Maybe its just me. Why would anyone buy this 1200 that is a 600 with an extender welded on for $19,999 when they can buy the 600 and the extender for $13,598? I look forward to seeing image comparisons if I am wrong.

So many thoughts...
I bet if you wait for the holidays, you could get $100-$200 off.
The funny thing is that I don't think they would sell many of these at $2,000 little alone $20,000.
There is a different way of looking at it though. Since no-one will buy this thing, it will become rare. A collector may be able to sell it for a lot more in the future.
Meanwhile, I will wait for the R1, 35mm and 135mm lenses. This was an odd lens to release before having a fairly complete set of lenses.

I don't think it'll surprise anyone to say I can't afford one but it's almost like they sell more if it's more expensive. Certainly no one seems to be interested in a budget-friendly, extremely light Rebel kit. You can get the kit trinity + 24mp rebel under $1k. Nobody cares. Irritating.
It is a compelling lens at 7.3 lbs. F/8 isn't too bad on even remotely modern sensors. 1600+ isn't really a problem the vast majority of the time. 6400 pretty usable even on 18mp aps and that came out in 2009 or so.
The MTF for 1.4 & 2x tc's looks really good to me. It doesn't exist in EF so it makes sense because it can't be adapted

If you own a 600 and this release has triggered buyer's remorse, Canon are offering a service for $6,400 where you can send them your 600 and your extender and they will weld them together. If you later change your mind (perhaps there's a bird perched a bit closer than you expected), the express unwelding service is only $3,200.

Ha! I only wish I was serious Jim.
If I were to dole out $40,000 on a couple lenses I wouldn't need to worry about a divorce because she would probably just toss my dead body out of the car and into a ditch along a secluded back country road.
I was however, shocked to see the ones they had in stock sold-out that quickly. I wouldn't have thought there were more then a handful of agencies or wealthy individuals that would want such a specialized lens.
