p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Studio Shoot with Temple

Temple is a model who I really enjoy working with. He and I have done two location shoots before this, and he always brings great creative energy and a good attitude. A couple weeks ago we did a shoot in studio for a change and once again he proved to be a fantastic model.

One of my lenses (a relatively cheap 135mm) tends to render a soft glow with back lighting more than other lenses I've used. Sometimes it looks really great for some photos, but not always in others. In this shoot I feel kind of "meh" about it, so I'm thinking I'll start looking for something close to that range that doesn't render that way.

Canon 5D MKIII, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens and a Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 Soft Focus lens with soft focus disabled.

Proof that I also photograph models while they're smiling... Sometimes.

I was envisioning black and white photos since we started planning the shoot, but I did one color edit so far.

Love it!! The thing I hate about your series on a consistent basis is that I always like to say which shot is my fave, or maybe which couple or whatever. But how do you single any out from this group? That smile, in the second to last one, tho... geesh. What a great smile! Voted.

I recognize Temple from a previous post Daniel. No body fat on this athletic gentleman!
I also like him smiling!
Your work is most excellent!

Great set.

Can you be specific on the lighting (distances, modifier / brand / size etc).

And that backdrop is really nice. Which one?

Thank you so much Ron. I take that as very high praise coming from such a talented photographer as you.

Thank you Dan!
Temple made a point to take the few weeks ahead of this shoot to really get his body ready for it, and I’d say it really paid off.

Thanks.

I used a single neewer S101-400 with a 24" octa for the darker shots, and two Neewer S101-400's for the shots with the white background, with the 24" octa as the main light and a 47" octa for the second light, which I used as the white background. I don't measure the placement distances, sorry.

You've got a nice shadow definition with those softboxes.

The backdrop - do you know which one you're using? (I'm still in a search for a really great backdrop that doesn't have any major distinuishing marks but has a good texture and colour.)

I'm curious, on No. 10, the headshot just before the smile, did you guide him to do the "squinch" or was that natural for him? He pulled it off completely, not everyone can. Just curious if that is part of your thing, telling them to do the squinch.

Sometimes I direct more inexperienced models to sqinch a little bit, but Temple is very experienced and good at emoting, so he didn’t need much direction at all from me, which lets me focus better on the technique and detail. A skilled, experienced model makes a world of difference for a shoot like this and Temple just doesn’t disappoint.

Very nice set!

My only critique is a personal dislike for the white background on some of the portraits, mostly #4 and #5.
