Ended up returning my SR reissue after all, mainly for the stiff focusing (though I was still annoyed by the focus shift). I bought it from Leica USA's online site, and they're a "we'll see if it really has the problem(s) you say it does when we get it back," kind of a store. So we'll see. I half expect them to send me a video clip of a gorilla moving the focusing tab around effortlessly then returning it to me with a note that says, "It's just fine!"

I think I will replace it initially with the CV 35 1.4

Since the only rangefinder I have is the new M6, I couldn't vouch for the rangefinder focusing calibration (no time to shoot and develop a bunch of film during Leica's limited return window). Since Fred's first copy had stiff focusing like mine but also wasn't hitting exact focus with the rangefinder, I was worried mine might be the same way.

But if Leica tells me there's nothing wrong with it and sends it back, then yeah, it may just appear on the forum for sale

Did you send it to Leica for repair or did you simply return your copy? If you chose the former, be prepared for a lengthy service time. In my case, it took 4 months and Leica eventually sent me a brand new lens.

Leica is redesigning the ventilated hood to eliminate vignetting when using filters. Meanwhile, you can consider purchasing a metal hood from eBay (link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264632460681) for $7. When needed, I personally use it with regular ND filter and have not experienced any vignetting issues.

Here is how it looks on the lens:

This Rainbow Imaging hood is certainly low-profile. Thanks for posting this evil-bay link.

As for whether to buy a re-issued Steel Rim lens, that is still a “maybe.” I very nearly bought one, when Leica USA had some in stock, recently. I was willing to tolerate the hood situation, and just about ready to risk the other user-reported problems.

Just as well I did not, because the home behind us was demolished, and with it, the tall privacy fence, leaving only a chain link fence too low to contain out larger dogs, and even that chain link fabric was damaged. I learned that both fences had actually been erected by the former owner of the property behind us, so we did not suffer a “loss,” as the new owner, a developer, was actually free to demolish both fences. I spent ~$1K on fence panels, to erect an emergency fence, and will probably spend several hundred more, this week. (We have a pool, so, MUST have adequate fencing. Then, our refrigerator just stopped adequately cooling. And, to validate the superstation that things happen in threes, our aging roof suddenly developed two new issues. A credit card, that had a balance of zero, now has a considerable balance. Such is life. I reckon that this “is a sign,” as my deeply religious mother would say.

Lens additions, whether re-issued Steel Rim, a locally-available pre-ASPH, or Nokton 35mm f/1.4 VM, should wait.

There was no way I was going to wait for a repair based on your and Huss's recent experiences on wait time. I'm just returning it.

This morning I decided I'd try to get a German v2 pre asph lux instead of the reissue and now just got a ship notice from Adorama.

Hah. Yeah, well my v2 was completely different than his – just as contrasty as the reissue after it had a CLA. I think most people in love with vintage lenses are also partly in love with the effects of haze.

Thank you. I didn't think to look into a hood with a low profile. The original problem is after all a thick filter in use with the supplied hood that becomes too long.

Edit: ah they don't ship to Canada. Any other slim vented hood options? I tried looking at BH Photo.

I also tried this one and it works great. Perhaps they ship to Canada. Make sure to select the "46mm" version:

My copy arrived. Build date 4/24/23.

Love the size. Well calibrated to the range finder (only checked wide open) and so is infinity at the hard stop. Focus ring is a little stiff, but several brand new Leica lenses I've had were also stiff including the 35 FLE II. You can hear the infinity lock starting to engage as you get very close to infinity. Aperture ring does in fact feel cheaper than it should. The aperture ring on the lux BC for example is substantially nicer feeling.

I have a 35 lux pre asph v2 Canada version coming tomorrow. Curious to compare them.

Wow, you are getting some serious gear!
I may be in the minority, but I appreciate the aperture ring on this lens. It has a firm and distinct clicking mechanism, which prevents accidental adjustments.

Haha yes been on a little kick lately. These type of lenses are much more exciting for me than the typical latest and greatest.

Yes, once we have experienced the perfection of modern lenses, we start to appreciate the flaws in classic ones.

BTW, the M10-R Black Paint is beautiful!

My copy of the v2 arrived. Unfortunately it has a large piece of dust inside that can even be seen from f/5.6 on. Deciding whether to return it or CLA it.

And I was wrong about the aperture ring on the reissue. I wasn't aware the original aperture ring is basically the exact same way. So I think that was a creative decision that they made. Operating the aperture ring on the v2 pre asph and the reissue feels identical.

The focus ring however feels substantially smoother on the v2, but could very well just be the v2 is broken in. I do personally like the lack of the infinity lock.

A few quick [bad] snapshots since it's raining outside. Same shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and WB (5000k). Lens corrections off.

The v2 vignettes more, so I had to lower the exposure on the reissue file on the first set in LR. The second set I lowered exposure on the reissue in camera to better match the v2.

The colors of the v2 appear to be a slightly more muted and run slightly cooler.

Thanks for the side by side samples!

The recently reissued version offered a similar aesthetic, although with slightly increased contrast. (you can see that difference in your samples). I think It shares more similarities with the latest German version due to their upgraded coating. Interestingly, despite its age, your "pre-asph" copy appears to have clear glass. Some pre-asph versions I have tried in the past had a more "dreamy" appearance, possibly due to internal haze.
