I very much value both. The size is not significantly different when packed. As for weight, in this case, is worth it to allow for wildlife photography. A 70-200 does not work for that at all, sp you have to account for an entirely extra telephoto lens in addition. So, take the 70-200 and add in a 100-400. Is that less than the 100-400 by itself? I'd never leave the country without the 100-400.

Everyone is different. I stopped using even the 1.4x tc years ago. I didn't like the image degradation. Forget about the 2x.
I travel with 3 cameras and 5 lenses usually. In Mongolia right now. Japan before that.
For travel overseas, especially with my family, I only carry my Leica Q2 or M10-P with a 35 cron.

Interesting as I am leaving this coming weekend for a 2 month trip to Thailand and SE Asia. What other lenses do you bring beside the 100-400GM?
I am taking my 100-400 as I will be photographing wild elephants in the mountains along the Thai-Myanmar border and for boating activities. Up until just recently all my other lenses for Sony were primes, but I did pick up the Tamron 20-40 f2.8 zoom as I want to reshoot many temples I have photographed in the past with my M4/3 gear, but now with my A7RIV and 61MP. Most of my photography will be city, street and day/night markets though and I am thinking the Tamron along with 50 f1.4 GM and Batis 85 would be best for that.

I always bring my 2 sony bodies and the 12-24 2.8. On this trip I also brought the 100-400, and 24 gm. Also fuji gfx 100s, the 32-64, and 120 macro.
The 24 was in case I tried astro, which I haven't so far due to the small weight limits getting around Mongolia.

So yeah, I agree. Everyone is different.
Photography is a major, major part of the enjoyment of travel for me. So much so, that I do little to no photography while at home. It just pales in comparison. Since I travel abroad for 90-120 days a year, this works for me.
I only have one child and he is nearly 16. He has been with me during a large portion of my travel.

Agreed. Ricoh GRiii and M11 (now, used to be M240) with a 35/2 and 90/2.8. Going lighter and more compact has proven to be a better process with more creative images made and more fun with less gear.

Unfortunately I bought a copy today but have to return it.
I suppose it's just mine but was clearly defective.
Unable to have consistent focusing and soft at 200mm.
Made around 150 pics and most of them are just out of focus. At full sunlight and 1/640-1/1000 shutter speed
Edit: It's weird as it seems to be sharp at high shutter speed (from 800) but I just get shaky (and sometimes OOF) pics when lower SS. I have never had any problem with other teles but I'm really struggling with this one.
Two more days of test shots and I'll take a decision

After another set of 50 pics I decided to bring it back to the shop.
Lots and lots of shaky and out of focus pics. No matter which aperture or SS I use. 90% are like the examples below

The tenor of the early reviews seems to accord with my experience:
It’s a lens that trades some (mainly edge, but also bokeh) image quality (of the GM II), and its slightly inferior stabilisation, for compactness / weight, closeup ability, a stop, and inconspicuousness. This is certainly the better walk about lens for me.

Any chance the setting for OS is incorrect (1-2-3)?
Any chance focus limit was incorrectly set?
Hope you were not in zone focus?
What focus point did you select? Were you in Continous Focus? It looks like your first pic the ladies shirt side is sharper than the face. In your 3rd image you can see the focus plane along the rock ledge and a sharp blade of grass sticking up.
And I assume you did NOT put a filter on this lens?

I just sent my copy back for a refund. The lens barrel had enough wobble at 200mm that I was worried about dust. I really wanted to love this lens but the autofocus wasn't significantly better than my 70-350 G on my A7R5 and the image quality wasn't really any better IMO.

APS images processed right can be hard to distinguish from full frame! When I’m serious about critter photography I use my Canon R5 and 100-500…sure is big and conspicuous though.
The Sony A7R5 with the 70-350 G is a great combination for long hikes. I was hoping this lens would do the same with some help from Topaz gigapixel.

Hope yours was just a one off bad copy. Your making me nervous as I just sold my 70-350. My replacement 70-200 F4 ii is sitting on my desk right now. Unfortunately I'm out of town. Looking forward to testing it out when I get home. The 70-350 is one of the most underrated lenses though in Sony's portfolio.

It probably was a one off, I haven't seen any indication that anyone else saw this. I just didn't want to gamble again. and repurchase since I like the 70-350 so much. Once bitten..twice shy.
All in all, I think it is a really nice lens especially for macro. I'm really old and my 110mm Voight is getting harder to use as my eyesight get worse.

I played with my new lens yesterday shooting birds in bushes and in the river. Without TC's, no complaints. I did try comparing a far off bird with & without 2x TC and thought cropping was better than TC, the lack of contrast was noticeable.

What body are you shooting with? Does this same 2x TC affect IQ the same way with other lenses?
