I have a 50mm already, so for me the 75 or 90 would be almost exclusively a portrait lens and always shot wide open. I did read that there were/are some issues with the 90mm and calibration with M cameras. Though, I read another reviewer who said it wasn't calibrated properly with his M10, but was calibrated properly with his M11. I have an M11-M and SL2-S, to that could be a non issue for my situation.

I'm curious how much of a difference there is between the two in respect to wide aperture purple fringing in high contrast image areas and 'bokeh fringing' (magenta edges around OOF high contrast areas in front of the plane of focus and green edges for OOF high contrast areas behind the plane of focus). I just re-read the 90's review thread and didn't see sample images illustrating bokeh fringing control. It's covered for the 75 earlier in this thread here. TBH, I feel like this is a general Voigtlander weakness unless it's an APO design.

I am not the best at lens assessment but think the 90 is pretty good against the light and has reasonable bokeh both in front and behind shot wide open. I think the apo label is fair even though it isn’t a top tier lens. I imagine it is better than the 75 for fringing.

Yes, just that my impression from various comments is it's maybe more of an APO-lite lens.

MFD through mid-distance focus. Really digging the OOF rendering of the lens for head/shoulder mid-distance work. It's a fun lens, thanks to the size and performance. Really enjoying it and will pair well with the 28 as well for a compact kit.

I also bought a copy of this lens recently. Pairs very nicely with the 35mm f1.5

Had mine out on a little nature walk today--caught a bee gathering pollen on apple tree flowers. Had never seen the actual pollen as shown gathered in clumps you can see in the photo. I like this lens quite a bit, but I find I usually shoot it in B/W. For a compact mid speed tele, I find the mid to long distance OOF rendering pretty good. The 75 Lux got busy and beady in these contexts.

Great examples recently! I got mine on Friday but haven't had a chance to use it much yet... I did find it hard to mount on my M11 — couldn't get it to mount all the way initially, and was about to return it, but eventually I got it and now it's easy every time. I wonder if something had to loosen up on the lens mount. I also echo that it's tougher to focus than my other lenses, but then I haven't shot a tele on an M before, never went past 50mm, so I think that's mostly on me. The size and weight, and finish on the lens are great.

My one not great example, focused on the wrong eye – I blame the dog for moving

Thanks to Mark @mark1958 who helped put me at ease. I went and ordered the Ultron 75mm f/1.9 MC to be used on my GFX 50R. He did warn me of a pretty hard vignette on GFX but I still quite enjoy the images with roughly a 10-15% crop. Some images can even be used without cropping depending on the scene and f-stop used. I plan to do a write-up on my site before long. Here are a few samples with approximate above-mentioned crop:

I like his videos, but I usually come up with the opposite views he has. He says he can't see the difference between the MC and SC samples, but I can clearly see a huge difference in contrast and color. I wonder if he has impaired color vision. And why is he always recommending the lens or camera he currently owns? Does he not see that he does this consistently? Why even bring the topic of the 75 1.5 into the discussion at all, especially when he already has a video on that lens versus this lens specifically.

I saw a big difference between the coating versions:

I have been consistently surprised how little people can “see” with contrast and colors especially. Even many seasoned resources/reviews. Or maybe it’s how little they care. I think it’s more of the former. Or that it’s all addressable is post which I’ve heard but haven’t seen myself.

In Fred's flare handling comparison, I definitely prefer the MC because the character of the SC flare doesn't look artistic to me like the 50 Lux ASPH or the Steel Rim reissue does. But in Matt's video he compares non-backlit images, and I feel like I prefer the look of the SC images in those cases. A few edits in post on the MC shots might give the same look, but even the SC colors looked a bit more appealing. But perhaps the colors are just more appealing to me in the SC shots because I'm not being distracted by the darker shadows in the MC shots, I don't know. I've been thinking about getting the SC version anyway since I like my MC so much. I think the SC would go well with the BwXX I usually have in my M6 while I use the MC on the SL2-S.

It is hard not to become blinkered by your own type of photography when discussing gear and I think Matt is a little prone to this. He shoots mainly portraits and when it comes to conclusions and such he is thinking as a portrait photographer (imho). The 75/1.5 is better for his work..

Fred’s reviews and testing give you a clear assessment of how the lens performs across the board. Along with other user’s comments and photos. Simply amazing!

SC v MC. It seems to me that ideally we would have no coatings giving us true tonal / colour reproduction but due to the glass surfaces we need coatings to deal with flare. Some of the old Leica lens I’ve tried were amazing away from the sun.
I shoot only b&w but don’t use sc lenses. For me b&w is about tones but also light and I find light, backlighting and contrast as important as tones. With mc you get more contrast (which is bad) but less flare. It just depends on what’s more important to you. It’s great that Voigtlander offer us these choices, does anyone else?

When I look at reviews on the net, Fred's are the gold standard. The analytical knowledge of a lens and its characteristics you guys (Fred and a bunch of people here) possess is second to none. I do agree that there is a difference between the MC SC, but that just proves to me that he doesn't possess the same level of understanding of a lens make up and how to extract the best from it.

If you look at some of the last reviews on lens, its just Fred's in a different format. None will release their findings till Fred puts his up. They may have the lens up to six weeks before Fred, throw a few click bait pics up saying review coming, then nothing till Fred's review. I find this sheep mentality disappointing. I love reading/watching someone that can articulate their analytical and artistic views on a lens, it gives me inspiration and ideas of how I can use that in my own photography.

The only YouTuber I find refreshing with a great understanding of lens is Generic Photographer, unfortunately as soon as they go full time they seem to lose what made them popular?

Anyway rant over. You guys/girls keep doing what your doing, I get a great deal from it.
Thanks

Totally agree. I love reviews that have plenty of samples and not just unboxing and just going on and on without really a conclusion one way or the other. The other reviews I like is by this German guy Qimago photography (my understanding of German is limited) but again lotta sample images accompany the review.

Bump.

This is a great lens. The longer I use it, the more I enjoy it. I have it coupled with a CV 35/2 Ultron and Contax G21/2.8. Tiny lovely kit. I hope CV puts out a longer 90-100mm f2 lens with some personality while keeping the size small.
