Damn right.
I can't wait until a snotty M3 owner (not that YOU are) here in LA revs on me and wants to 'Go' off a light.
Ahhh, that'll be sooo much fun.
This is in / above the M3 CSL firepower........
LB/HP ratio is Identical to the CSL and can you say Qauttro grip....
Many 'ghetto rigs' or home grown solutions seem to be closely guarded secrets. Personally, I don't understand the secrecy as it's the photographer, not the gear, that makes the image. Its too bad as I'm sure these guys had to learn from someone else....too bad they don't feel obligated to give back to the community.
I went through a period back in '97 where I was looking for a car mount system but couldn't find anything (probably wasn't really looking hard either) but one thing stuck out in my head as I asked people that used a rig system... they wouldn't tell me. Even the rig was a closely guarded secret then.
I have no connection or knowledge about him, but I admire his photos. I'm not sure if he gives any technique hints away in his text.
Ah the M3s. When the STi first came out I think they couldn't beleive they were getting passed by a stock Subaru at the track. I think they've resigned themselves to it now. The 540i drivers are still in denial. I autocross, and the only Audi's making any headlines are the old 90 Quattro in HS. The new ones are all way too heavy to compete (500 pounds too much). But I'll admit they have nicer interiors.
These days I've been doing more with video cameras in/on the cars on course. Trying out different angles, editing them together. Not the same thing, but it has its appeal. In-car video of a hillclimb is pretty intense.
Mate I only just got told about this thread and I am blown away at these images, BUT if I tried to do that here in Oz , as sure as hell some bastard would croud the car and smash the camera.
Awesome , I'll have to get my Limpet grip out again and experiment.

Looks as if I am getting rid of my '02 M3!!!
Pshh just wait for the E90 M3 to come out. Hopefully the new V8 won't continously grenade itself like the S54. As for me, my 97 M3 sedan still suits me just fine
Have to admit the RS4 is a beautiful car even though i'm a die hard BMW fanatic.

The new M3 and RS4 will be a good race.
M3= lighter, 20 fewer hp and RWD
RS4=new Quattro system (40/60 split) and more HP, adjustable throttle repsonse and suspension damping from the steering wheel (ala Ferrari).
Don't bother me with a straight line run, show me some balls on the canyon roads(or the Ring) and tell me what my tail lights look like..
You'll pry the keys to my RS4 out of my cold, dead hands...

Ivan,
that last shot is catalog worthy man... great stuff.
I did some more tonight too.
I'll post them in another thread.....
Kurt
Thanks.
I think you're right about using a lighter camera. I set up my bogen3021 in the back seat and the images from the 10D came out with less camera shake than the 1D. But, the 1D did give me more coverage on with the 15mm FE. I just picked up a cheapy suction mount from adorama to try some exterior shots. We'll see how that goes. Let's keep those fingers crossed. Darn you for this thread

I've talked with Easton Chang several time while he was starting to setup his rig system. He has posted his first rig setup before, but really regrets it because many people duplicated it and it took away from the uniqueness of his work (my words, not his). His newer shots really show some creativity when it comes to the rig... and short of renting one at several thousands a day... there is no other way to get these types of shots. The rigs are very well guarded because they are a major part of the photo... the photographer does play a part (and so does photoshop), but the rig is the biggest thing.
If anyone would like to share how they do it, I'd love to see... I've started to think about working on one, but have yet to fine a simple way to attach it to the side of the car (old cars/trucks yes, but not unibody cars).

Dang that thing looks like a battering ram/joust.... With such a long arm, wouldn't it be difficult to control the camera shake, no matter how stiff the arm is. Does it have some sort of IS?

i have read these forums for a long time now and i thought this would be a good thread for me to jump into.
these rolling/rig shots are really great to look at....they have really caught on recently and they have become the new "it" thing it seems in automotive photography.
im glad you guys brought up eastons work...he is a good friend of mine and i have known him for some time now. he actually has some work featured on a site i am a part of right now.
if you guys are into these types of shots you should really check out both of these sites....both feature some amazing up and coming automotive photographers

Kurt - I had never heard of Shelly Ward, but I believe you're 100% correct. All sorts of great info in the Shelly Ward Enterprises website (http://www.shellywardent.com/). Do you happen to know how they mount the rig to the chassis? I have an idea for cars with frame rails, but all the modern unibody chassis really boggle my mind...
I'd like to setup something like this, but I have no need to go 30' out with a video camera. I was thinking something made from aluminum tubing (triangular mast with reinforcement) with some joints might work, but without modifying the vehicle I can't think of how to mount it.

I'm curious about the market or financial justification for these car rigs? There is no doubt the images are cool but who would they be marketed and sold to?
I like to try different types of photography because of the challenge and not necessarily to specialize and sell into a specific area. So for those of us who just want to experiement and try these shots out (ie. can't justify the $700), I would love to steer the discussion back to ghetto/build-yer-own rigs.
Anyone build their own and not a member of the secret society which prevents them from knowledge sharing?

Problem though the number of M3s sold will be much much more than the RS4, the RS4 is an "exclusive" car unfortunately but hopefully Audi will start to introduce the new quattro system in their other cars. At least from the latest I have heard (catching up on news as I've been gone for the last week), the RS4 is coming to Canada but it won't be me getting one.
