I love the optical performance of my 28mm Ultron vII, ergos and looks are not at the top of my list however. I really do like the looks and the ergonomics of this new 28 2.8 type II. Even though I usually shoot this FL between f/5.6 and f/8, I am not sure I would trade a full stop of light for the better looks and ergos. But since it is one of my favorite FLs I just might go for the better shooting experience. I guess I will wait until we get a full review, I try one myself

Am I alone thinking the CV 28/2 Ultron (black paint) is handsome? Love the looks of both 28 and 35 Ultron brass lenses.

What a fun and stellar offering. The type 2 is SO tiny, when shown in comparison to the already tiny ultron. One starts to wonder about this vs a brightlin star/MS Optics in terms of performance vs size...I would choose this for my Pancake, personally, though honestly, the 28 ultron is already very compact, making it a luxury to ask for another lens at 28 that's compact-er.

Indeed, but I think the MS Optics Apoqualia serves a different purpose. While I have it, I am very, very interested in this new lens, especially the Type 2 version and think I will get it too.
If looking for a "special" look, I would use the Apoqualia and otherwise the Voigtlander. In addition to the elements given by Fred, the Apoqualia also has a rather awkward ergonomics with the not so easy to change aperture, tiny and easy to lose cap, etc.

I don't think the Ultron is ugly, but it is vintage in its esthetics. It and my 21mm Color-Skopar are my only two vintage style lenses. The rest are more modern Leicas. I think this new CV 28 2.8 type II has a more more tailored, modern look that better matches the Leica. After all, I am shooting the very sleek, and contemporary M11 digital body, not a film body.

What is the point of this lens, when we already have great 28/2?
Proper pancake lens I believe, but would people buy it if they have 28/2 already?

I also think that brass versions with that thick black paint is best looking lens ever !
Look and feel when touching it, phenomenal. I have 21/3.5 Color Skopar VM and love that paint.

I think the answer to that might depend in part on how it behaves on thicker mirrorless sensors. My understanding is that the old 28mm f3.5 Skopar behaved pretty well on mirrorless sensors, while the newer Ultron is relatively flat field on M bodies but has field curvature on a Sony. If the new Skopar is relatively flat field on both systems, people who shoot both M and E (or other mirrorless) might prefer the Skopar over the Ultron for that reason (as well as the size advantage).

The straightforward response is that it's not needed.

The Voigtlander 28/2 Ultron II lens is a gem and it's noticeably smaller than the Leica 28/2 Cron lens and almost the same size as the slower Elmarit (only 4mm longer). The new CV 28/2.8 lens takes it a step further with its super compact and lightweight design, which is highly appreciated by many.

We are still uncertain about its rendering capabilities. It's likely that its performance is comparable to the f/2 version, but they may differ in other aspects like optical vignetting, distortion, flare control, etc...

@Jin2023@
It really seemed like Voigtlander were resting on their laurels with the Ultron. If this 2.8 performs well on thicker sensors like the 40mm apparently does, it will satisfy many.

Maybe Voigtlander just saw Leica users buying Chinese lenses for the first time (TTA 5.6) and thought 'Absolutely not!'

My TTA 5.6 might become treated as a single coated variant alongside a VM multicoated one

40/2.8 may perform well on thicker sensors because it's almost the same lens as the original 2014 40/2.8 VM that was designed and optimized for Sony Cameras to be used with CV VM-E close focus adapter but there's no certainty if the new 28/2.8 will follow the same trend.

I'm probably going to pick up the new 28/2.8 on any case and give it a try on my Sony A7C but I'm waiting for release date to be announced before ordering it as I will be away from home for almost 2 weeks in August and would like to receive it after I get back.

Have you already placed a pre-order for it in Japan, Juha? If it's similar to the CV 28/2 Ultron II, it may not deliver optimal performance on the A7C due to a significant increase in field curvature.

Here is ho the CV 28mm f/2 Ultron II compares in terms of performance on the Leica versus Sony, particularly in the corners:

Jin2023 wroteThe Type I the whole thing moves when you’re turning the focus. The aperture ring moves also. That would be annoying.

Is this a confirmed fact, or a guess? The product photos look like the focus ring is a separate ring that is not connected to the aperture ring?

What 'whole thing' moves when turning the focus ring? Thanks.

I haven't place a pre-order yet. Since I'll be in Finland for about 2 weeks in August (around the middle of the month), I'm waiting to see where the release date will be before I pre-order. If it gets released during my holiday I'd rather pick it up from Map Camera or Fujiya Camera physical shop instead after coming back. I think it will probably not be sold out immediately.

Thanks for the review link! It does show a big difference between Leica and Sony. On my A7C I can manage with the 28/2 Ultron II for infinity shots by focusing on mid-frame and stopping down to f5.6 or further, it works well enough to my taste (probably better on 24MP vs. high res sensors) but it would be nice if there was less sensor related field curvature. My legacy 28mm rangefinder lenses need to be stopped down further than the Ultron for similar performance so I've been OK with the Ultron but would be delighted if Cosina made an E-mount version of any of these some day. I'd also happily take a new Fuji X 28mm FF equivalent lens from CV (I hope they would release one next year or so).

After comparing the new 28/2.8 with 28/2 II on my A7C, I might trade one of them away when the next exciting new lens comes along.

In the meanwhile I'm enjoying the new Apoqualia

This new 28mm Color Skopar lens is a very different lens from the old SL version: 8 elements in 5 groups (new/M mount version) vs 6 elements in 5 groups (old SLR version).

Anyone know how the old lens behaves on full-frame? Cosina claims "Wide angle lens with edge-to-edge sharpness" for the old version, I would assume the new one with more complex optics should be even better.

Thank you, that is very clear that the Type 1 does rotate the entire lens. A bit disappointing really. I can see in the same video that the Type 2 behaves like a normal lens, just the focus ring rotates as you might expect.

Voigtlander really are a weird company, producing far too many variants of lenses and far too many lenses imho, rather than just adopting a less is more approach.

I mean I am a ‘fan’ of LTM and M Mount lenses and follow their releases closely but am constantly confused by what they are offering. I can only imagine what a less involved observer might make of their endless releases of similar lenses in different bodies and finishes. I think they have utterly terrible PR/marketing imvvvho.

I think I’ll pair the 28mm type I with my existing 40mm type 1 for a nice small SL rig (M users cringe).

When it comes to optical design, the rear groups of the two lenses are similar, but the Ultron lens has two additional groups. It appears that Cosina only provides MTF graphs for their high-performance APO lenses, and I wish they would release them for

Looks very similar ... after the front element. Primary difference looks to be the shape of the three front elements forming convex > convex path, vs single element being concave > concave path.
