The thing for me is, that with a 1.4TC, a f5.6 lens turns into a f8 lens.

It's not ideal, but I'd rather have the option to get more reach on something than crop it down to the point where I can't print it out.

This lens looks promising. I'm keeping it on my short list along with 300GM and Z8/600PF.
Like Chris I would never use a TC on an f/5.6 lens. I don't even like them on Sony's native $12K prime lenses which start at 2.8 and 4 so no way I'll be happy with one on a Sigma 5.6 lens.

The 15FPS limit gives me some pause. I can live with 15FPS but I just feel it would always be in the back of my mind as a compromise as I do shoot my A1 at 30FPS more than 50% of the time.

Huh. I can't understand that mindset.

+1 .. I sold my 1.4x TC even though I still had my 600 GM at the time.
I find it better (in terms of details) to enhance in Adobe Camera Raw when needed and crop.

I hear that but when I had the D500+500PF I never used a TC on it.
With the A1/A7Riv,a/A7Rv just push the button you've programmed for cropper mode, wallah instant TC

Maybe that works for taking bird photos. Not the kind of photos I like taking.

I can't always zoom with my feet.

Fortunately, not every photo of an animal needs to be a tight portrait.

And I'd rather make that decision myself rather than letting the limitations of my equipment make it for me.

Would you mind sharing the reasons for such a strong preference?
Image quality, auto focus, focal length, versatility with tc, 30fps?

Still on the fence with this lens.

I really like the size and weight. But the lack of TC support (particularly a 1.4x) and being capped to 15fps are pretty big strikes against it.

I hoping to see some head to head comparisons between the Sony 200-600mm at 600mm and this lens cropped in to 600mm equivalent.

If the sigma comes out significantly ahead even after cropping. Might give me the nudge to pull the trigger

Regardless, I hope this lens is a big success for Sigma. Not only would it be nice for Sigma, but maybe it would force

Same here. The Sigma 500mm cropped would have to be better than the 200-600 at 600mm (on a high resolution body) for me to consider it. The lack of TC 1.4x and AF restriction makes it a difficult choice at $3k - and 3rd party lenses don't hold their value as well as the Sony ones.

That might make it a good idea to wait and pick up one used.

Already available for preorder in Australia for less than Nikon 500 PF.
Close to exactly double the price of 200-600 but that's often discounted.
Significantly cheaper than Nikon 600 PF

Dustin Abbott posted, as usual, a nice review:
https://dustinabbott.net/2024/02/sigma-500mm-f5-6-dn-os-sport-review/

including size and IQ comparison to 200-600.

I don't think I'd pay the extra $$$ for the IQ difference in the center but the rest of the frame is more convincing. And the size / weight difference is huge (~8cm in length / 750g)...

The review by Dustin Abbott is very convincing.
I see a big difference with the 200-600G, assuming he has a good sample.

The Sigma has true prime image quality, comparable with the Nikon 500PF regarding detail and crispness.
Color rendering and microcontrast and such remain to be seen, but it is in another class optically compared to the 200-600G.

I know he's not often a crowd favorite but Jared has a video up about the Sig 500.

I loved shooting the Nikon 500PF, with this lens being smaller and lighter, it's tempting for sure. I'd have to shoot one to compare it to the 200-600. It's nice to see Sigma putting out new lenses.

Actually no, I have decided against the 300GM with 2xTC, because common sense dictates that, and I am not convinced by the video "reviews" that I should not follow common sense. I will not re-purchase the 200-600G either.

This Sigma 500 is an easy choice for me within Sony, as I would never put a TC on a f5.6 lens, the A1 has plenty resolution, and I have no urgent need for more fps than 15. They seem to have put an effort in making this lens outshine the multitude of consumer lenses that get to 500/600. and I am not

Call me crazy, but I dont hesitate in good light to use the 100-400 or 200-600 with TC and crop mode with pleasing results shooting BIF. When the targets are close then it's bare, which is hardly ever. .

The new Sig 500 is crazy lite and small, only drawsback no TC, but that doesn't stop you to put your FF in crop mode, so that will get you 750mm .

A real small & lite set up would be the 6700 & Sig 500

Same. I was thinking about how nice it would be to shoot F/5.6 in crop mode on the A1. The 15 FPS isn't a major concern either IMO.
