Given the unlikelihood of Leica manufacturing a hood thread ring specifically for the Leica 28/1.4 Lux lens, I made the decision to modify a dedicated hood that I found at a great price.

Both 28/2 cron (v2) and 28/1.4 lux have great flare resistance. The hood works great for protection but it does add some bulk to the lens. The Leica 28/1.4 lux is actually quite compact without the hood.
I’ve owned the cron for a while and it’s a solid choice if you want a well corrected lens but the IQ and rendering are very similar to the CV 28/2 II Ultron which I also own, so I decided on the Lux. It’s larger but love the way it draws with its super contrast wide open and classic rendering.

Which lens the 28 cron or lux do you like more?

What the lens should have looked like from the beginning.

Absolutely! It would have been ideal if Leica had included this ring with the lens, similar to how they do it for the 35/1.4 Lux and their other lenses. Although the included hood is excellently designed, it does add noticeable bulk to the lens. It's certainly a welcomed option to have now.

This looks great. I just picked up a 28 lux on the B&S boards. Can I ask what hood you used to modify it? I'd like to do something similar. The hood is too big for me to regularly use.

Hey guys, I'll be sharing more pictures soon. Luckily, I found a used OEM hood at a great price and thought of turning it into a ring. This way, the threads and finish will be perfect. However, I'm not sure if it's worth buying a new hood just for this, as it's quite expensive.
I have a machine shop that makes anodised aluminium odds and ends for me very similar to this. Finish quality is excellent. I could possibly cobble a model together in fusion360 and have them fabricate it. Would be ideal if I had a 28 lux for them to measure the exact thread and match the finish though. They usually do these things for about AU$100 a piece for me.

Here are pictures of the Leica 28mm f/1.4 Summilux lens with the custom ring. The ring was designed to fit a modified B+W 49mm UV filter that has been made even thinner.
I also use a Kaiser 49mm front cap for added protection. I've made it snug by adding felt to it.

I'm curious about the reason behind Leica's decision to exclude this ring, especially when it's included with all other Leica lenses that have a similar square hood.
That 50 ‘lux-M Asph. v1 style focus ring is also great! The conventional 28 ‘lux-M at least has the knurling on the ring before and after the zone focus scale, but the design above is even better. The current industrial design on the newest close-focus M lenses (except for the 35 APO) is a step back.
The 28 'Lux, now $7800 new, has a non-recessed, big front element. Leaving 'her' exposed to the vicissitudes of the universe is a brave act, especially for the 'beauty' ring aesthetics. Cowboys. Reminds me of an acquaintance who never wore a helmet riding his Harley. That didn't end well either. But it really needs a hood.

I completely understand your perspective, even though I may not fully agree with the analogy.
Indeed, using a lens hood adds extra protection for any lens. In the case of modifying the 28/1.4 lux's hood to create the outer ring, I ensured to add approximately 1.4mm of extra length. This allowed me to use a modified B+W UV filter that sits flush with the ring. The modified UV filter is also 1.4mm thick. I'm confident that this configuration offers ample protection for the front lens element, eliminating the need for the hood solely for protection. (In the unfortunate event of a catastrophe, the front element on lenses isn't as expensive to replace as many might think.)
Here are some images showing the modified ring before the cosmetic black anodizing step:

Was it easy to separate the ring from the rest of the hood? Is it just glued on? I purchased a “donor” hood on the boards here and plan to do some surgery to it to see if I can cover the threads.
