...
Remember this are straight our of cameras jpegs, however, so I wonder if there is some correction baked in. Perhaps not, but I suppose that could be done if Sony wanted.

Mmh, at first I thought the same, but without contacts, there can't be any correction in a Sony Body!

Can't imagine Sony applying lens corrections to an unknown lens without any electrical contacts. The exif data seems to concur the camera hasn't got a clue what's attached to it. f/>1024 for aperture value.

Perhaps Lateral CA correction but not vignetting and distortion.

I don't know. It might not be lens based but if there is consistently less illumination in the outer part of the frame, then that could I suppose be corrected automatically. Distortion would need to be lens based, but I am not sure vignetting has to be.

Hmm, vignetting seems very heavy to me.

But I am wondering how it would behave on a Leica M, not a Sony that has to use an adapter.

I agree, better than the 35/1.2 VIII.
Guess I'll order (when I can).

I always keep the Lens Shading Comp. setting off on my Sony cameras, whereas I keep the other 2 settings (CA Comp. and Distortion Comp.) set at auto. The Shading Comp. setting would affect the Raw files in a way that can't be easily reversed in post so that's why I never use it + I like some level of natural vignetting. I'm not sure if CA Comp. does anything with non-native lenses but Distortion Comp. at least would require Exif data to be able to do something.

I used these same settings when I took the samples so the camera should not have done any vignetting compensation. Generally my A7C has much less vignetting than my Sigma fp though. Sigma also tends to have noticeable Color shading with adapted rangefinder WA lenses (it has a clever compensation method for it but it requires manually creating and using lens profiles in-camera).

There was definitely some vignetting wide open with the CV 35/1.5 on my A7C but I think it was less than with 28/2 II and it didn't really jump out as being excessive to me. Didn't seem so different to level of vignetting with the 3 native E-mount CV 35mm lenses to me.

The A7C, A7SII/A7SIII, A74, A7R2-5 should all have the minimum of vignetting thanks to BSI sensors. M cameras before the M11 will have slightly more vignetting.

A couple of quick smartphone pics showing the lens on my A7C. The adapter adds a bit to the length of course. It's slightly longer than I was expecting but usability is perfect.

Thank you so much for this Juha! How does the lens look front-on?

Great photos as usual Juha! Thanks so much for posting these. The lens looks better than I expected and hits all the right notes. I'll be using it on a M10M and now have no excuse to get the new Leica 35 Summilux FLE ii. .
Like that will stop me.
The variety of very good photos does it - the lens - and you justice.
Thanks again.

That's what I'm seeing as well. I'm happy to see that vignetting does not seem worse compared to the CV 28/2 II's.

I'm seeing a little field curvature on the shot with the Tapir sculpture.
Great central and corner sharpness at (what I assume is) wide open on the shot of the tree with dead leaves in front of the buildings.
Little bit of axial CA annoyingly but not much purple fringing. No appreciable lateral CA (would be totally correctable).
Great variety of shots and I am a fan of the rendering - sharp plane of focus, quick transition and smooth defocused areas. Certain distances look like they could generate some busy bokeh in challenging conditions but not many fast 35's can avoid that.
Distortion appears inoffensive.
Nice sunstars

I think it looks very good for the most part. Sharpness at near distances is good, as is background rendering with not too much swirl induced by optical vignetting. LoCA isn't significantly noticeable, though there are signs of bokeh fringing. Infinity at f/5.6 on the Sony stack also looks really good with maybe only the deep corners showing some slight signs of nervousness.

Areas I'm curious about include the strange crescent shaped wide open background bokeh at farther subject distances (various tree portraits). Foreground rendering also appears to have harder edged blur discs. And at farther focusing distances there's noticeable decrease in background blur towards the edges, though this is quite common with other 35mm rangefinder lenses due to vignetting. Very interested to see how this lens holds up on Leica M in comparison, particularly off-axis focus transition character.

Perhaps here, the field curvature is evident:
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOV8PQo8lQZHXKe0AP1mgbJRYAdvJfz96VgpWbojoD43STZ698pDY6ZdFCm4k9h7A/photo/AF1QipMi-yDKlbNiSOb2OyOBEFCV6GkO75BlvMJhjK2p?key=R3IwdkFXQm5nRXVPaEFIX1Z0clBtMk4ydHAtbzhn

Of course this curvature may not be present on M bodies.

I also see SA when shooting at close distance wide open...to be expected from the optical design.

There is some slight SA at near distances, but I actually think the lens looks sharper with better contrast at nearer distances than farther (when wide open). For example images 9285 and 9292 (bush branches/leaves) at near distances compared to the mid distance Tapir sculpture (9275) and the farther distance tree (9228). The tree stopped down looks technically much better (9226).

If this is the case, it could be a logical choice by Cosina for this focal length where wide open shooting will usually be people/objects at nearer distances.

I'm also wondering if there's a mid zone dip or wavy field curvature wide open, but difficult to tell from the samples. Stopped down to f/5.6 does look quite good across the frame. Again, curious how the lens compares on Leica.

Here are some screen grabs:

Tree images 9228 (wide open) and 9226 (stopped down). Center crop:

Same but rule of thirds crop. Notice the strange wide open rendering. I saw similar background blur in quite a few of the wide open images when focused at farther distances.

9285 and 9292 roughly center crops:

Sure, some SA but IMO quite good for this distance considering the 35/1.2 is very weak at these distances, IIRC.

Overall and given how small & light this lens is, it looks like a winner! I‘ll definitely get one- had the 35mm f1.7 once, but disliked the ergonomics too much.

by observing the samples so far, this lens could be one of the few WA lenses that can perform well on both Leica M and Sony stock cameras. Very intriguing!

Thanks! You mean from the front? I took a couple of more pics, also including a couple of size comparison shots showing 28/2 II, 50/1.5 Nokton II, 90/2.8 VM next to this 35/1.5. 35/1.5 and 50/1.5 look very similar in length and overall volume and the length of 28/2 II is almost identical to 35/1.5 as well.

I do wish the 90 didn't have rangefinder cam issues cos it looks like a great lens 😞

It looks like the distortion is very well controlled, just a little pincushion, barely noticeable in the test shots. Impressive and thanks!
