Actually no, I have decided against the 300GM with 2xTC, because common sense dictates that, and I am not convinced by the video "reviews" that I should not follow common sense. I will not re-purchase the 200-600G either.
This Sigma 500 is an easy choice for me within Sony, as I would never put a TC on a f5.6 lens, the A1 has plenty resolution, and I have no urgent need for more fps than 15. They seem to have put an effort in making this lens outshine the multitude of consumer lenses that get to 500/600. and I am not put off by its less than gracious looks, I would dress it in a nice rolanpro cover.
My mouse is hovering over the pre-order button, the only other option that lures in the background, is a Z8 with 600PF, but that is a very hefty investment in going double system.
I really like the size and weight. But the lack of TC support (particularly a 1.4x) and being capped to 15fps are pretty big strikes against it.
I hoping to see some head to head comparisons between the Sony 200-600mm at 600mm and this lens cropped in to 600mm equivalent.
If the sigma comes out significantly ahead even after cropping. Might give me the nudge to pull the trigger
Regardless, I hope this lens is a big success for Sigma. Not only would it be nice for Sigma, but maybe it would force Sony to take notice and come out with their own version. 600mm f5.6 in the $4000-5000 range sounds good to me 😊
cropping on a high resolution body like the A1 gives me better results with slower lenses. I never put the 1.4TC on the 200-600 either when I had that lens. I only use it for the 600GM.
Sony needs to lift that 15FPS limit! Owning an A1 this is a deal breaker. I really want to know how the 300GM 2.8 + 2xTC compares to the 200-600 from both an images quality and AF standpoint

I would argue that the problem with a TC on the 200-600 is that it's a consumer zoom, not the speed. The 500 f5.6 is a prime and should accept TCs very nicely.

The thing for me is, that with a 1.4TC, a f5.6 lens turns into a f8 lens. I don't really like the look of f8 images, and the high iso needed with such a small aperture also adds to that.
To each his own, but I expect to shoot the Sigma 500mm wide open at f5.6 99% of the time.
Which doesn't mean that it is not utterly stupid on Sony's part to cripple TC use on Sigma lenses.
