doing something different. It will sell more cameras for Fuji than the drive mode dial would.

Unfortunately, "THE FILM SIM DIAL IS AN AMZING IDEA" doesn't follow "PEOPLE BUY FUJI CAMERAS BECAUSE OF FILM SIMS." This is a basic logic error. Forget for a moment "PEOPLE BUY FUJI CAMERAS BECAUSE OF FILM SIMS" is also a false statement.

I'm not sure if others feel the same, but for me, the film simulations are what drew me to Fuji. There are probably many like me, but it's hard to say for sure. I like the new dial, but I'm not happy about the higher price. Still, I get that Fuji has to adjust prices with changes in costs. It's perfectly fine to express your dissatisfaction, especially if you feel this new camera won't benefit your photography -- If many Fuji shooters share your perspective, it's probable that Fuji will reconsider this concept when designing future cameras.

Beats me why people want to wallow in the problems of the past. I spent decades regretting the idiosyncratic colour rendering of films. Good riddance to all that, forget the limitations, take the raw out of camera and create your own look to your photos, you have control in post processing we could only dream of in film days

It’s one of the main reasons I love using Fuji- If Fuji X weekly and all the other recipe sites are of any indication, it’s massively popular.

I think the film sim dial actually fixes a pretty large annoyance i have with film sims- I would want to create a recipe and choose it but only wanted the IQ settings changed for the film sim. I didn’t want anything else edited.

So this dial will hopefully take care of that. Just allow for custom modifications of the Film sims and parameters that go with it. Bonus points if you can edit the settings for the specific film sim presaved and make edits as well.

Every camera can shoot RAW, I love Fuji is putting their color science to work in camera- It’s a fun change when I pick up my Fuji. I wish they thought about this dial for the X100 series.

The problem I see with the film sim dial is that you will need to remember what recipe you have in each of the C slots and then the other slots change the film sims but not necessarily the "recipe" so the dial is a bit of a hybrid between a C dial and a film sim dial, which could be confusing. For those of us that use different recipes, I'd rather have seven (or more) C slots on the dial.

I'm not sure how many users change the film sims without changing the other recipe parameters, such as highlights, shadows, custom white balance and chrome FX, but just changing the film sim but not recipe is not that useful for my needs.

I'm also not sure that the current method of changing sims is that slow - either via the Q menu where you can actually give a custom name to the recipe, or by setting one of the customisable buttons and dial.

You nailed it. Some folks confused about (and equated) Fuji's color science, film sim, film sim recipe, and film sim dial. The film sim dial is mainly an advertising device showing newcomers "come, we have film sims." It remains to be seen how successful it is as an advertisement for newcomers, but in real use it's not practical even for users who are attracted by the easiness to configure colors on Fuji cameras. For that you use the "film sim recipes" rather than constantly shifting among the stock film sims, and the film sim dial limits the customized choices to 3. There are better ways to implement it, and without hurting core functions such as changing drive settings. Granted one can say the X-T50 is for novices and they don't use recipes but only sims, but the price tag is not entry level. The dial would have been suitable for an X-A or X-T200.

After using and observing Fuji for a decade, I'm not sure they do extensive useful marketing research; otherwise one cannot explain some of their idiosyncratic decisions. It appears they rely on consultation meetings with a bunch of X Photographers. Probably this film sim dial is another smart idea from one or two of those folks, maybe the same ones who proposed to have a film sim LCD on the back of the X-Pro3.
