I dabbled with similar process sometime back, so I can appreciate this. Been playing lately with the Q3M and some other techniques, too.

One of the first things I did when I got the Q2 was add a tiffen pro mist 1/8 filter. The micro-contrast out of this lens is actually a little too strong for my taste, but it gave them lens a little cinematic character too, with some subtle, but interesting bloom in light sources.
