p.2 #1 · iPad Pro for Trips : Photo dumping and basic editing.

A few months back we visited Croatia - what a spectacular place. Brought along the 12.9 iPad Pro and 2TB Sandisk SSD with a usb-c hub/card reader. As previously mentioned it is doable but inelegant.

I’ll eventually get a MacBook of some sort for a few reasons but image transfer will be a solid advantage over the iPad. I’m just not sure if I want to wait for a touch screen or not.

Steve Jobs will be rolling over in his grave but I think it’s inevitable.

Spent 10 days in France this past October, dumped my photos daily onto my iPad Pro and edited them in Capture One at my convenience. This was the first time I've used my iPad to download and edit photos while traveling, and I will absolutely do it the same way on future trips.

Compared to my wife's Macbook Pro, the iPad Pro was a joy to travel with. The combination of my iPad and pencil is more compact, lighter, and less cumbersome than the Macbook and mouse my wife had with her.

Once I got home, it was easy to transfer the photos to Capture One on my desktop (Windows, not Mac) and do final touchups as needed. Note...a nice thing about Capture One for iPad is I essentially just rented it for the month I was away and let it expire after my trip.

Please understand that it all comes down to personal preference. The iPad with Capture One worked perfect for my needs. My wife, who's a graphic designer, needs her laptop for what she does. I don't think there's one right answer, just know that there are positives and negatives to each approach and you should go with the one you think will work best for you.

To add-on what has previously been mentioned, my 11” iPad Pro 2TB has been gaming changing for my travel photography. If you use lightroom with cloud storage, you don’t need a large capacity storage iPad if you have nightly wifi to allow LR to move pics from your iPad to the cloud. I prefer to keep the originals local on my ipad though along with cloud syncing. There are some apps unavailable on iPadOS, like Topaz.

Thank you - yes I've bought an 11" iPad Pro M1 256GB (the larger memory units are ridiculously priced TBH) with the Apple pencil and I'll pair that with a Sandisk 2TB SSD I have.

I'll have photos in 3 places : SD cards, iPad Pro for photos, not video, and on the SSD. All kept in different locations on my body and in the pack. I don't use anything Adobe and Wi-Fi will be a crawl anyway in the remote Guizhou highlands (and when camping, likely without any internet in the Icelandic Highlands) !

Fingers crossed nothing averse happens during the trip (nothing ever has in the previous 20 years) as far as backing up and storage is concerned).

Thank you everyone for your comments and for posting your experience - it all helped get me over the line

In addition to downloading your images to a device I would recommend taking more SSD cards x size than you will use during the trip and do not erase them. Don't store them with your ipad or camera. If the very worst happens and you are robbed you'll still have everything but the latest part filled card.

Thank you ! Yes I actually bought a couple more cards for exactly that reason today

Though in China + Iceland the chance of being robbed is miniscule (though losing a bag is something I can do - put it down and forget it until much later)! I miss the 'personal safety' of being an expat over here when I travel back to Europe & the UK.

Let us know how the setup works for you. I tried traveling with only an Ipad a few years ago but the difficulty of moving images from my cards to my hard disk was too difficult for ease of use. I understand things have much improved and I may try again. I have an older 11" Pro (before M1) with 256. I may try the double transfer technique when I have some time. However a single transfer is much more appealing (SD card through the Ipad to SSD va a hub. Hopefully someone will perfect a solution for this,

Some people use one of those battery-powered standalone hard discs or ssds that comes with a card reader built in (I have one from Western Digital); you pop the card into it and it transfers the files for you to the drive, and the unit has a built-in wifi hotspot so you can connect to it wirelessly for editing; with the newer USB-C iPads including the Air and the Pro you can probably connect it directly to the iPad for editing, which would be faster than wifi.

Please do keep us updated. I have a 12.9 inch iPad Pro and a 2TB ssd in a USB-C enclosure. My (gaming) laptop is quite heavy and would rather not bring it if possible. Are there any opinions on Lightroom vs. Capture One on iPad?

I haven’t tried Lightroom or Capture One, but I have experimented with different iPad options for camera download to SSD. The newer iPad Pros with USB-C ports work better than the old ones with Lightning ports. You can get the job done with either but with the USB-C iPad you can use a hub (I use an Anker) to connect the camera and SSD at the same time and copy directly from camera or SD card to iPad or SSD very easily. Using the legacy iPad you can only connect one device at a time so you need to stage files on iPad in batches.

Whichever way you go, use Cascable software. It works far better than Canon’s software. I bought the perpetual license instead of subscription to make sure it won’t fail trying to check its license while I’m off the grid.

Ok I looked this up and they seem to have a program to help you impo rt images into a MAc but I don't see the same for an iPad. What software are you referring to that would assists in downloading photos to an external drive connected to an iPad?

https://cascable.se/

It’s the version for ios. If you buy for a given Apple ID, you can run on all iOS devices using that id. So buy once and use on phone and-or iPad.

Also whichever iPad you use, power is an issue. You will need to plug a power feed into the usbc hub for the iPad Pro or the “camera adapter” if using the legacy iPad. Make sure the usbc hub has two female usbc sockets: one for power, one for whatever you want to connect such as camera or SSD, male usb-c goes to iPad. Anker hub is good, some cheap hubs not good in this regard.

Thanks will try it and see if the transfer process is streamlined enough. Primarily looking to transfer files from SD cards (or the camera) to an external SSD for backup and access from the iPad.

Actually you can just use a card reader. This even works on my iPhone 11 Max Pro. Just plus in the card reader and open the Files app on the phone to read and view your images.

Not when camping and there are long hours of darkness! I love to sort out my images and send a couple to family or post on IG.

This is really good to know, thanks for this recommendation.

I subscribed to the iPad version of Capture One for a while, but one day when I tried to open it the app said it couldn't find a valid subscription so it opened it in demo mode (even though my subscription was fully paid up). I thought, "okay, that's a dealbreaker, I don't want that happening at a crucial moment," and I deleted the app and cancelled my subscription. What I didn't realize was that deleting the app also deleted all the photos I had imported with it. Gone forever. Fortunately I had already transferred the keepers to my computer but still...

True enought, I too have had some success with that. Though sometimes the card reader will want more power than your iPad or iPhone will want to provide and this manifests as unreliable behavior. I had to test several times to realize that the power issue manifests not as 100% failure, but as lack of reliable function. Test it at home and it works fine, then it fails when you need it. After some testing I decided that the safe path is to have a way to provide power to the USB system, whether with the classic iPad or with the newer USB-C models.

The Anker hub I have doubles as an SDXC card reader too.

Too many compromises. I'd get a MacBook Air and not worry about all the workarounds you need to use an iPad in comparison. I've been to 55 countries with my MBA, as good as iPads are now, I still won't move to one. It's a PITA to do the simplest of tasks - move files. For me its MBA or just take more cards.

Cheers

Chris
