@sum1sgrampa - same here, Gary. Ordered early and glad I did. It's a wonderful lens to use for birds/wildlife, and the low cost was a bonus.

To me it's just such an effortless lens to use. The flexibility of the zoom needs no explanation. Some people find it heavy, I personally don't feel that way. And the fact that you don't need to carry along another lens/and or body makes it seem even lighter. This is an overused phrase but it doesn't get in the way. Just lets you take pictures

Tufted Titmouse - walk on the park.
Walking our campground today (WITH camera, for a change).

Missed the Evening Grosbeak this morning because I didn’t, brought camera with me in the afternoon.

And I’d never seen one one of those before!

So here’s the consolation prize!

To your point, it is such an effortless and joyful lens to use. The AF is quick and accurate, IQ is solid with little to no CA even in difficult lighting. This past week I was in Chicagoland and it was perfect for shooting warblers and the nesting Black Crowned Night Herons. A 600mm PF would have been smaller and lighter, though the lack of zoom would have made it a no go (a lot of images shot between 250-400 mm). It is a heavy lens weighing in at about a half pound lighter than my 800 PF though the 186 feels just as if not heavier than the 800 PF because of the weight distribution. Nonetheless, it is one of the best values out there.

Went to a new spot, couldn't find anything all day but eventually heard this Eastern Kingbird. Took me about an hour but eventually managed to get a shot. Medium tone curve, heavy crop.

To add to the gushing about this lens, it takes the 1.4 TC really well as well. All 3 of these were shot with the 1.4 attached. Barred Owl and one of her 2 owlets (the other one was being elusive). I've got 3 local parks with mated pairs of barred owls and 2 of the pairs have owlets.
