You cannot roll a Sony camera back to older firmware.
Can you roll other brands back to earlier firmware versions? Interesting if so.
Going to feel like the the longest February ever I think.
So here we are February 2nd... tick-tock ...I can do this...
I returned the A7rV in favor of my A1 as the A1 turns out to be my preferred Sony-ride going forward and I really don't need the A7rV to pair with the A1. I've owned all the Sony A7"r" cameras since the very beginning and the A7rV will probably be my last Sony "r" camera as I just prefer the overall faster operational A1 capabilities. The A7rV however, is an excellent upgrade from the A7rIV IMO. so I am positive many will very much enjoy their A7rV cameras. That rear screen flip/rotate capability is excellent IMO.
I don't need A7rV AF AI to nail fast moving targets with the A1 or huge targets like a car, plane, train etc. ha ha, at least not yet .But the new Sony AF AI on the A7rV does have an edge that will probably only get better and better but again the A1 AF as-is, does it for me. And there is no special AI AF chip in the Sony A1 that I know of...so not sure how much better AF can be on the A1 outside of the normal tweaks that seems to come with typical firmware updates.
Some notables on social media now openly scolding Sony for letting the A1 and other Sony models firmware lag behind less expensive but newer models in various latest greatest features, I'm thinking I would be surprised if Sony comes with the typical "performance enhancements" "bug fixes" -only for the next A1, but on the other hand, wondering how much of these new firmware-based features Sony can add to the A1 firmware while maintaining what makes the A1 special and this is my unusual for me heightened, interest in the next A1 firmware....
BTW at least A1 files have access to the new Imaging Edge movement compensation feature for Pixel Shift images announced when the A7rV was released--this makes a big difference from what I see in my Pixel Shift images with some often unavoidable movement in the frame.
I think I heard on some interview video, a French Sony product manager said something like there are over or about 300 engineers working on Sony camera firmware aka no simple task ? Or did I dream that ?
So there is zero follow-up by SonyAlphRumors and others. Did the get it wrong and why or was it simply click-bait to stur the pot and create website traffic?
While I know Sony is probably busy working on their next models i personally think getting out this kind of update would have provide Sony with a barrier to further price erosion and some increase volume sold. It also would help how the user community recommend them to others. All intangible value but it can provide real benefits. Look at all the lost YouTube opportunities and influencers will miss this opportunity.
It will either come to pass....or it won't...maybe in February....maybe later. I don't think anyone can answer your first question.
If/when Sony releases another firmware update for the a1, I imagine that question will be answered.

There are another 26 days left in the month, so hang tight! And SAR rarely follows up on its rumors AFAIK. Its strategy seems to be to just throw stuff out and see what sticks.
Welp - when first getting into Sony I paid the premium for an A9II over the A9 thinking a big firmware update might eventually be released. At least a better chance of getting one vs. the A9. Oops.
Lesson learned.
I love the A1 as is. If it gets an upgrade - sweet. If not - still the best overall camera I’ve ever had.

So for clarity want to make sure I don’t leave an impression that the A1 is not a great camera or that it needs a firmware update. Sure it would be nice to have some enhanced things but I use my two just as they are with the latest available firmware. Also don’t believe Sony owes me updates as long as it works as originally specified.
This was more about seeing the Alpha 1’s users being manipulated and being click-baited and just a rant about this topic. Thank you.
