p.1 #1 · Car Mounts, S pix & behind the scenes...

Well, I got my new Camera Mount for on car imaging.....
Just had an hour or so to play with it today.

Here are some images and some info on the tech data...

Camera: Canon 1DmkII (going to buy a 20D since I feel my mkII's are too heavy and I'll get less vibration with the lighter body)
Lenses: Canon 15mm FE, Canon 17-40L and Canon 85 1.2L (non mount shots)

this shot is with the mount hanging from the moon roof.
exposures were about 1/4 sec...

http://kurtjones.com/Car-Images/Car%20Mount%20Test/17-40L,%20inside-after.jpg

These shots are from the drivers side, rear door with mount as shown below.
expsures were about 1/10th sec...

http://kurtjones.com/Car-Images/Car%20Mount%20Test/Window%20Mount.jpg

This shot was with the 3 point mount on the passanger door/window.
It's not framed exactly like how I wanted it, but I need a few more gadgets to get it out far enough.
Again, shot around 1/10th sec...

I'm going to buy some more parts and do some more experimenting soon.

I'm also going to be doing a Spec Audi commercial on HD in March, so I'll post a link to that mpeg when it's all edited.

Here are two beauty shots, on a gloomy So. Cal day....

Hope you all had a good weekend...

Kurt,

These are awesome! Thanks for the setup shots too... Mind if I ask how much a car mount setup like that runs? Probably a ton

Well, this basic set up is only $425.

I'm going to add a few more bits and pieces to customize it better for my needs.

All said and done, I'd say I'll be into for about $700.
Plus, I'm going to buy a 20D for it, as my mkII's are a bit heavy.
IF I can lighten up the load on it, I'll get less vibration and can shoot at slower shutter speeds.

I was just shooting this in an empty parking lot, so I didn't get it out of 2nd gear.(even though I can hit 50-60 in 2nd)
When I get it out on the road, I can shoot a bit faster to get rid of mount/camera vibration, as I'll be able to drive the car faster as well.

Very cool!

I'm glad other people have the balls to hang their gear outside of a car. I dont think i would.

Just saw this on AW... I'm pleased to see it here too.

My only criticism is chicktronic instead of manual.

Timmy,
Can you say Insurance ?
I have lots of $$$$ invested in gear and it's ALL insured.
Camera goes down on a shoot, I get a new one....
Worth the peace of mind and it's also a write off.

STP,
Yeah, the Tip was a last minute decision as I felt I didn't want to pay the GG tax.
Don't worry my friend, at years end when the RS4 is in the garage, it'll be a 6 speed Manual again..... driven manuals all my life until this one. The Tips pretty good, but I miss the ole double clutch/heel toe maneuvers on the canyon roads....

make sure you get a policy JUST FOR YOUR GEAR.

Don't waste your time with riders on your home owners.
Major horry stories with making claims that way.

I deal with a co. in LA that only does photographers and film folks.
I recommended them to ALOT of folks here and they're all hapily insured now.

go to www.groupinsure.com and tell em I sent you... (no, I don't anything...)

Thanks a ton for the advice.

This looks like exactlyw hat i'd want to do. After a recent car accident and dealing with my insurence company, i dont trust them enough. Point is, i cant even imagine my home owners guys willing to pay for a broken camera, nor the headache dealing with that.

Thanks again.

nice stuff - can't wait to see some night work from this set up. Even though I'm in the u.k I always ship my kit in from the us and it looks like you have wet my appetite, so can you give me a link to the place you got this from please kurt. What else would you need to get, longer poles maybe?

Cheers for the inspiration

Kirstin,

filmtools.com

Yes, I'm going to get some custom 5/8" Carbon Fibre rods made.
Also, get two more 6" suction cups to sturdy the 2-3 pole.

The set up now, is the main 6" cup with two 2" ones for the supports.
3-6"ers will help it.

I'm going to do some night shots with it soon.
It'll look bitchin...

Kurt ... great shots (and nice S4).

What suction cup mount are you using? The one I'm referring to is the one by itself on the rear left window. I have the Manfrotto 241 and it works pretty good but I haven't summoned the courage (or trust perhaps) in sticking it on the outside of the car and doing something similar to what you have done in a controlled environment also. Probably won't do it until it gets warmer as the colder temps makes the plastic a bit more rigid. It did fine with the 20D hanging off the moon roof also though the rough roads here in Toronto were enough to shake the camera a bit...

EDIT: Forgot to ask, when you had the camera hanging off the sunroof, are you using a bracket or anything special or just hanging the camera upside down?

Tanner,

It's from filmtools.com

6" suctions that hold 70lbs each.

http://kurtjones.com/Car-Images/Car%20Mount%20Test/pass%20door%20mount.jpg

I'm going to get 2 more 6" cups to replace the 2" support rods cups.
Then have custom Carbon Fibre rods made as well.

Nice shot there fellow Audi guy.
What are you driving ?
B5 A4/S4 ?

Yep... browsing through filmtools.com... 70lbs, definetly a LOT more than what the Manfrotto 241 can handle, which is 6.6lbs only. Trust it only with me near the camera if it's hanging off the car and somebody pushing the car. If this photography stuff I'm doing turns out, I'll probably need to look at getting two more supports like what you have.

Currently driving an 01.5 A4, that shot was from last week, didn't bother cleaning the windshield and thinking of getting into an 2004 S4.

I hung it with one 6" suction cup.
baby spud, knuckle and 6" long 5/8" rod.
Then, my 486 Ball head, on adapter plate went onto the 6" spud.
Yes, I did hang it upside down and inverted the images.
I used this set up, just had the camera upside down from the 6" spud..

You'll love the B6 S4.

I have a 2005, but I'm jumping up to the RS4 when it arrives late this year or early next year.

Thanks Kurt.

The other thing you could try, but you might already know this, if you can get the shutter to open for a couple of seconds (which will probably restrict you to photoing at dusk/evening) grab a buddy and have him/her push the car for you which will reduce the amount of vibration which worked well for me.... this was probably half the normal walking speed and with a six second shutter.

I'm almost thinking the light Digital Rebel would be perfect for this.

Wouldn't the digital rebel and other light cameras undergo too much shake as the car moves? it would seem like ... the heavier the better, to an extent of course.

Nice shot Mike.
What kind of Porsche is that ?
Or is it a car with a Porsche brake kit ?
I was thinking of doing the 6 piston Porsche kit for my S before the RS was said to be coming to the states.

Scott,
I feel the same way, but I've felt the 20D and feel that it will do just fine on the mount and the lighter weight will cause far less vibration.

Once the camera is on the post 1-3' away from the body of the vehicle, the heavier the camera the more bounce you'll get.

Friend's 996, 40th anniversary. Mount was right on the headlight with an 18" extension, he didn't want the mount on anything else but the window. Haven't tried the mount on my own car with the exception of the window as I want to test for any marks and such but the car's covered in road salt right now.

Nice.

After I pick up the RS4, I'm going to probably get a used 997 for a weekend car.
Always wanted a Porsche and the wife's good with it as long as I bring it what I do.
So, after the RS is paid off, I get the 'fun' 2 seater.....

You know, as long as the car's got a good coat of wax, it'd won't scratch.
I put it on the sides and the truck lid and used 3 suction cups each time and not a mark on my baby....
