p.42 #2 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

I've recently reconsidered my obsession with high MP cameras. One of the best wildlife photographers I know personally sold his Canon R5 and switched to the R3 because he preferred the lower MP sensor. I don't know if some of his reasons are factually correct (ie. better low light performance with low MP sensors), but he doesn't seem hindered by it. With that said, I will probably not upgrade from the A1 to a 24mp A9iii right now. I would have considered it at 33mp + pre-capture.

A few days ago on another thread I said that if they release an A9III it will stay at 24mpx and just be a lot faster. Assuming SAR is right--and that's a big assumption IMO--then that would appear to be the case.

I still believe this is all misdirection and we'll see the A1mkII announced, or if they do an A9III, they will announce both. Super fast lower megapixel A9III to match/one-up the Canon R3 with the new IBIS and AI chip and a new A1vII with the same improvements in IBIS and AI, both available before the Olympics and with enough time from release to shake out any bugs and fix them with a firmware release.

We will know in about 24 hours!

This might just prove to be an excellent call. SAR have just reported that Amazon US have reduced the price of A1s by $2,000. A clue, perhaps? (Or, as is so often the case, wishful thinking on my part …. )

Haha! I don't think it's wishful thinking at all. Sony has been VERY consistent with the releases of their most popular models being in the 24-30 month range for 8 years now. It's been 33 months since the release of the A1. Remember the last round of rumors about the A9III resulted in....the launch of the A1, which was a total surprise with no rumors about it at all.

I really think that there will be no A9III, and we'll see an A1 mkII. Canon has already said they are planning their R1 release for 2024, and you can bet it will be soon to be ready for the Olympics. I can't see Sony letting that fly and only match up to a 3-year-old A1.

But who knows...logic doesn't always prevail.

EDIT: Also, with the firmware update to the A1 that gave us small and medium raws there is absolutely no real reason for a lower-megapixel high fps camera. Need smaller file size for your use? Change to the small or medium raw. Need more pixels? Great, you have them.

IMO the only reason Canon ever made the R3 with fewer pixels is that they weren't ready for a higher megapixel sensor yet.

I'm done buying Sony cameras at release MSRP. There are always substantial savings to be had fairly soon, either via flash discounts or saving 25% by buying used.

That's true with every camera brand for the most part. Why mention Sony specifically? I've shot with Canon, Nikon, Sony and it's always been the case. The only brand where it didnt apply for me was Leica. I actually made some money selling Leica lenses.

Hasn’t this been the case with any tech products the last 20 years?

I just don't see the logic in this. The price of camera equipment is relatively cheap in the scope of today's World. If a new camera brings features that would benefit you in some way, just buy it.

Tech equipment has a limited time at the top of the heap. It is the nature of things. But you should look at actual cost at exiting the position. Say you bought the Sony A1 on release day and shot it until replaced in 4 years. Then you sold it for 40% off when trading up. A1 new price $6,500, used sell price $3,900. Your net cost is only $2600 amortized over 48 Months. That means it really only cost you about $54 a month, less than $2.00 a day. Your 25% cheaper camera saved you less that $0.50 per day. Compare that to the daily rental charge on an A1. I see that as a real bargain these days. Saving your $25% is really not very significant when looking at it this way.

A very simple international trip to take photographs will cost you more that an A1. That cup of coffee you had while out shooting for a day actually cost you more than your camera equipment that day. Why sweat the little stuff?

Oh, I seem to hit a nerve :-)

I said I'm done buying Sony products at MSRP on opening day. You can do whatever you want, it is your money, time, value equation, etc.

In terms of why complaining on Sony? Sure, all tech products' value drop as soon as you take them out the store, the same is true for cars, etc, but it seems to me that Sony's value drop a bit more. A Sony a7IV and Canon R6 Mk II both list for $2,500 (apart from occasional sales, like now). A used a7IV sells for around $1,800-$1,900 and a used Canon R6 Mk II sells for around $2,100-$2,00. Hey, I'm not switching to Canon for that, just to illustrate that Sony gear prices tend to lose more value given their pace of innovation, new product releases, etc.

Wasn't the R6 mkII released 1 year after the A7IV?

Don’t forget the A74 was released over a 1.5 years before the R6 mk ii.

Anyone savvy has been able to get a new A1 at that price for quite a while.

No, I don't really have any sensitivity about such topics. It is just business decisions that are best made without emotion. We should all spend our money in the way that best suits us. I think I am probably less price sensitive than many when it comes to hobbies, photography being one of the least expensive I have ever been involved in.

It is all good.

I keep thinking that I'll find a hobby that doesn't require a ton of money....then I look at my recording studio with 20+ guitars/mics, then at my camera body/lens, then the 30+ firearms.........and realize that, for me, hobbies and inexpensive do NOT belong in the same sentence......

God bless my understanding wife

I think I've spent more on my photography hobby in 2 years than every other hobby I've ever had, combined.

See it is all individual. I have spent more money in a weekend on hobbies that I have on photography in my whole life. To put that in perspective, I shoot Sony A1/GM lenses, and Leica M11 systems. Life gets crazy sometimes.

There is a difference between photography and photo equipment acquisition. One can thoroughly enjoy photography on a minimal budget…not so if one is into equipment acquisition.
