My 180-600 lens is mostly used on watercrafts... I often use it on a kayak or on ships when I'm looking for marine mammals.
Currently, the Monterey Bay is packed with humpback whales. I spent 3 hours on an overcast morning looking for whales. In that three hours, I think we counted at least 25 indivituals. Of the group, we were fortunate to to find a pair of whales spending a lot of time and and above the surface. While I didn't see any head to tail breeches this time, I did get some decent and unique above water perspectives...
cheers,

Spectacular images, Bruce, especially the speed and accuracy needed to anticipate the action, see a breach, react, and focus in time! It must have been a truly exceptional experience out in Monterey Bay, thanks for sharing

Got to spend the afternoon on my parent's back deck. Whiskey in hand, comfy chair, z6iii and 180-600 on a monopod. Had the deck door open while it rained to see who would stop by the feeders.
Pine Warbler
Drenched Eastern Bluebird
Eastern Towhee
Juvenile Bluebird who refused to beg on the same perch as his parent after they first arrived when I was not ready for them

Thanks...
A good captain and guides really helps to make shots like these possible.

I went out looking for humpback whales again... the first 3 hours were a bust, but on the way back we encountered a whale that decided to make a little noise

Amazing! The kayaker is not as close as the long lens compression makes him look, but still......

Thanks for commenting...
The whale was getting ready to do its third breech and I saw the kayaker just hanging back. I scrambled to line up the two in the frame and was trying to put the kayaker between the pectoral fin and body. My error was shooting at 10fps. I hate shooting at 20fps because I can't pick a "best" from so many shots. However, in this case, I would have caught more of the kayaker between the body and fin if I was shooting at a faster rate.
I've been photographing whales since 2017... you can never have too many experiences and successes to not recognize when your shots could (and should) be better... I won't make that mistake again. Here's to learning from experience!
