So how is it they virtually ignored any updates to their focus system (which it needs) as well as that super simple Z8 feature of cycling the subject detection with one button? How in the heck did they miss this MOST important of issues.

They didn't. What are you talking about?

If you are talking about AF selection with a single button that was added in FW 5, where is the single button "subject" detection on the Z8, maybe I missed that? Focus system is awesome so not sure what you are talking about there.

The Z8 doesn't have single button subject detection cycling. It has AF Area Mode cycling, which the Z9 also now has. People are hoping that subject detection cycling will come to both cameras.

It's there just like RoamingScott and George have alluded to: page #37
i find the focus much improved over time and i do use different AF areas to work the image (my favorites). i don't have the same POV on that subject. for my usage i think i have a handle on it.
i do believe he is referring to cycling through people plane bird and whatever recognition. the thing i usually keep on auto fot where it is on the foever list.
I had put the Z9 down for the last 2 weeks as I've been playing with the X100VI exclusively, and forgot just how fast the Z9 is in terms of UI/AF/responsiveness
The thicker AF box is much appreciated, as is the half press to exit MF...I'd reached out to Ricci about the latter a while ago, so I'll just go ahead and take credit for that one
400% magnification is downright silly, especially with all of the latency that comes with Nikon's mag view. Hard to even see what's in focus through the sensor noise at that point since it looks like snow at 400%.

Oh, we're back to THIS version of you. Neat.
Give me a break. I'll stand on the idea it was slack of Nikon NOT to include the 2 things I'd mentioned considering they could have left off 90% of the stuff they added and added what I'd mentioned and it would have made it a much more formidable camera. Besides the update did NOT add the cycle ability for Subject Recognition. It added cycle for focus area which I'd already been using on my F2 button. to access.

He is referring to a non-existant feature on the Z8, complaining that the Z9 did not get it. Big brain stuff.
Sorry but indeed the Z8 DOES do a cycle on ONE button to access the entire group of Subject Recognition. Steve Perry goes through it and praises it's addition (which I would agree makes life that much easier)

That could be programmed through first option in MyMenu, not directly as AF area cycling.
I think, you didn't pay attention to the details.
I wish Nikon came up with assigning one button for cycling through subject detection on z8, like AF area, but unfortunately, they didn't.

Do y'all mean subject detection MODE cycling? As in, assigning a button to cycle between bird detect and human face detect? Because surely the Z8 & Z9 has a way for you to choose which of multiple detected objects in a given scene is the subject, right? Even my GFX has that!
