p.1 #1 · Leica 28mm f/1.4 Summilux missing hood thread ring

Leica never produced a ring to cover the hood threads for the Leica 28mm f/1.4 Summilux. Instead they included a 'filter ring' that offers very little utility.

I recently reached out to Leica regarding this issue and I was informed that they've forwarded it to their product development team. If you're a proud owner of the Leica 28/1.4 Summilux lens and would like to have a hood thread protection ring for when you're not using the hood, I'd encourage you to reach out to Leica and let them know about it. You can send them an email at [email protected].

I'm glad to hear that they took action on a similar issue with the 35/1.4 Summilux Steel Rim's hood. Thanks to the feedback from many photographers, Leica is now replacing the hood to resolve the issue. It's always great to see companies taking their customers' feedback seriously!

Here is what I wrote them in regards to the Leica 28mm f/1.4 Lux's 'missing' ring:

_________

"I hope this message finds you well. I was curious about the absence of a hood thread protection on the Leica 28/1.4 Summilux lens but as Frank confirmed, this part was never produced by Leica. Many photographers, including myself, have received numerous inquiries about this on photography forums.

Given that most Leica lenses have this feature, like the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux and the Leica 21/3.4 SEM, I think it would be a popular addition to the Leica 28/1.4 Summilux. Not only would it provide protection, but it would also streamline the lens and make a lot of photographers happy.

Thank you for your time and consideration."

Lens without the included hood. (exposed outer threads)

I'll email them about this. It was my one annoyance with this lens.

I'm hoping that in the next few years they will make a version II with a pull-out hood and 0.5m MFD.

They didn't have them for the 35 fle or 21 SEM until I showed them that the summarit 75mm v1 thread covers fit. The nice push on caps from the summarit fit too. Glad they made it official though.

I didn't know this. Currently the hood thread ring is included with the Leica 35/1.4 FLE but not with the 21/3.4 SEM. For the latter, you may purchase the spare part if desired. I think it would be great if Leica offered the hood thread ring for their 28/1.4 Lux lens as well, for those who appreciate having that option.

Ironic that the Q/Q2 28 Lux 1.7 gets a trim ring for the hood threads but the actual M 28 Lux does not.

I suppose if using filters a lot I can see the need to remove the hood. (And I do for polarizer use.) But at least for me, I really like the compact rectangular hoods of the 21 SEM, 28 Lux, etc. IMO a pull-out hood would be a step backwards. And for 28mm, how effective would such a shallow hood be? I also like the rectangular hoods because it quickly lets me orient the lens correctly for mounting to the camera. With a totally round lens I have to pay more attention to determining correct orientation.

In any case, it's nice to learn about the 75 Summarit's thread cover ring also working on the 21 SEM.

I would be interested in hearing a response from Leica.
Some of the lenses benefit drastically from lens shade.
The Noctilux 0.95 comes to mind. this lens is actually intended to use without filter.

At least they told me that my inquiry was forwarded it to their product development team. The more we write them, the higher the changes they will do something about it.

In the meantime, where's the FM member who 3D-printed a similar type of ring to cover up the bright chrome lens hood bayonets for Voigtlander lenses? Wouldn't be as slick as a proper anodized aluminum ring from Leica, but might still improve the aesthetics. Not sure though if it's possible to print in a manner that allows it to be threaded onto the lens.

They asked me for the links to this thread and to the one on Leica Forum to forward on, so finger's crossed the product development team puts something into motion.

They have a round pull-out hood on the Safari and Reporter/matte black versions of the 28 Cron. I had the Safari version for a while and didn't notice any issues with flaring. That said, flare control is not always Leica's strength, so the square hoods may be warranted in general.

Both 28/2 cron (v2) and 28/1.4 lux have great flare resistance. The hood works great for protection but it does add some bulk to the lens. The Leica 28/1.4 lux is actually quite compact without the hood.

I'm gonna write them and let them know, it's a major PIA. I use the summarit 2.4 metal lens cap on my FLE, fits perfectly and make's it SO nice while shooting....I need my 28 Lux ring in silver though

Thinking... The Q2 lens is also a 49mm filter thread. I wonder if the external hood thread is the same width as the 28 Lux-M.

Someone with both a Q/Q2 and a 28 Lux, please try your Q2 protector ring on the 28 Lux

The screw on hood for a 28 summilux that screws onto the outside threads of the summilux lens does not fit on to the outside treads of the Q2 so I doubt the Q2 protector ring will work on a 28 summilux as it will probably be too big. The 49mm filter threads are for the inner filter threads , not the outer screw on hood threads.

If the 28/1.4 lux's hood does not fit the Q2 lens, it won't work for sure. Too bad, as this would be a solution.

I tried again, Both have inner filter threads of 49mm but the outer hood threads on the Q2 are greater in diameter with a larger lens barrel than the 28 summilux so it is a no go.

Count me in as someone who would want a finishing ring. I love the square hood (and prefer it to, say, the new built-in hood of the close-focus 35 FLE II), but I would also love the option of not using it and still protecting the threads when not used. The square hood isn't huge but removing it does indeed make the lens feel dramatically smaller. The 28 'lux has the best industrial design of the fast wide angle M lenses in my opinion, and a finishing ring would be the icing on the cake. I'll join in with an email to Leica.

I wanted to point out that there are two separate items we might be referring to - the hood thread ring and the filter ring. The filter ring comes included with the lens, but the hood thread ring isn't even produced by Leica. Just a heads up, there are quite a few of us who are interested in seeing Leica produce the hood thread ring, so hopefully, they'll take that into consideration.
