What’s that split prism at 5:35?

The image with the split prism is the viewfinder of the FM2.
This is briefly shown as a FM2 reminiscence during the scene.
Can also be seen at the very beginning of the video (~ 0:51sec) where he starts with the FM2 before turning to the Zf.

p.28 #2 · Let's talk about the Nikon Zf

I was in one of my local camera stores today. I got to hold and play around with a Zfc. I hate to say it but it felt cheap and plastic to me. I have never owned a camera that has felt this way. I was really surprised by this. I expected a solid, metal feeling, durable body from a camera that looked like this.

For anyone who has held the Zf is it similar in build and materials? Please say no...

I have read that the Zf is a solid metal body and is not built like the Zfc

Z Fc was built to a price point, mind you. However, I don't have much experience wiht other body at the same price
point so no idea how Z Fc material is in comparison to its competitor. Z Fc body is mostly magnesium alloy but is covered
in metal like plastic probably just to keep the cost of cosmetic down but yes, it does look and feel kind of cheap.

Z F has more metal bit in it. Shutter button is solid brass and looks like it will take soft release so a little
more fun and customization is possible. It should feel better than Z Fc for sure.

I haven't read all through this thread as it would take too long to find out if this has been asked. When in B&W mode, does the EVF show B&W?

It would seem that if the Zf has the EXPEED7, then this processor will go to the Z6III and Z7III along with all those features that the Zf has over these two models - like 8 stops VR possibly, all the AF options and performance, pixel shift just to name a few.

From what I gather, in B&W mode, you will see EVF in B&W as well. The raw file will stay in color as expected.

Yup, when I had a D750 and then a D850 (as well as a rented DF) you could select a bunch of F mount lenses in the menu, and store them. Then when you mount one, you just pull that up w a custom function setting of your choosing, and the camera knows what the lens is. Aperture feeler etc worked perfectly. It was like using the lens on an old F3. Really nice.
The Zf, with all the retro and very nice knobs and dials, begs to be used in the same way.

Even my D7000 has it as a menu item, I used it quite a lot. Don't understand why the Z cameras don't have it.

A YouTuber removes some of the black paint to expose partially the brass dials here at around 15:22 timestamp - they look nice and probably add some weight too:

I just checked it. With apertures from 5.6 to wide open the aperture is the same as on the screen. From 5.6 to maximum stopped down the aperture stays at 5.6 and changes at the moment of taking the image. There’s a lever inside the FTZ.
On the Z-camera’s there’s no setting (that I know off 😬 ) to use the aperture ring (as with DSRL’s).

The aperture that the lens is actually at is the same as indicated in the display, and follows the adjustmemt by the wheel.
The Frimger allows use of the aperture ring on a lens with a chip, and even if you set the lens to f/8 for example the lens actually stays at full aperture (as it would on an slr) until you halfpress the shutter release. In order to do this (and to meter correctly) it needs the chip to tell the camera what the max aperture of the lens is, and what aperture the ring is set to. It

A YouTuber mentioned specifically that they like the B&W switch because they get a B&W EVF. That’s consistent with how other Nikons perform with B&W-styled Picture Styles, too.

Agreed that the Zf is likely a sneak preview of the Z6III. I’ll further guess that the Z6III will change things by having a pull-out LCD, two CFE slots, and a higher frame rate.

I would put money on the table the Z6/Z7 Mk3 will lack a mechanical shutter like the Z8/Z9.

What you are saying is that they will be stacked sensor cameras, because that is the only way to get rid of a mechanical shutter. This would put them in a similar class to the Z8/9 series, but at a significantly lower price point. I really see no indication of that happening.

Yep. Would expect the Z6iii to be something like 33MP BSI non-stacked and the Z7iii something like 60MP BSI non-stacked. There are of course the Sony A7iv and A7Rv sensors for exactly this. Always a small chance Nikon does something with a different sensor vendor as well.

Sony can do fairly amazing AF with non-stacked sensors so in theory Nikon can offer a lot of improvement over the Z6ii/Z7ii still with non-stacked sensors. And the Zf will of course give us an idea of how much or how little.

And Nikon could just close the dang shutter during lens changes (or provide the option for such) for dust reduction (real or imagined).

Nikon should have gone in a different look and direction with the full frame model and base it off the F2. It is such beautiful camera.

I think I would've gotten this if it had the 45mp sensor from the Z7/Z7ii. But now it doesn't feel like an upgrade (in terms of image quality) to the Z5.

Ok, I see what you are talking about. It is to save settings for non-cpu lenses. I set that a long time ago for my non chipped AI-S lenses and use one of my Function buttons to recall it. Playing with it the only thing it seems to do is set min shutter speed to 1/focal length. So for my 105 1.8 AI-S it picks 1/125. In AE with auto ISO, the speed stays at 1/125 with the ISO changing as you change aperture with the aperture ring.
If you turn off auto ISO, shutter speed climbs and falls as expected w aperture changed. You cannot change aperture with the camera body as it is not a chipped lens.

When you set it to Manual metering, that you can control the shutter speed directly but this works with Auto ISO where it picks the ISO for 'correct' exposure depending on your Shutter/Aperture combination, or full manual if you do not have it set as Auto ISO.

Basically I do not see any difference in behaviour than if you just had a super cheap 'dumb' adapter if you are using non-chipped lenses.

With chipped lenses it doesn't make any difference. The camera recognizes that it is a chipped lens and so ignores whatever non-cpu setting you have. You still get a message saying you need to set aperture to the min setting, and you still cannot control the aperture with the aperture ring. The main difference is the FTZ can AF with G and higher lenses.

Bottom line - with the Z cameras all pre-setting non-cpu lenses in the menu does is select the min shutter speed based on 1/focal length. I do not see aperture setting saved in EXIF.
