p.7 #4 · New Cosina Voigtländer 28/2.8 VM and LTM lens got announced! | |
Leica lenses absolutely do tend to flare, and/or produce ghosting, even a significant portion of the “modern” ones. In addition to the lenses mentioned in the past few posts, I can add the APO Summicron-M 75mm ASPH, which can easily be prompted to produce a purple ghost, just like my Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. (Peter Karbe, of course, has spoken of how he based the 75 ‘Cron on the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH.)
Even though I am really learning to like using flare and ghosts creatively, one big reason that I have the Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4 ZM is so that I can shoot with M cameras when there absolutely must be no flare or ghosts, and I cannot wait for lighting to improve. This is also why I am likely to add a Cosina Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar VM, sooner or later. An important thing I saw, in Jimmy Cheng’s Youtube presentation that compared the Leica APO Summicron-M 50mm ASPH, the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, and the Cosina Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar, is that the APO Lanthar may show more chromatic abberations, at least in some conditions, than the APO Summicron, but that the APO Lanthar seems more flare-resistant. Chromatic aberrations can be fixed, in post, but flare is a problem. Of course, I subscribe to the concept that one can never have too many Fifties.
Notably, many of this presentation’s images seemed to be shot in sunny, glare-inducing conditions much like I have to contend with, much of the time, where I live. (Sunny, though often hazy SE Texas, where so much interesting activity happens under shade trees.) Not saying that I base a buying decision entirely on one Youtube presentation; this one just came to mind as a good example of the APO Lanthar’s flare resistance.
Nothing against Leica lenses, of course; my newest is the 2022 “re-issue” of the Steel Rim Summilux.
My formal training was in the “genre” of evidentiary/forensic/crime scene photography. I added the Leica M system, after retirement, as an antidote, or therapy, for that oft-sad, grim duty. Even so, there are occasions when I want to shoot images that are optically-well-corrected.
