Will you be buying the upcoming Fujifilm X100VI?
Yes, I'm planning to pre-order it as soon as it's available.
Maybe, but I'll wait until I've read reviews on it.
No, I'm content with my current Fuji camera.

That is a good point -- if people own other systems, this is not a huge upgrade. If I think I'll need IBIS or I'm shooting video, I'm going to bring the XT4 and more lenses and leave the 100V at home.

But if the 100VI is the only thing I am bringing with me all day, more megapixels and IBIS can't hurt.

For me the main drawback of my 100V is the f2 lens. I wish it were f1.4, but I get why it's not. If you are someone who likes more control over depth of field, there are better options

Probably the only thing that would get me now to pre-order after the V is if the X100 did have a faster lens than F2. But physics can't be beat, so I would assume anything faster than F2 will ultimately make it a larger camera.

I already have come to terms if I needed a faster lens, I can use my X-T4 with the 23mm WR F1.4, or go FF with my Sigma FP w/35mm F1.4 DG DN or small with FF with my fast Voigtlander lenses.

I know I have GAS, but in today's used market there are so many other cheap options that probably work better than having "an all-in-one" camera for different types of uses.

Now if Fuji did really want go even more niche, how about an X100 with a manual focus fast F1.2 lens? My X-Pro3 with the Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 is a small setup with a fast lens. They can get it probably smaller if the lens is fixed and designed entirely for 1 camera ala X100!

I guess the only thing that would trigger me to upgrade from the X100V would be if the AF/tracking ACTUALLY was noticable improved in real life situations. Although the algorithm is updated I fear the lens design is too slow to keep up. I guess I will have to wait for user feedback before I decide, but then the camera is probably sold out already 😅

Your underlying point here — whether an update is “ACTUALLY” noticeable — is a very important one to keep in mind, and there are several layers to it.

In general, some kinds of improvements definitely are noticeable. For example, the ability to work at higher ISO values, a change in maximum aperture of focal length of a lens, and so on. But not all are immediately significant. Often they are welcome incremental improvements of the sort that typical come with nw model releases, but which are not significant enough to sell off the old gear and replace it.

A few years ago when the f/2 “Fujicron” lenses started appearing I read that the new 35mm f/2 lens had faster AF than my older 35mm f/1.4. At one point I had the opportunity to shoot both side-by-side for several weeks, and it turned out that I never noticed any meaningful difference in AF performance at all. I have little doubt that some specification on the f/2 lens was “better” than on the f/1.4, but this did not translate to difference that mattered.

Another layer to this is whether the update will be noticeable in one’s own personal photography. Let’s take the 40MP sensor for example. A 40MP sensor clearly has the ability to produce more detail in the image, at least when used properly. But since the 26MP images are already very good in virtually all cases, unless you are pushing things already with that older sensor you are unlikely to see any real difference in your photographs. If you work carefull and precisely and you make prints at the upper boundary of print size, then the added MP can make a difference. If that’s not how you work, it is likely that you won’t see a difference, or at least not one that matters.

One more: IBIS is a feature that I think is worth it, especially with a camera like the X100vi that is most likely to be used in hand rather than on the tripod, and often enough in situations where it may make the difference in low light. But what if your intended use is tripod-based shooting? Here a difference that cold be significant for one photographer may be meaningless for another based on how they use the camera.

I know your question wasn't directed at me, but I can share a recent experience: I was at the finish line of a gravel bike event, and wanted to slow my shutter speed but it was sunny as all get out. The built-in ND filter allowed me to get photos I wouldn't have gotten without it. That's just one specific instance, but when you want to slow your shutter enough to get movement in your subjects, it comes in handy. (Of course with the new camera, you may even be able to hand hold it. I had my V sitting on a stable table...) :-)

Having said in a post way up on the first page that I would just get the 18mm Voigtlander lens for my X-T5..... I do have to admit that the X100VI is exerting a strong pull. Is it GAS? Maybe. I did own both an X100s and an X100t, and sold them both. Great files but slow to use, and I preferred the flip up LCD of my X-T series cameras as I'm at the age where getting down to the ground for a low-angle shot takes awhile.

But I liked the design and I'm ok with the one lens concept. For a lot of my work, especially personal work, travel, street, a ~35mm-eq lens is fine. For a two-lens kit I would bring the X-T5 and a 33 or 56mm lens, as I prefer to shoot with two cameras rather than switch lenses.

The new model adds a couple of standout features with the 40mp sensor and the IBIS. Very tempting. And I can always sell it for close to (or more!) than what I paid if I end up deciding that it's not for me. Hmmmmm.

Re. leaf shutter: fill flash at all shutter speeds. This used to be the main attraction of the old Hasselblads too, for pro. film shooters, and it's all about fill flash. In most portraits outside, I use -1.3 EV flash power; no eye and nose shadows. This is the work I used to do, and its main value, if SOOC images are what you want. No post processing, IOW.

Add to this the light here is very bright, and I like to use the lens at wide open or close to it—ND filter to the rescue.

No other small cameras that I'm aware of have both these features. This makes the X-100 series unique, for me. I also like the fact that leaf shutters are extremely quiet—gold in some situations.

Thanks to you and Sharona for answering my questions. The way you use both features makes complete sense.

Also, these newer X100 models actually have full flash sync up to 1/4000th vs the last time I had one (X100s) that only went up to 1/2000th. I also absolutely second what Kit said above regarding how quiet/soft the leaf shutter is. Definitely makes me less concerned about having to move to full ES to be discrete and also avoids banding. I use my Sonys with much faster readout ES speeds when I want/need to go that route.

My wife says the V shutter sounds like the camera is blowing a kiss and now I can’t unhear it

It’s definitely a camera I don’t worry about bothering others by shooting it.

I recall doing the same thing with the original RX1R, but Sony swapped out the flash in the RX1RII (with a pop-up EVF). It was cool to have the EVF, but it was disappointing to lose the flash, especially considering the lens had a similar leaf shutter and high speed flash sync.

I was crushed when they changed the sportsfinder magnification from 1.25 to 1.29, now its at 45mm equivalent.

I wish they would implement 40mm crop mode somehow...

No, too expensive. I still have the X100 original 12 MP camera. Maybe I’ll get the 100VI if it comes down in price. It’s very expensive for what it is.
