Very interesting, a direct comparison of the Thypoch, Laowa and new Voigtländer 28 1.5 would be very welcome!
When comparing the rendering (just the photos I could see up to now) of the Thypoch 28 with the new CV28f1.5 I have to confess, that I prefer the out of focus-rendering of the Thypoch 28 (sometimes the Out-of-Fokus-area of the CV has a bit harsh look with double structures).

^ That pretty much sums up my impressions based on the limited sample images we've seen.

Bastian: strictly based on image character/rendering, how do you feel the Thypoch 28 compares against the Laowa Argus 28/1.2? (Of course realizing that one is Leica M optimized and the other for various mirrorless systems such as Sony.)

I guess you are thinking of the Laowa on Sony and the Thypoch on something with a thinner filter stack.
At close to mid distances the Laowa has amazing rendering thanks to very high contrast, wide FoV and nice bokeh.
Out of ~250 lenses I have used one of my favorites.
So I definitely prefer it to the 7A 28mm 1.4, Thypoch 28mm 1.4 and Nikon AF-D 28mm 1.4 here.
Not sure yet about the Sigma 28mm 1.4, just arrived two days ago, but it is way too big anyway.
Sadly the field curvature pattern of the Laowa is very unfavourable at longer distances.
If that wasn't the case, it would probably be my most used lens.
From my initial tests the Simera looks better at these distances (as your find edges modification confirms).
To illustrate Bastian's point, you can clearly see the Laowa's field curvature (top image) bend away towards the background at the image periphery, which is the opposite of the Thypoch. The tree at the far right a bit in the distance is clearly focused with the Laowa but soft, as you would expect, with the Nikon (bottom image).
Bastian, will you be posting a review of the Nikon? Based on this one photos I do like its color better than the Laowa, which looks a bit flat and muted in comparison.

Yeah, maybe I release that one next 🤔

It looks like the production model has black ring in the front... It has not released in US yet. It looks like this is more like 28mm version of Mr Ding 50mm 1.1 and could have been a good choice with a more ergonomic body which CV has. Hopefully they will listen the customers for an updated model...

Their whole thing is that DOF scale which is why the focus ring is in such a bad position. They are not going to change that because that is their hook.

I think if Thypoch had brought the 28 to market 1 year ago- They could have established something.
Now with the Voigtlander 28 1.5 coming out to what is appearing to be great feedback so far- I am not saving 400 bucks to go with this lens, the tried and true CV is going in my bag-

Yes and no. Not everyone is using these on an M camera, or exclusively on an M camera. I'm looking forward to Bastian's review to see how the Thypoch also performs on Sony (and by extension, other mirrorless systems), where its size and weight disadvantage compared to the VM on the M system will be mostly irrelevant. But Typoch's ergonomic design blunders are another matter...
As great a technical performer as the VM appears to be, I still prefer the rendering I've seen from the Thypoch 28. However, their 35 is less interesting, IMO.

As interesting as the 28 goes, anyone actually worried about dust and dirt and grimes accumulation within the dof scale (potential making it sticky?) 😳

That would be my absolute least concern.

Adapted on E-mount the focusring moves 10mm away from the camera so I dont mind the ergonomics. But the latest updates of Bastians testings lead me more (for my usecase) in the direction of the Simera 28 (compared to the CV 28 1.5).

@BastianK@ Is the 28mm review coming soon? Can we know the date?
I never received a final production model and I also don't have a timeline when I will get one.
Trying to follow up on that as we speak.

Interesting—I hope you get one. They would be wise to send a production version.

Looks good, but will be sent out only after CNY at the end of February.
If everything goes well I will do a big fast 28mm comparison with 6 lenses in mid February though and will include the early sample of this 28mm.
