Well let’s see what we get for $4500 to see if it’s worth it. To me the biggest question is the sensor resolution and don’t currently believe any of the rumors around that feature. If it’s in the 42 Mpixel range what else would it need to make it worth $4500. Is 30 fps 14-but lossless uncompressed RAW enough?
If it has the 30FPS in lossless compressed and 40FPS in compressed and they add a pro-capture type feature then that is all it needs to be worth $4500. It will be better than the A1 in every way except for resolution and the A1 is $6500.
As long as it gets pro-capture and is 33MP or higher I'll swap my A1 for it. There are also a lot of small improvements I experienced in the A7RV that the A1 doesn't have which the A9III will undoubtedly have that will make it a nicer camera to use.

Sony has no reason to have a 42mp stacked sensor camera when the A1, the clear flagship of the company, exists. I don't pay enough attention to Sony patents to know what sensors they have that they haven't used yet, but I certainly don't think the A9iii will exceed a stacked version of the A7iv 33mp sensor.
Sony, in their newfound Canon-ical boldness, NEED to have sharp differentiation between the A9 and A1 lines if they wish to charge $2000 more for the latter's successor.
Hopefully the A9iii gets the A7R5 LCD and the A1's EVF if nothing else for $4500. Those are both better than their direct competitors around the $4000 price point (from a spec perspective). Maybe the A1 EVF would work without so many caveats on a lower res sensor....Show more →
So if your right and it’s 33 Mpixels and has CFexpress A cards for faster frame rate the A7IV/A7CII maybe they will shock us and give us 40 fps or give it a $3500

Sony will 100% not drop the price, this is a pro level body and will be priced as such. There are a ton of low hanging fruit options Sony could throw into it that other Sony bodies don’t have and will never get via FW updates.

If it’s an A7RV with rear LCD and great EVF but with pro-capture and 30 fps lossless compressed im in but will sell my A7RV and keep my A7CR for landscape work. Then will also use it with my A1 for BIF and Wildlife. Used to use my A9/A9II for those so this would be gteat. Landscape doesn’t really need 8 fps but 61 Mpixels is nice.

100%
I bet it would only cost a bit extra after selling a used A1 to make the switch. 40FPS with the AI AF and pro-capture would be amazing.

If anything, I wish Sony would spend effort on modifying their body design and ergonomics.
No Sony don't do it. The controls are now very high quality,my hands now have great muscle memory for the body. After the flexibility of the configuration it feels like the camera was made custom for me. It is like picking something up with your hands. It takes thousands of movements and adjustment you are never even aware of. You just focus on the task and everything happens naturally.
Don't make me learn a new way please.

Yep, I am with you on that.
Ergonomics is all about button and dial placement and access and customisation.
Don't bother making an expensive curved shape with rubber that comes unglued in hot weather, strap lugs that fall off or mounts that are not machined to spec.
33mp A9iii - meh not interested - 44mp maybe - loved that A7riii sensor. But maybe it will have superior low light performance and that might be very interesting. After all a lot of sports is shot at night/indoors.

I thought you were all in on going back to the Z9 for the glass.

I said "modifying", not drastically changing. There is surely room for improvement in the body design, which I would very much welcome. More rounded design, slightly larger and rounder grip, bottom right corner not digging into the right hand as much, etc.

I’m very happy with my 2X A1 but sure they can be improved for certain things which is why I bought an A7RV. Was very happy with my A9II until the A1 became available. Adding a feature like pro-capture for an action camera would be great but I do wonder if Sony can build an AI assisted AF system that will track 30 to 40 fps. They haven’t done it and really no one else has it from what I can tell. Nikon has a stacked sensor Z8/Z9 but it’s only 20 fps with RAW and Canon’s R3 is only 24 Mpixel. Other features that don’t require maximum fps I’m sure will come but we will see in a few weeks I hope.

Yes, there is always room for improvement. I would have to feel them to decide.

The A9/A9ii both launched at $4500. SAR is big brained!
Sony cameras are horribly overpriced for what they are in today's market. $4500 for the A9iii seems low if you think about inflation since the A9, but seems just about right when you consider the Z8 exists and does everything the A9ii does, and more, and better, for $500 less dollars today.
I agree. Sony cameras and lenses are overpriced. But I guess regarding lenses the same can be said for Nikon and Canon glass as well. Thankfully Sony has 3rd party support!
I was strongly thinking of switching back to Nikon with the Z8. But being retired and on a limited income It would have cost me at least $6-7K to switch. And that's after selling my Sony gear.

Nikon has 3rd party support with rebadging Tamron as Z, legit Tamron lenses, Viltrox, Mitakon, 7artisans, Kipon, Meyer-Optik Gorlitz, Voigtlander, legacy third party F via FTZ...the list grows by the day. I get your point though. $7000 will buy you a lot these days, like at least 3 big macs.

And Tamron just announced the Z mount 150-600? So they are coming out with some great affordable glass for Nikon.
I just bought the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 for my A7IV. This lens is phenomenal to say the least. Took it out to West Fork at Oak Creek to test it out last week.

Tamron 150-500. Less than half the price of the Z 100-400, definitely worth checking out for people looking to dip into wildlife.
I think it was Sigma that has had the 150-600 historically.

That is still on the table. But hesitating when I think about the lack of a 3rd control wheel forcing me to change ISO on a lens control ring that has no consistency to its position on any given lens. Also lack of back buttons and more limited options (compared to Sony) to customize the buttons that are there. Also the really poor WYSIWYG EVF which I found difficult to judge proper exposure. And I'm not convinced 4.10 has brought the Z9 to A1 AF levels just yet. Add to that I'd probably go Z8 to save on weight which doesn't even get that AF update till next year. And of course the cost of doing a full switch is prohibitive.
So I will wait and see what the A9III brings. SAR seems less and less convinced it is coming on Nov8/9. His video today is talking about maybe not till January again??
