Maybe someday we can buy a Phone, TV, Computer, Camera, Car and only specify what we want and nothing else. Loose the other 20 or 50 options you don't use or need or want and just what you want or need, .
.
And just think how powerful that item would be needing to only process a few things.

Looks amazing, I had an A9 and moved up to the A1 but could use a second camera. Think I'll probably get another A9 mk1, that's one of the best used deals out there. That 300mm though, might need to save some pennies for that.

Z8 cheaper. Sony does not understand that they need a good eshutter camera at around a7r5 price point.
A9 iii is aimed at pro sport and action shooters who can make use of its exceptional abilities. It's not a surprise that Sony has released the camera and the 300mm lens before the upcoming Olympic games. I am sure they wants to lure all those professional sport photographers to Sony. This camera is clearly not aimed at you, nor at me as I don't even shoot sports or any sort of action. If this camera doesn't fit your budget, a used Sony A1 does which can be found for around $4000 nowadays. A1 is a better camera than Z8, IMO.If it were me, I would choose a used A1 over Z8 any day. Just all the available lenses for the Sony system alone, makes it a better choice.

At long last, global shutter arrives for still imagery! Digital finally can do what film has been doing all along, hallelujah!
I truly thought (and was banking on) Panasonic beating everyone to the punch with their long-ballyhooed organic sensor, part of the reason I went all-in on L-mount...looked like the horse to beat but, once again, I was played for a fool by a camera company!
Major kudos to Sony on this! Sony fans and users have every reason to be thrilled!
In the meantime, I'll be waiting on the slumbering Lumix folks to see what their next FF'er has to offer before deciding on my next move. And here I thought I was gonna be dead-and-buried before global shutter arrived! Ha!

Glad to see Sony pushing again. The A9iii has some cool specs but nothing to make me replace my RV. Wonder if they would consider shrinking this in a A9c 😀

As others have reported above, and the spec sheet confirms, the a9III has a base ISO of 250 and maxes out at 25,600. Also, it's not a dual gain sensor. If Sony hasn't nailed DR and noise then this could be a fly in the ointment.

The Z-mount long lens line up beats Sony quite easily IMO, but not easily enough to justify switching systems.
I have no reason to think so but I agree when it comes to long tele lenses, all three players are probably at about the same stage as of now though the lenses aren't exactly equivalent. The person to whom I responded, did not seem being a long tele lens shooter anyway. I checked his website, and to me, it seemed his talk of Nikon over Sony was not justified. For me and for him Sony is clearly a better choice: better autofocus and better lens line up.
PS. Forgot to mention: there are third party long tele zooms ( from Tamron and Sigma) in the Sony ecosystem which as far as I know aren't available in the Nikon and Canon systems. These lenses are more affordable than oem so for budget conscious shooters, Sony is still a better choice even in the long tele range.

As a Nikon shooter, I'm super pumped to see Sony keep moving the bar both with the global shutter and the 300/2.8.
300/2.8 as a prime may seem less important to lots of folks in a world with great 100-300/2.8 zooms (and it probably is), but this 300/2.8 is almost the same weight as an older Nikon 300 f/4 D IF-ED AF-S (1440g). I'm hugely in favor of all the lens makers figuring out how to shed mass and make lighter, fast telephotos. I haven't bought any exotic telephotos yet in Z mount (or F), but it's good to be spoiled with choices. ...Show more →
Yeah, this 300/2.8 GM is Sony's lightweight supertelephoto like Nikon's Z 400mm f/4.5, which is so light (1160g). So nice to see what were previously very large lens types come down to being actually portable. If you compare to say, Canon's EF line - their 300mm f/2.8 II is 2.4kg, and their 400mm f/4 DO II is 2.1kg, both of which were touted for their light weight.

I wonder if this global shutter tech would make its way to the a7s, if there’s still relevance in that model?

There's not much extra room. That's just regarding width. I think CFE-B are deeper too.
If you compare body sizes of A7,9,1, as they get bigger, it's not by many mm.
Nikon Z9, they could fit 4 x CFE-B and maybe a toaster as well.

I guess. It’s not like they need to accommodate that much more room.

Switching can be done in very different ways.
A9 introduction started my interest in switching to Sony. I was using Canon 1DXII.
2 years after release I bought A9. Used it for 7 months with Sigma 500 f4.
By then I realised if I could only keep 1, it would be A9. (I still have 1DXII).
So then I bought the 200-600.
That was 4 years ago and now Nikon 800 6.3 has me very interested.
By the time I get one, Z8 MKII or other body will have been released and enough feedback will be available to be sure it's good. Then it will be a decision between 400 4.5 and 180-600.

Global shutter is impressive, but like a lot of people the low res is a big deal breaker as a wildlife shooter. I own A9 and since buying the Z9 it's gathering dust and will be put up for sale shortly. 33MP and a regular stacked sensor might been enough to get me to jump with all the other nice changes. As it is I'll wait and see what the A1 fw update brings, but if it's not pre-capture I'll wait for the A1 II. I will say though the Canon's R3's already poor value just got a whole lot worse. Still one epic failure from Sony, 120fps 14 bit RAW and the camera still only supports old CF-E A standard not the new 4.0 with 2x the write speed. If the new standard was too late they should have gone CF-E B with that level of performance.
300 f/2.8 weight is amazing just wish they would release a 400 and 500 f/4 that are also super low weight.
2kg 500 f/4 now seems within realm of possibility and would be an instant buy.
