I received the 500 this afternoon. As the weather has not been great, not had the time to go out as such but its so small (about 1 1/2 x the size of the iPhone 14 Plus) lightweight and easy to use. I put the lens on my A1/A9III and the AF is quick. Hopefully I will have the time to use it over the weekend and compare image quality with the 300F2.8/400F2.8 and 200-600. A lens cover is already available for this lens. For me it all comes down to weight. I fly a lot with my kit and the weight with the 300 and all other kit bar the 400 is 7.2 kilo. If I swap the 300 for the 400 it's around 9 kilo.
Rik I understand and feel pained by it. X-ray below 2 years ago. It's only gotten worse/totally

Shame to have the ultimate and not be able to wield it.
The Sig500/5.6 will buy me some time. mFT is in my future.

Actually no, I have decided against the 300GM with 2xTC, because common sense dictates that, and I am not convinced by the video "reviews" that I should not follow common sense. I will not re-purchase the 200-600G either.
This Sigma 500 is an easy choice for me within Sony, as I would never put a TC on a f5.6 lens, the A1 has plenty resolution, and I have no urgent need for more fps than 15. They seem to have put an effort in making this lens outshine the multitude of consumer lenses that get to 500/600. and I am not put off by its less than gracious looks, I would dress it in a nice rolanpro cover.
My mouse is hovering over the pre-order button, the only other option that lures in the background, is a Z8 with 600PF, but that is a very hefty investment in going double system....Show more →
What do you mean by "common sense"? Is it the oft-repeated stuff about the 2x TC having a devastating impact on image quality? Because that may be true (or partly true) on a a zoom lens (70-200 or 200-600, it's not true on Sony's big white prime lenses - they appear to be specifically designed to be welcoming to teleconverters. It makes sense that it's easier to make a prime work well with teleconverters than a zoom.
Adding the 2x to the 300 GM has little or no impact on image quality in good light.
I have experimented with both the 1.4x and the 2x on the 200-600 at 600mm. The 2x makes it into an f/13 1200mm, and while it works (you still get AF on the A1), the results are so-so...

I heard on Jared Polin's channel that there'd be delays because of unexpected demand.
Have we ever heard of an interesting lens where the maker didn't talk of unexpected demand? Makes me wonder if their "expected demand" is 2. Or maybe that what they tell the PR department because they think it will cause people to hurry to order one?

Fedex don't deliver on Sat/Sun. I just hate the way they release stuff on Friday. Why can they do Thurs so next day delivery would be Friday.
FedEx does deliver on Saturday. But of course it would have to be marked for Saturday delivery. Which back when I worked for them, now retired, was getting stupid expensive. If the tracking shows it's at the station near you, could you drive and see if you could pick it up?
And FedEx is changing this June. 99% of all FedEx Air will be ground. SMDH...

That excuse from manufacturers is getting very, very old now. What do they do? Make a couple of dozen not expecting it to sell?! Same happened with the A1, A7IV, etc, etc!
Not in the uk i got mine picked it up friday ,arrived thursday so the expected delivery was earlier than first thought it supposedly meant to arrive end of march .

So how do you like it? Is it what you expected? Thanks.
It did the opposite for me. The idea that my order might get delayed indefinitely because of supply problems was one of the three main reasons I decided to go with the Sony 300 2.8 instead.
