Official: Sony A7C II, A7CR and FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II
Sony just announced the highly anticipated A7C II (33MP), A7CR (60MP) cameras and the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II lens.
The new a7C II has a design similar to its previous version. It uses the excellent 33MP BSI sensor found in the bigger Sony a7 IV. It also comes with impressive abilities for taking photos and shooting videos. On the other hand, the Sony a7CR is a new and compact full-frame mirrorless camera with very high resolution. It takes many of the great features of the a7R V and puts them into a smaller body, all at a noticeably lower price.

Copying this message from the rumour thread:

The A7CR definitely brings something new to the table... but isn't the gap between A7C and A7Cii minimal if you only care about stills?

- Slightly? better sensor (24Mp vs 33Mp)
- Significantly? better AF
- Slightly? better EVF
- Extra dial, extra custom button and new menus

In Europe, I just bought a new A7C for 1500 euro from Amazon, the A7CII is 2400. Is the above worth it the 900 extra euros?

Makes that 61 mpx far more attractive. That would be my choice by far. I’m fine though

a7cII still with 4K with 30fps... only 4K60 with a APS-C crop, WHY?!

and that grip is still smaller than 6700!

I'm glad Sony was able to increase the EVF magnification from 0.59x to 0.7x!

Yikes. The price on the A7CII is HORRIBLE. Should have been $1799 max given the competition and the specs. How do they think they can price themselves SOOOOO high compared to Canon etc.?

I'm surprised the a7CR isn't getting a better viewfinder. A high res EVF similar to what the other "R" bodies have would make more sense. I guess that will be the upgrade in the a7CR II.

don't forget menus and connectivity, very specific differences but could be a big deal for some it is for me, and most are praising the better optics on the EVF this time, doesn't make it great just much better

It's my biggest disappointment about the 7cR, ie. the lack of high/higher res EVF, I mean, even the Nikon Z7 from 4 years ago beats it.

Also, the 3" 1M dot LCD is so outdated too, but I guess there's no room to squeeze in the 3.2" screen without making the camera bigger?

I do understand Sony has to keep manufacturing costs down by producing the same body parts for c2 and cR, but hopefully in 3-4 years we will see the 3.2" 2.1M articulating+tilting screen added.

For me “2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder with 0.7x magnification” even on the a7cr sounds like a no go for photographers. Or does the EVF have optical qualities beyond the data sheet? To me VF adds tremendously to the fun of shooting.

Same reason 4k60p is crop on the a7IV, the sensor readout speed is too slow for 4k60fps in FF.

The slow readout is what I dislike most about the a7IV, rolling shutter is bad, it’s too slow for FF 4k60 and it makes the electronic shutter mostly unusable.

They've addressed my only gripes with the original A7c.

1. Added a front dial
2. Added the stacked mode dial to make switching between photo and video quicker
3. And even increased the magnification on the EVF from 0.59x to 0.70x. Did not expect that.

Awesome.

I hope the EVF will allow the attachment of an eye cup. Love the grip attachment that comes included with the A7cR.
