Google translate needed though.

Thank you for sharing. For me, the GM 50/1.2 still has a slightly smoother rendering based on those two bokeh comparisons, even at the same f/1.4. With that said, the GM 50/1.4 is as good or better than its older GM siblings in all other aspects. If I am in the market for a fast 50, it would be a clearer choice. As the current 50/1.2 shooter, I don't see myself switching however.

It’s no killer. It’s a great OPTION.

Some may prefer more light gathering and the best bokeh possible. Awesome to have a choice.

Sony is crushing it. Next is the 85 1.2 GM! A year later an updated 1.4!

You really think Sony will create both a new 85mm f/1.2 GM and then refresh the 85mm f/1.4 GM II? I can understand if they do this to offer the community two options that’s great but before I buy the f/1.2 or upgrade my existing 85mm f/1.4 GM I want to see what the rumored 100mm f/1.4 GM is. Admit I’m always going back and forth between my 85mm and 135mm and wondering if a single 100mm would work or in reality the 85mm + 135mm is a better combo.

Yes they have to. But it’s gonna be a year. So do what you have to do.

They will be updating all lenses that are 4+ years old. The 85GM is a masterpiece, but it’s due.
Cheers

I had been waiting for an excellent 50mm 1.4 that wasn't to large and heavy ever since switching to Sony, something to replace my Leica M mount Summilux 50/1.4. I had had the FE55/1.8 lens from it's inception and in may ways it is a real classic and is so small and light that it really fits the A series ethos of smaller bodied cameras. This lens has finally fulfilled that need and I sold the FE55 and 2 other not much used lenses and my 1.4 teleconverter to help cover the cost. Optically it really is excellent showing impressive sharpness across the field at 1.4. Balances really well on the A1and I am happy to have an aperture ring on the the lens again. This setup combined with the Leica Q2 make for an impressive and not to large daily setup and for work combines well with the Tamron 35-150 and 16-35GM on 2 Sony bodies to give low light flexibility. I'm one happy camper!!

I took a few photos at the AF minimum focusing distance and the minimum focusing distance for manual focusing. Aperture range from f1.4 to f4.
In the jpeg folder there are comparisons at 100% magnification, in the DNG folder there are downloadable full size photos.

...and i added some DNG pictures from last shooting to the gallery.

well of course it is not 1.2 so can't do that . Mark Galer does a bit of a comparison in his review and his conclusion is 'faster, smaller, lighter and sharper'

The lens is here.Very first tests shows it is bitingly sharp wide open on the A7R4A.At f1.4 it seems to have vivibly less CA compared to my copy of Zeiss ZA Planar 50f1.4 and to be a bit sharper and contrastier compared to 50f1.2 GM at f1.4.

BTW:This is the first time in 5 months when I take up FF camera.I put it off after purchasing Fuji GFX outfit and now with the advent of the GM 50/1.4 took it up again. How small and light it is.How the images lack crispness and clarity of Fuji GFX pictures!

BTW2: I test a replacement copy of GF Fujinon 100-200/5.6 on my GFX 100s along with GM 50/1.4,as it arrived this morning as well. And these are my thoughts while doing this.

My quick comparative RAW test of GM 50/1.4,GM 50/1.2 and Zeiss ZA 50/1.4 is done.In pure technical terms (sharpness, microcontrast,CA level),GM 50/1.4 was the best lens of the three, followed closely by GM 50/1.2 ,with ZA 50/1.4 taking the last place. It is very clearly visible from f1.4 to f2.8,but also at higher aperture values. However in the real life photography and after some PP all these differences will probably not mean much.

Things like individual lens character, bokeh and colour rendition are to be asessed later on.

That's correct. It's mainly a general review, and only a small part is a comparison to the f/1.2 GM.
Viramati wrote:

No, you can't just pick that title of the video as a conclusion of that small f/1.4 GM to f/1.2 GM comparison part. He didn't compare AF at all (and from what I've seen from other reviews I doubt the f/1.4 GM is faster in that regard, and with two times the torque and max speed divided over two groups for the f/1.2 GM it probably simply isn't) and for aperture the f/1.2 is obviously the fastest lens.
What Mark said is the f/1.4 GM is faster than "a" zoom, and that was in the part of the video where he wasn't comparting to the f/1.2 GM. That tells me the descriptor "sharper" in the title might not be a conclusion derived from his comparison part as well, although most reports and reviews I've seen do state the f/1.4 is a little sharper.

It's very nice to have options indeed. I think both 50mm GM options are great lenses, and I could be very happy with the f/1.4 version as well, as a lower weight is always welcome.
At 85mm the Sigma DN gets me over to wait for that f/1.4 GM, as at 85mm f/1.4 is bright enough for me. At 50mm though that f/1.2 is more beneficial in my opinion, as a wider focal length calls for larger aperture to give enough subject separation.

The 50mm f/1.2 GM is said to be actually a little wider than 50mm, more a 47mm or so. Using it in real life it also doesn't feel that much more tight than the 40mm Art. I never did a side by side, but the 50mm f/1.4 Art (DSLR-version) - from my probably flawed memory - felt a bit tighter than the 50mm f/1.2 GM.

How is the actual field of view of the 50mm f/1.4 GM? Is it a "true 50mm", a tad wider or a tad narrower?

All I can compare it too is my Zuiko 50mm f1.4 on my old Olympus OM4tTi and it is wider than that (probably around the 47mm mark) but then I had no idea if that is a true 50mm lens!! setting the Tamron 35-150 to exactly 50mm it gives about the same view with the GM being a tad wider (probably around 49mm) and finally if I set the zoom lens on my little RX100 vii to 50mm it gives a slightly narrower view

You are shooting RAW, I assume? If so, I'd be rather curious to see that difference. Would you provide comparison shots (same light, framing and equivalent aperture)?

Yes,I shoot RAW,but do not expect to see comparison shots. You may however see my real life pictures once I find a bit of free time to go out and take some.

Thank you. Finally I feel I have a quality 50 f1.4 lens that fits the original ethos of the Sony A series cameras of being smaller and lighter. it really is a joy to use.
