Got my first freeze. Firmware 1.1.0. Got stuck on the "auto power off" screen. Was a full battery, went down to 60%. Camera was warm to the touch. Only fix was a battery pull. I submitted a bug report to leica at info[at]leica-camera.com (if there is a better way to submit a report, please let me know).

Did you submit the bug report through the Leica Fotos App? This is my usual approach to contact Leica for such things as this appends and sends the camera's logs with the report. I almost always receive a response with in a few business days.

Potentially interesting for SL2/and -S users:

Lithium-Ion Battery Battery BP-SCL6, for Q3

* Custom-made for the Leica Q3, this rechargeable lithium-ion battery is also compatible with the Leica Q2 as well as the Leica SL2 and SL2-S. Continuous monitoring of important battery data ensures safe and comfortable operation."

https://leicacamerausa.com/lithium-ion-battery-battery-bp-scl6-for-q3.html

I would like to give this new more powerful Q3 battery 2200mAh vs 1860mAh a try on my SL2 when these batteries become available for sale again in USA with the hopes 2200mAh power might give me more time before high-speed continuous and/or 4K recording disabling kicks in at 20% or below of the current 1860mAh SL2 battery. 🤞🏼

User PADAM posted this comment on a LUF thread--not sure of the source:

"Camera compatibility: Leica Q3 | Q2 *| SL2* |SL2-S *| SL*

Note* The certifications of the battery with these camera models are in process and completed by:

Leica Q2 by the end of September 2023
Leica SL2 | SL2-S by the end of July 2023
Leica SL by the end of December 2023"

The battery is a good point. I had one of the older style SL2-S batteries in it. Wonder if it would’ve happened with the new battery.

Sorry if this was asked and answered above but does anyone know if the Q2 battery works on the Q3? I know they're the same size, but am not sure if the Q2 battery's lower power is enough for the Q3. I assume it will work but it won't last as long. Yes?

Thanks,

Steve

It does. it works just fine for me, save for this one freeze. But unsure if it was related to the battery or not.

It’s hard to put the 28 Lux and Q together as a comparison. For me, the 28 Lux on an M body was a bit of a commitment due to the weight as well as restrictive MFD when compared to the Q. And although people love to pain-point the Q lens distortion, the 28 Lux is no saint. In high contrast backlit conditions, the 28 Lux can deliver truly cringeworthy purple fringing that I never noticed with the Q. The bokeh from the 28 Lux at mid-distance with busy backgrounds is also what I would call an acquired taste.

These are all fair comments and I agree with all of them.
You shoot a lot more landscapes than I do. I think if I were to shoot landscapes I would most certainly opt for the Q lens versus the Summilux-28 M.
For street/portraits/travel/general use, the Summilux-M just has that look that, while not technically perfect, is very pleasing. And I think people who don't know much about photography react to those photos positively. Just my opinion.

Q3 arrived today. Charging now, will update with some initial thoughts after I can take some photos with it. Have a professional shoot later this afternoon and I'm gonna try it in the studio as a B camera for fun.

Thanks. I have a Q3 arriving later this week and was hoping I could use an extra Q2 battery as a backup.

sounds like someone is salty because they didn't get a review sample. My dng files in LRC show 9520x6336 which is 60MP and this is with the profile applied already. The lens is the same as in the Q and Q2 and while it's not an APO it is a fine lens and suits the Q system well imho. Sharp in the center at 1.7 and decent troughout the frame stopped down. Noise at ISO 12800 looks better than my R5 from the brief tests I did and the Eye AF works good. I'm happy with my purchase and am

Congrats on getting the Q3 so quickly. I'm at the top of my dealer's list but I don't think Leica has even decided how many they are sending north of the border yet.

Lloyd is generally not a big Leica fan. He doesn't like rangefinder focusing and has very strong and technical ideas about how photography should be done and often Leica doesn't quite fit. I used to subscribe but his site can get expensive if you have broad interests. I personally prefer Sean Reid and find his reviews worth paying for.

This is a great question that I wish I had better answers for before I actually spent my money. But now that I have, and have extensive experience with both, I am happy to help, for whatever its worth

My first Leica was the original Q purchased back in early 2018. That was of course the gateway drug. Moved up to the Q2 in 2020. In addition to the Q series I have bought/sold a number of M cameras and have ultimately settled on the M10R/M10M combo with which I am completely satisfied. I purchased a 28mm Summilux-M in early

Thanks for the great post!!!

So I agree 100% with you on the 28 Lux. It’s really a lens I grab for events, late night out with friends and all around doing stuff lens. It’s mainly used for people and scenery when out and about. It’s usually one of the lenses that I get compliments on when I take people photos etc. Not sure if its me or the “look” Don’t really care its just a lens I love to use and its so easy to shoot. Getting things in focus at 28mm even wide open is simple with MF.

What I am lacking in my kit right now is a piece of gear that I don’t care about….Carry around an M11 with a 28 Lux is 14k on my arm. I don’t care that much, I bought it to use but I sometimes think, do I really want that camera on the beach, or on the boat right now?

The Q3 isn’t cheap but if I buy it with the intention of never selling it, and just beat the crap out of it, it may be a very useful tool for me to always have with me and can get rid of the care about factor.

I have a Sony A7rV that I use almost exclusively for professionally video ( I know odd choice but it works). I may give a shot the compact G lenses in 24 and 40. Way cheaper and about the same size. I just don’t enjoy how Sony raw files look and using a Sony is Meh. Cost isn’t that big a factor for this, it’s really about finding something I enjoy using at times I consider the most important.

At the end of the day, I need to get my hands on the new Q3. Locally they didn’t have the test body yet so I will wait until I can do that and see how it handles. Thanks Again!!

Both the Q and the 28 Lux M can be used for either purpose: high IQ shooting + general use. There is something quite special about the 28 Lux M, and it may end up in my bag again before the Q3. Currently I’m using the 28 Cron (Safari) on film to see if I will keep it. I’m hoping it’s a little more interesting used with film than it was on digital. If that doesn’t work out, then it will be replaced by the 28 Summaron and 28 Lux. My hope is the Cron can work as a single lens solution for 28mm, but we’ll see. Anyway, would like to get that sorted before I get another Q camera.

Personally, I think the Leica 28/2 Cron is technically outstanding, but a bit too modern for my taste. It's similar to the Voigtlander 28/2 II in terms of rendering, with slightly lower vignetting. Both lenses are great for landscape and street photography.

The Leica 28/1.4 Lux is something special. Despite being a newer design, it has a character-rich rendering without sacrificing sharpness and microcontrast. It has a similar look to the 35/1.4 FLE but it's significantly wider.

I appreciate your comment about the difficulty of comparing the Leica 28/1.4 Lux to the Leica 28/1.7 Lux because they are used with cameras that have completely different shooting styles.

Thanks for the kind words

Hate to break it to you but there is very little camera gear that says “Leica” on it that will get rid of that “care about it” factor you mention. Haha. I definitely understand that it can feel crazy carrying around 15k+ worth of kit but it doesn’t feel a whole lot better in that respect carrying around one of the Qs. My Ms and M lenses are far from mint as well, but what I’ve learned about these cameras is despite the price and nameplate they are meant to be shot and are really tough as nails. Built to last a lifetime. If you shoot with them they will all get banged up eventually but that’s just how it goes and part of the price of entry to get great photos. True for the Ms, the Qs, any Leica cameras.

Initial impressions of the Q3 just in terms of built quality. Typical Leica excellence. Very lightweight but maybe I’ve just been using heavier cameras/lenses lately lol. Flip screen feels robust and Leica like, I don’t agree with those who say that is looks/feels cheap. To me, it doesn’t, and I find the feature welcome especially for low level wide angle shooting which I do a lot of. The buttons on the right side are very firm and clicky with not a whole lot of play. I didn’t get much of a chance to shoot with it tonight as I hoped, so tomorrow am Ill take it out on my morning walk with my dog and see if I can get any sense of how the photos feel to me compared to the Q2. I totally skipped all of the M11 variants so far so for me, this sensor will be a true case of first impression.

John

I almost grabbed the 28 cron when they released that matte black special edition with the retractable hood. Awesome lens and form factor but that’s when I decided I probably would be happier with the 1.4.

HDMesa, the film application is really interesting. I don’t really shoot film and can’t really offer any meaningful expertise here, but I once shot a 35mm 1.4 FLE on my friend’s M6 and we were both shocked by how much better the color saturation was versus the vintage lenses he was typically using. I sort of came away thinking that these modern Leica lenses really wring quality out of certain film stocks perhaps beyond what the people who made the film years ago even thought might be possible.

Interesting, and it makes sense to me. I have also noticed that many film images taken with the modern APO lenses like the 50 APO are a striking sight when browsing through film threads, even at online resolutions. It's almost like you're looking at a stack of 35mm prints you got from the drug store back in the day and someone slipped in a print from a 645 camera

Yeah, the screw-on hood from the regular version 28 Cron makes it look like it's the length of the 28 Lux. The matte black and safari editions are a nicer design in my opinion. You should have grabbed a matte black one, though, since they now sell for quite a bit more than they did when new unlike the Safari version.

Thanks, Fred. Yes, the 28 Lux images have a certain something to them even stopped down. It would be cool to see side-by-side shots between the 28 Lux-M and 28 Cron-M all at f/2, though. When I had the 28 Lux, I was always at f/1.4 or f/5.6-f/8. I wish I had taken the opportunity to shoot a lot with it at f/2 just to see what I thought.

Took a few very quick test shots from my neighborhood walk this morning. Don't want to muck up the thread with a bunch of photos (can't figure out how to easily do that anyway) but I thought some first impressions might be helpful to others.

Q3 handles like a Q or a Q2, which is to say great. The articulating screen is awesome, easy to use and reliable.

Biggest takeaway here. I am reminded how wicked sharp this lens is. Even wide open, what is inside the focal plane is just wicked, wicked sharp. It feels like the original ideal of "cropping" down to your desired focal length has been fully realized, at last, in this camera. Mega crops hold amazing detail with resolution to spare. So I think the way to shoot this camera is just make sure you are getting the subject in there somewhere and you'll be able to frame it later however you want in post and it will be just fine.

Should have asked this above with my battery question. Does anyone know if the Leica Q2 hand grip (the one mounted under the camera, not thumb grip) works on the Q3? I know the Q3 bottom has the three pins for wireless charging but am wondering if the footprint is the same so I can use my Q2 grip on the Q3. From the pictures, I can't tell if the flippy screen changes the footprint or if the extra space it occupies starts higher up from the base of the camera.

Clearly, I would lose wireless charging and Arca compatibility with the Q2 grip.

Thanks,

Steve
