I suppose the 40/2 is the closest to the pancake lens for this Zf body.

No thumb stick and a video flip out screen kill this camera. Those are not things you put in a camera for photographers.

Tracking your finger on the lcd to focus isn’t great. I had that years ago on the LUMIX G7. Your face is already in the middle of the camera and having your thumb under your face trying to focus isn’t comfortable.

They had to release us with a thumb stick, if they can’t figure a photography tilting lcd then a fixed lcd is better than a video lcd. I guess not such a big deal since you can just flip it that way and leave it, but if you’re going to make it articulate then do it for photography and not video. Like the lcd on the XT5.

The other thing. Lenses. Unfortunately a retro looking body isn’t enough. Bodies need lenses. Don’t have it. They’re lenses for their modern mirrorless cameras and they don’t fit with the look of this camera. Older lenses need an adapter and that just makes it unnecessarily bigger than it needs to be.

So, again Fuji is the retro king. Better go for an XT5. They already have a lineup of awesome small super fast f2 AF lenses.

With a proper lcd and a thumb stick

Looks like a great overall package. Great stabilization, good enough video, good resolution. Once again Nikon releases a camera that, not many were looking forward to. The bulk of their customers aka Z6 and Z7 owners like myself are still waiting for a proper Mark III with a new monitor and new evf, not the same hand me down 5 year old 2.1m dot monitor and 3.69m evf. Come on Nikon you can do this. Give me a Z6 III

Wow it's crazy how the layouts and looks of those two cameras are so similar! The Fuji has the advantage of a dedicated AEL button, and a dedicated AFL button. And nicer built/looking lenses.
The Nikon - FF baby. Which only really matters if you have a bunch of those lenses (F mount or Z) which I do.

XT-5 - 40mp if that matters. Cheaper..

As a previous Fuji shooter - there's really no comparison since its APS-C vs Full Frame. You'd need the Fuji f/1.4 lenses to match the f/2 on Nikon, and those are not small or cheap.

A 50f2 is a 50 f2 regardless of the sensor size. You can put two cameras exactly in the same place without moving them and shoot the same 50f2 on both cameras and see for yourself. The only difference is the APS-C shot is cropped. Otherwise they’re identical.

Don’t bring up background blur because that’s just for people who don’t know how to compose. Burying things in blur is the most amateur thing you can possibly do.

But even then the blur is identical. The blur only changes when you move closer to or farther away from your subject.

Don’t know what you mean by “match”. But the Fuji system if you want a small retro camera with manual controls is still the best system. That’s all there is to it.

For the Nikon I would go manual and get an adapter. not for the Nikon lenses because it Would make the camera too big. I would get a Z to Leica M and get Voigtlander lenses.

But the Fuji has small fast AF lenses. And the Voigtlander close focus adapter Fuji to M is great and small/thin.

I don’t know how many hundreds of comparisons between Fuji and every full frame camera are out there but if you can see the difference without a microscope let me know. Any difference that would matter to anyone that is.

I like the idea of this retro Nikon, but you need a whole retro ecosystem of manual lenses for it to make sense. Also it would need to have a screen for photographers and not videographers and a thumb stick for heavens sake.

The Nikon Z6II makes a lot more sense. They would be my choice.

If it was me I would’ve gone all the way with the ZF and not included any video features. Focus on photography only.

The way a camera is normally used is that one chooses the camera position, the angle of view, the depth of field and then applies settings on the camera to get the desired end result. To get the same picture you need to use a shorter focal length, wider aperture and lower ISO to match angle of view, depth of field and noise in the final image across different formats. I.e. a 35mm lens at f/1.4 at ISO 400 (say) on the Fuji and a 50mm lens at f/2 at ISO 800 on the Nikon (FX) would yield similar pictures.

Don’t bring up background blur because that’s just for people who don’t know how to compose. Burying things in blur is the most amateur thing you can possibly do.

That's funny. Full-frame camera users can stop down the lens as needed to match the depth of field of smaller formats, and get similar results. The main differences occur when going for low light or shallow depth of field, where full-frame gives more options. In the deep depth of field case the formats are more similar to each other in terms of capability and results.

Not a lot of difference if you shoot in the way described, i.e. one stop lower ISO with the Fuji, one stop wider aperture and a lens with focal length 1/1.5x relative to the focal length of the full-frame setup to match the angle of view. You get similar noise, similar angle of view, similar depth of field, basically the same image.

I like the idea of this retro Nikon, but you need a whole retro ecosystem of manual lenses for it to make sense. Also it would need to have a screen for photographers and not videographers and a thumb stick for heavens sake.

The Zf will work with the currently available and future Z lenses; the lenses don't need to be manual to enjoy physical controls on the camera body. The flip-out LCD is a popular choice. I don't see how the screen position is related to the distinction between stills and video. It's off-axis when flipped out but probably cheaper to make and lighter than the two-axis tilting screen that stays mostly on-axis.

If it was me I would’ve gone all the way with the ZF and not included any video features. Focus on photography only.

Unfortunately that's not considered a viable market today. Fuji also place emphasis on video nowadays. (I agree with you that it would be nice to have photography cameras for photography and video cameras for video, as the hybrids are compromises for both, but the world is currently enamoured in video.)

Unfortunately the Z system doesn't seem to have a lot of options that suit this style of body currently. The 40mm f/2 looks neat but outside of that, even the prime lenses are quite long physically (for instance the 35mm f/1.8S). Will wait to see how the Z series develops.

You can mount F glass onto Fuji X just fine, and in many cases, get better results even with AF than with the Fuji equivalent.

The only issue, if you call it one, is your apparent focal lengths all grow by 1.5x

Nikon's Z SE lenses are a bit of a joke. Plastic construction made to look "retro", terrible focus by wire, no aperture ring. They are simply a sad body kit for a bland Z lens. The Voigtlander Z series is where it's at if you don't need AF and want a lens to pair with the Z F that actually looks, feels, and behaves like a REAL retro lens.

The Fuji body also has a few QOL upgrades over the Z F...dual UHS-II SD, better joystick, better screen for stills photography, better ISO dial, better grip, and better film sims. It's honestly a no brainer to me if you want a dial camera that the Z F ain't it.

There is the 28/2.8 (same size as 40/2.0) and the 26/2.8 (almost half the size of the 28 and 40), not very much but I guess there are more to come.

One big issue I have wiith some of those Nikon Z SE lenses is that not only are they super plastic, but even the lens mount is plastic? They could not make it cheaper if they tried. Even the $69 TTArtisan 50mm f2 Z lens has a metal mount. As well as the rest of the lens being metal.
And again this goes against the metal camera w knobs vibe Nikon has got going on w the ZF.

If I got the ZF i would use the 24-70 Z f4 Z I already have and never use, and maybe some Voigtlander primes.

I would prefer the heavier metal mount. It doesn't have anything to do with lightness. It's about making it as cheap as possible which is why the other Z lenses use metal mounts. it just goes against the whole ZF metal camera ethos. Here is your metal camera with knobs of brass. And here is the matching plastic lens that came out of a box of Crackerjacks.
