More info on the topic:

The school is looking for a 3rd camera. They want to keep it around $1000 with a good sports lens. The 6D and 70-200 2.8 non IS seem to fit the need? I am also going to give the suggestion of a 1Dx with the same lens. Maybe it will be approved by the board if the argument is strong enough for it. I may toss in the suggestion of a 5D mk3 as a middle ground.

I went through the data given to me from here and gave her the below suggestion for gear, if the suggestions provided in post #19 of this thread do not improve results:

The best combo for your budget, ease of use, and not wasting excessive time searching for stuff would be the 6D, and 70-200 F4

The 1Dx will be the best camera for sports, but also the most expensive.

The 5D mark 3 is good for sports, and general purpose, less expensive than the 1dx.

The 6D is good for sports, and general purpose, less expensive than the 5D mark 3.

The lens I recommend is the 70-200 F2.8 NON-IS. These are pretty difficult to find though. A good alternative is the 70-200 F4 version.

I loved my 6D for travel, macro and landscapes but I can't imagine using it for sports. You want something with more peppy FPS and with good tracking in servo mode. For that price range, something like a R10 or R50 would do much better.

I agree, it would be nice to get more fps. I use a 1dxiii and 7d2 for my wildlife/sports with 400 2.8/600f4.

The budget of around $1000 made the decision easier on what to suggest IMO. R10 body on it's own is about $900.

I'd look at 7D2, as well. Not sure how 6D af stacks up, better high iso being FF, but 7D2 is supposed to be excellent for crop.

The R50 lists at $679.99 and has the R3/R7 style AF system in a Rebel sized body. Supposed to ship thismonth.

R50 is available for pre-order on the Canon site, says delivery around 3/16.

The 6D AF tracking and speed will be an issue, go with either the 5D3 or 6Dii if possible instead of the 6D.

The 7D2, as was mentioned, is a good option as well.

The problem with the 5D3 is that they're really not that cheap. A little less than 1Dx, $800 or so depending on the condition, not sure if they're any cheaper on here. R50 you need to add $50-100 for the adapter. The 50/1.8 is a big improvement over her current lenses, but it is going to be hard to improve beyond that if you get one of these bodies unless you can really expand the budget.

I've used 18mp T6 and 24mp SL2 a lot. High iso differences are negligible. Either one you are looking at 6400 not being too hard, mostly, but I try to avoid 12800. So I wouldn't expect massive improvement over the T6 on the R50.

One recent thread mentioned the older 80-200/2.8 was discussed. Interesting lens, not supposed to have as fast af as 70-200/2.8 non IS, might work though. Idk that the 70-200 af is that blazing on older bodies like 5D2 etc, and the 80-200/2.8 used on sports years ago, I'd bet. 7D2 + 70-200/2.8 of some flavor probably the best bet though. And if you loan her your 50/1.8, 1.8 is handy, good people FL
