Yeah, I think that design is a little long in the tooth and designed for film. For non-m bodies I believe there is significant color shift due to the sensor glass. I guess my wish list would be a 35mm 2.8 Skopar III with the same design as the 28.

Since they keep the 35/2.5 VM in their lineup (it's one of their bestselling lenses at least in Japan as it only costs around 33K yen as new here and might be popular with film camera shooters as well), I think it's less likely that they would bring out a new 35/2.8 alongside it (it would most likely cost twice as much) for now...

I agree that 35/2.5 is less good on non-M bodies though. I had the LTM version in the past and it didn't play very well on Sony sensors.

The Voigt 35/2.5 Color-Skopar is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be. While I personally lean towards the CV 35mm f/2 Ultron, I've found that the Color-Skopar performs just as well in terms of sharpness at similar apertures. It's an excellent option for those who value compactness, being even smaller than the Ultron.

It was not even good on m43 with its thick sensor glass...

I enjoyed the old LTM version (I had the LTM P (Pancake) version) on my NEX-6 back in 2013 but then I got A7R and there was quite a lot of field curvature / IQ degradation towards the edges with the lens on that camera. Eventually I traded away that lens. Would like the lens quite a bit otherwise but I think it really needs a film camera or thin sensor stack (on Full Frame).

I tried this lens, and the copy I received was decentered so badly I actually laughed out loud when reviewing the images on the LCD. Maybe I should give it a second look. It is tiny!

Yes, give it another try. The copy I had was well centered. Rendering is more even compared to the Ultron.

Sadly, I encounter that problem a lot with the older Voigtländer lenses and therefore rather try to stay away from them.

Gladly, I have never encounted that problem with older Voigtländer lenses, neither has my brother. We both have the 35/2.5 in LTM but diferent versions. Just as a balance to the previuos statement

After many months of dithering, I finally ordered one of these. What's one more 28mm?

Looking forward to using this as a just a grab and go tiny single lens option.

Very nice Rob!
This tiny lens excels when shooting street photography, just like the images you share! It provides superb IQ stopping down a bit for candids.

Hello folks, I am trying to look for a small 28mm to match with my A7CR. I understand the issues about using wide angle M lens on Sony cameras but there are no good compact 28mm choices for E mount either. I wonder which one, among the three latest Voigtlander 28mm, would perform slightly better in IQ - the Nokton F1.5, Ultron F2 or Color Skopar F2.8?

I plan to use the 28mm lens mainly for day time street/ travel so most of the time will shot at F5.6 or above. I tried checking Fred's test results for the three lenses - Ultron appears to be the better option?

Have used all of them and they are all similarly bad on Sony.
Wouldn't be able to pick a favorite here, won't be using any of them on Sony.

If you want to shoot stopped down anyway get the 28mm 2.8.
If you care about wider apertures have a look at the Voigtländer 28mm 2.8 SL IIs for F-mount.

Not as small but still small and actually works properly on Sony.

Thanks for the suggestion, I don't really know there is a F mount option!

It might be hard to believe, but the original Sony 28mm f/2 is still one of the best options for this focal length on E-mount. While it may not be a stellar lens, it has great flare control and pleasant rendering.

Unfortunately, none of the Voigtlander options yield great image quality off-axis.

I just heard that Light lens lab will announce a 28mm for the M-mount. Let's see how this one performs on the Sony.

I recently picked up the CV 40/2.8 Heliar that I'm really enjoying and love the small size.

I have the CV 28/2 Ultron II, but love the size and styling of the 28/2.8 Color-Skopar type 1 as a good match to the 40/2.8 as a small out and about combo (not that the ultron II is huge).

How does the small 28/2.8 Skopar stack up to the ultron II?

Thank you

I've posted comparisons on the first page of this review: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1819458/

In summary, both lenses are similar in terms of resolution and contrast. Personally, I prefer the rendering of the f/2.8 version. The main downside of the Color-Skopar is its higher vignetting.

The 35mm skopar f2.5 works perfectly on an m digital, no color cast and is actually quite sharp on the corners. On mirrorles like the Sony/Panasonic suffers from terrible corner smearing but on a m is beautiful lens, and priced very low

I agree. It performs excellently on the M digital and has a unique character in its rendering. If I didn’t already have the 35/2 Ultron, I would have kept my Color-Skopar.
