Yeah if they implement it better fine. If they also make it backwards compatible with currently made stuff also fine. Because If I have to rebuy like $1400 in Profoto triggers and flashes I'm going to be pissed. bernardl wrote:
Agree that Sony's design is terrible. It doesn't mean that all designs have to be that poor.

I share your views yes. There are things that we are going to need new hardware for. I believe that Nikon has done an amazing job maximizing the potential of the Z9 hardware.
To me what a Z9II could bring to the table in terms of improved hardware could be:
- a faster Expeed 7b or Expeed 8 with lower power consumption (smaller process node)
- support for CFE 4.0 for faster data throughput enabling raw video back up
- more on-board buffer memory
- an updated EVF with 240 fps refresh rate and even a bit brighter (no need for more resolution)
- a re-designed memory slot card for easier one hand operation
- a 10 Gbit network port
- a reinforced mount attachment (no need but pure communication since it was used by trolls to generate FUD)
- a digital hot shoe that would enable a new set of digital accessories, they are trailing Sony and Canon on this
That would ensure:
- pre-capture raw
- 30+ fps raw
- an infinite buffer in all shooting modes (including back up in lossless raw at 30 fps)
- video raw back up to 2 cards
- live raw downsizing in all modes to enable 20mp raw files
- even faster and more accurate AF
- an updated EVF with 240 fps refresh rate and even a bit brighter (no need for more resolution)
The EVF is definitely one area I'd like to see improved. 240 fps refresh rate, brighter and maybe a bump to 5.76M resolution. The lag when zooming the EVF to 100% is noticeable. Even faster and more accurate AF would also be welcome.
Faster flash sync (1/320, 1/400 or 1/500) would be nice as well.
I have not done the update, but I didn't see the ONE Z8 firmware update feature added to the Z9 5.00... In Z8 firmware 2.0 you can not toggle through multiple AF detection modes with a press of a single button. This reduces the need to use the "Recall Settings" mode to simple change from, let's say 3D AF to Single Spot AF. This one feature, quickly toggling through AF detection modes, makes the Z8 more useful in wildlife and sport photography... This should be an easy addition to the custom control menu...
Can anyone who has updated the firmware and knows the feature I'm describing confirm for me?

I can't for the life of me understand why they'd port only 1 of the 2 new picture controls over. Deep Mono seems far more useful than Rich Portrait.
I had to laugh as I set my focus box to thickness 2, thinking about how Sony refused to change the AF box from white to red via firmware on the A7R3 and made you buy the A7R4 for that.

Re: the hot shoe - You’re mixing up firmware upgrades with physical changes to the camera. A new hot shoe design would require a new model. The same with higher flash sync speed. It would require new hardware. Probably the 240Hz refresh on the EVF would require a new display as well.
I know the difference since we were discussing what would come in a hypothetical Z9II. story_teller wrote:

I'm curious, how many people are actually using the skin softening and auto capture? In particular, anyone seriously shooting portraits is going to be doing so in RAW.

i personally don't. general rule for me is that if a feature/enhancement not available in RAW, i'm not interested.

I imagine a lot of people produce portaits as a business especially a studio environment can give the files and prints at the end of the session to the customers. These features allow more options and minimize the need for post-processing which can improve efficiency and reduce costs. The complete control over lighting means there may not be any need for tweaks in post.
These options are available in raw when using NX studio for raw conversion, I believe.

I applaud the advances Nikon is providing for my Z9. But they've forget 2 important ones that I'm surprised they didn't add. The Cycle for subject detection the Z8 has, and improving the Subject Detection sensitivity and accuracy especially for animals. When I've tried to shoot horses and my house bunnies it simply will NOT nail the eyes. My Sony A6700 with it's AI chip nails it immediately in all kinds of light. Oh well......maybe next time.
IDK why some people are complaining about this update and saying it should not be a v5 upgrade.
Version numbers are arbitrary and it's a free upgrade. If the list of improvements don't entice you then don't upgrade. But for some users the improvements will be used and greatly appreciated. Personally I respect Nikons continual improvement of the Z9 and hope this trend continues.

I agree and the fact that the Z9 is over 2 years old and they do this much of a comprehensive FW update is awesome!
So how is it they virtually ignored any updates to their focus system (which it needs) as well as that super simple Z8 feature of cycling the subject detection with one button? How in the heck did they miss this MOST important of issues.
