Looking forward to them.

Especially anything you can provide that has the GM1.4 ahead of the GM1.2 in terms of contrast, microcontrast and color.

I love my GM1.2. But if the GM1.4 is ahead in these areas and thus has even more depth/pop than the already good GM1.2, i might switch.

Thank you. Finally I feel I have a quality 50 f1.4 lens that fits the original ethos of the Sony A series cameras of being smaller and lighter. it really is a joy to use.

I just sold my 50GM.. because I have been using my 35GM and 24-70GM II.

Now you have me thinking...

I think the differences in these areas will be slight in real world shooting and the main advantage of the 1.4 is that it is smaller and lighter

100% agree… the major difference to me is the smaller size of the 1.4 vs 1.2.

With such a user name, you should never switch from 1.2 to 1.4 muhahaha

Why all the debate.

One has better bokeh and light gathering. Was regarded as the best 50 ever. It is slightly larger and heavier, but will always remain small and light for a mirrorless 1.2 50mm. The other is a little smaller and lighter.

Technically they are both PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. optically, handling, af. Neither could be any better. Sony is crushing it.

Splitting hairs aside from 1.2 vs 1.4 bokeh, light gathering, and 262 grams. You spread 262 grams of cream cheese on three bagels. Is that really going to weigh your bag down?

As I wait for my 50/1.4 GM to arrive in early May I’m rethinking my travel kit. Even though I have FE 24-70/2.8 GM II I’m currently using a Sigma 16-28/2.8 and 28-70/2.8. DG DN Contemporary pair plus two or three primes. The Sigmas are nice and small and give me f/2.8 but maybe should consider the 20-70/4. For primes I love the 35/1.4 GM and will add in the new 50/1.4 GM. But what about portraits and going wide? I can swap in and take the 14/1.8 or 20/1.8 for wide but what about long? I guess the Sigma 90/2.8 DG DN is interesting. Any other suggestions?

Probably not what you’re looking for, but if you’re already fine carrying those lenses, why not get the 70-200GM II and use that with the 24-70GM II and the 14GM? You can crop the 14 to 21mm easily and be set for anything that comes up. And by the way, that 70-200 GM II is a killer lens.

B&H had this shipping date up for quite a while but I see that they now say shipping will begin April 20th

Far as a lens for portraits I love the Zeiss Batis 85mm, it has OIS and been my main portrait lens for about 3-1/2 years, I got it new on sale for only $898 during a summer sale. It has the same 67mm filter thread as my Tamron 20-40 f2.8, 35 GM and Batis 135. Same for the new 50 f1.4 GM too. Makes it real convenient when traveling, carrying just one set of screw on filters.

But I really like the new Sigma I lenses too and have a few as a smaller kit. Saw the 90 f2.8 was on sale at Adorama and put in an order a few days ago to try as the portrait lens in this kit. I am sure it will be very good, but the Zeiss does have just superb rendering at f1.8, something I will be interested to see how the Sigma 90 at f2.8 stacks up against.

Already own both the 24-70 and 70-200 GM II but for light travel and the A1 had tried to reduce their weight.. had considered just taking 20/1.8 G or 14/1.8 GM, the 24-70/2.8 GM II and 50/1.4.

Used to own the Batis 85/1.8 but sold it when I got the 85/1.4 GM. Maybe I should go back to it. Was a great lens but thought I wanted something faster. My mistake I think.

@swldstn Before I got into Sony in 2018 I was a long time Nikon shooter and used both the Nikkor 58 f1.4 and 85 f1.4 for portraits on my FF Nikon DSLR bodies. Did a lot of outdoor portraits and when shooting 3/4 or less body portraits I always used to close the aperture to f2 or f2.4 to get enough DOF to keep both eyes in focus in case the head was turned a bit. So when I went with Sony I got the FE 85 f1.8 to begin with and never really missed the f1.4 aperture.

The FE 85mm was good, but having also bought the Batis 135mm with OIS to start, I quickly found out how helpful the OIS was with the rather poor IBIS on Sony bodies, I could shoot the 135mm at 1/20 of a second and keep the base IOS at 100 much longer into the golden hour. So I upgraded to the Batis 85 with OIS and found out it had slightly better rendering plus it handled bright background highlights a lot better. Even if the possible new 85GM f1.4 MkII is a 67mm filter thread, I am not interested and will still keep the Batis, as it has proven to be a great lens and all I need.

I think this image shows how well the lens renders OOF areas. Fall off is really lovely and smooth

Though not a fast focusing lens I find the FE 90 macro G works really well for portraiture and has OIS so consequently one of the lenses I traded in to buy the 50 GM was the FE85/1.8

by the way, talked with B&H today and they confirmed that delivery will start closer to April 20th for the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM. Actually have some already in but I think they are waiting for Sony's approval to release them here in they US.

I would be very interested to see the differences between the bokeh of the 50/1.2 versus 50/1.4 at their various apertures. Do you have an opportunity to do this? Or perhaps you have already done so?

Thanks.

Some folks ditched or in the process of ditching the GM f/1.2 for the f/1.4. Now, that Sigma has introduced the 50mm DG DN or even less money, lighter and smaller, I wonder how many will go for the Sigma now ? Just halfway kidding of course but the new Sigma looks intriguing enough to be considered as a combo with the GM f/1.2. One lens for one end of the spectrum being the fastest but less suitable for travel but awesome bokeh while the other is slower but quite a bit smaller and lighter, about perfect for travel. The GM f/14 is neither “meat” or “fish”, so to speak…

I'd say the 50/1.4 GM is both, maybe not as specialized, more allrounder.

Well you can compare the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM to the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary I Series to get a good size and weight comparison that is very similar to the 50mm f1.4 GM to 50mm f1.4 GM to 50mm f2 DG DN we will end up with.
