Fred: how many copies of the Ultron II did you go through before this copy? The infinity performance you're showing from it is not what I'm seeing with the one I got... nowhere near as flat a field as yours at wider apertures. Or are you refocusing for mid-zone and corners? And on the M240 I'm getting pretty significant green/cyan edge color shift. Actually pretty disappointed with it. But your copy IMO looks better than the new 28/2.8, at least for technical infinity performance.
Are you finding that the 28/2.8 is stronger/sharper/more consistent across the frame at nearer distances?

Thanks Fred, that cinches it for me. I hate that little intense vignette in the corner, reminds me of the old OM 18mm. Even though it's correctable I hate it.

Are you talking about "dog ear" vignette that is just at the farthest corner? I can't tell if it just looks that way because the exposure is so high or what. The Canon 28-70 f/2 has that type of vignette at 28mm, and it's actually nearly impossible to remove without a custom radial mask (it has a normal vignette gradient that is addressed in post with the light falloff tool, but the dog ear part doesn't conform to the falloff, it's its own thing).
The 28 Lux does it too. It might be the hood. I haven't really noticed it with the Canon 28-70, but I haven't used it much stopped down for landscapes/cityscapes with a lot of sky.

If only Fred could get hold of the OG CV 28 3.5 Color Skopar and test that against the new 2.8 version.
Hmm, I wonder who in the LA area might have one of those??

I see a very strong purple cast on the blue skies....am I the only one seeing this?
I noticed this too and thought it might be a WB tint issue, but if not, it would be a pretty easy hue tweak in LR, etc. Sometimes a lens from a given manufacturer will have a different color/tint quality than most of that manufacturer's other lenses. This is exactly what I experienced with the 28 Cron ASPH v1. It had a slight magenta shift/tint compared to my other Leica lenses. The 90 Summarit was also like this. 90AA has a slight cyan shift...
