I saw this on Leica Rumors:
https://leicarumors.com/2022/09/10/voigtlander-heliar-classic-50mm-f-1-5-vm-50th-anniversary-red-limited-edition-lens-listed-for-sale-on-ebay.aspx/

It's a polarizing lens because it's full of character. I own one and had no idea Voigtlander releases anniversary editions.
Here is the review: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1719880

Looks grey to me. Then again, I am colour blind.

With a regular black plastic lens cap? Oof.

CV needs to make non-limited olive/safari editions for all markets.

To me a grey version would trump the lipstick red. Ewww.

Obviously not a lens for people who tape over the red dot on their cameras.

Maybe it's exactly the lense for those people, as the curious eye will be drawn to the red hot lens instead!

This is the lens you use as a participant in Pamplona.

Honestly I love the black paint finish on the original version.

Leica Safari color would make more sense to me. I remember seeing a special edition "dark blue" Voigtlander 50/1.2 Nokton.

Not really for somebody who tries to shoot inconspicuously....but then, most of these kind of collector lenses won't be seen outside of a display cabinet or safety box anyway.

This is a limited edition of 50 units that were sold at the beginning of last week's I.C.S. Camera Fair at Matsuya Ginza (by lottery among interested buyers) at the same price as the regular version. It's a kind of collectable. A couple of years ago there was a navy blue version of 50/1.2 VM sold at the same event (again 50 units only).

There have been other limited edition CV lenses sold in these I.C.S. fairs in past years too but earlier on they had just had some limited edition print text on the lens and only these 2 lenses have been sold as unique color editions.

These particular anniversaries are typically related to I.C.S. or Matsuya Ginza and not to Cosina or Voigtländer itself and they seem to be continuing this tradition of limited edition lenses for the event over many years now. Back when the navy blue edition 50/1.2 VM was offered, it was not on lottery basis and there was a big rush. I tried to get one but missed out by a hair. This time I didn't try as I have the regular version of the 50/1.5 Heliar classic and wasn't too drawn to the red color version. I like the lens a lot though.

Definitely not a street lens, but a nice collector's item. A deep rich maroon would be better, as would a subtle blue, like British Standard Midnight Blue, with white lettering.

Oh, you got one, nice! I've not seen those in 2nd hand market much. Immediately after release there was one in Yahoo Japan Auctions for 2x original price but after that I haven't spotted any. I hope you got it at a decent price. That one was for 150th anniversary of founding of Matsuya (not the Ginza store but the originall business that was founded in 1869: http://www2.matsuya.com/co/english/enkaku/).

I.C.S. stands for "Imported Camera Society". It was some group of Camera stores who set up to work together for Camera importing business to Japan from 1972. Now the group includes 14 camera stores that get together to arrange the "World Used Camera market", i.e. I.C.S. Camera Fair. It's nowadays organized twice a year at Matsuya Ginza department store. Many of those camera stores sell Leica and various rangefinder cameras and lenses as well as other old cameras / lenses that still have demand. Those fairs are good for hunting for various older rangefinder lenses that might be hard to find normally. Each store tries to bring their most exciting items to the fair and on the first day there are typically lots of collectors shopping around. Used to be many visitors from China etc. too before the pandemic stopped the traveling.

http://ics1972.jp/english.html
http://ics1972.jp/about_ics.html

I tried to find what other special edition items CV has had on those fairs. There was at least a 40/1.2 VM and 35/1.4 classic in earlier years without special coloring.

2018: https://www.japancamerahunter.com/2021/03/camera-geekery-voigtlander-nokton-40mm-f1-2-40-jahre/
"This version of the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm F1.2 Aspherical sports a black paint barrel, a nickel filter ring, and of course the special 40 Jahre engraving." It was "ICS x MG 40th anniversary lens". MG must be Matsuya Ginza. I.C.S. is 50 years now, so not sure what the 40th anniversary was in 2018. Matsuya Ginza was originally established in 1925.

This is I.C.S edition of 35/1.4 classic VM:
https://www.mapcamera.com/item/3717011340533
It was "30th anniversary" I.C.S. edition, but not sure when... Surely not 20 years ago as the regular lens came out in 2008.
"The brass barrel has a black paint finish, and the lens front frame and mount are nickel-plated.
Due to this specification change, it will be 240 grams, which is 40 grams heavier than the normal model.
This is a very rare lens with a limited production of 100 pieces."

Also they seemed to have had some limited edition Bessa bodies on I.C.S. fair already in 2003.
https://www.cameraquest.com/voigt_r2s_r2c.htm
"For collectors, so far the rarest R2S and R2C are the 25 olive bodies made for the Tokyo Used Camera Show (2/26-3/3/2003) and engraved ICS for the Imported Camera Society."

Thanks for the info Juha!!
The CV 40/1.2 Special Edition has the ICS marking but not the 35/1.4 Nokton. I don't see any special markings on the latter.

I just bought the "blue" from here:

Yeah. Voigtlander has a history of making limited edition lenses for ICS.

I was in Japan for business during the last ICS fair (it was my last day) and got one as well. Probably the only copy currently in North America.

It was kinda a lottery system for the spots to enter on the first day. You scanned a QR code to get in Q, and when it was time, it'd tell you your place in line, and there were markings on the floor with numbers that you'd go to your spot.

Then they started asking from No.1 if they wanted to buy the lens. A voucher was given to anyone who said yes, and the voucher would guarantee a lens until noon.

Sorry for the dust. Air quality has been particularly bad in YVR the last few days.

Yes, the 35/1.4 Nokton doesn't seem to have any unique engravings. It just had a sticker on the box indicating I.C.S. 30 Year Anniversary special edition. I guess the main difference point is that it's black painted brass and heavier than the regular edition. Map Camera buys those 2nd hand at 131300 JPY so it seems to have a good resale value as the regular version is much cheaper than that.

You got the blue one at a pretty nice price

I found another I.C.S. special edition from 2016:
http://ics1972.jp/archives/matsuya/2016/index.html

Looks like there were Nikon S-mount versions of current VM Heliar 50/3.5 (15 units) as well as ZM Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5 (10 units) that time, along with CV adapters to use those in E-mount cameras.

Forget the red Heliar, you should ask azenis what other rare optical gems he has on his shelf. You will not be disappointed!

That's a big difference, thanks for pointing it out. I would love to have a black painted on brass 35/1.4 Nokton.

There is a silver version as well (probably brass as well)
