I finally got one, and so far, so good. Like the MFD on both ends, very practical, it's smaller than I expected and it's constant f2.8. Sharpness feels good, probably above the 16-35za, but that's not a very high bar to start with
big fan of the range as I own the m43 10-25 f1.7 and for certain, this thing has better bokeh than that lens. I'm not concerned at all, here is one at 20 and one at 40

Here’s my attempt to answer a few questions. First, comparing before/after lens correction in Lightroom CC. Second, detail that can be pulled from a high resolution sensor - A7R4A
Edit: no editing or sharpening on the first four images, light editing and sharpening on the last two.

I’m also not sure how to get a true 100% crop from LRCC on my iPad. It might be magnified a bit too much to draw hard conclusions. it’s the best I can do over morning coffee.
I’ll bring the tripod with me tomorrow. I know it’s valuable to see these things when trying to decide if you want to spend $ on a lens.

Seriously even at 1/80s you're getting movement. Always when testing be on a tripod and focus manually at magnification . I test a lot and it's hard to draw conclusions if the test is a question mark. Don't take that the wrong way its just a learning curve

I've only watch a couple of video reviews on this lens. Dustin Abbott, Julie Trotti and Gerald Undone. Dustin found the Tamron to be sharper than the sony 20mm f1.8. Gerald found the opposite if I heard his review correctly. Distortion was a concern for Gerald. But not Dustin?
Anyway, looking for a wide angle, sharp and light lens for landscapes, etc. on the A7IV. May wait to see if Tamron updates the 17-28 with a G2 version....maybe!

Im in a mental debate. So I have the PZ 16-35 now and really like it on my A7c but I just got a Sony 20 1.8 from a friend for free but I really need like a zoom that goes to like 40 or 50 for some event work and having a 2.8 would be helpful. I have some options here sell both lenses get a 24-70/28-70 something. Trying to keep this under the 1k mark. Thought about this 20-40 and maybe grab a CV 15 again or keep the 20mm buy a 28-70 but im missing the super wide . Keep the 16-35 and sell the 20mm and get a Sigma 45/65 maybe
I have till Xmas to figure this out but One I have not been paying attention much to this , I have one foot maybe even both out the door of being a working Pro and frankly just don't want to spend a lot given im half out the door. Bottom line I made a long career out of this but IM DONE if you get my meaning. Sure I'll take a check from anyone but im not even looking for work. I have the A1 and I still need that unless the A7RV can take its place But need some answers on that cam first

Opposing reviews right! I really find it hard to believe it's sharper than the Sony 20G.
Maybe this lens has bad QC in production and copy variance.

I can't offer you any scientific tests because I have no interest in shooting test charts, but from a practical standpoint I'm not seeing any real sharpness difference between this lens and my Sony f/1.8 primes (35mm, 55mm, 85mm). I'd expect the primes to edge it out at 2.8 in a controlled test, but there is not enough for me to notice that I would choose to shoot one of the primes for the sake of more sharpness. The primes will stay for low light shooting (often) or if I really need faster AF (rarely).
It's probably worth pointing out that I'm still shooting a 24mp camera, and to quote a photographer that I deeply respect when discussing our photos: "Who cares if it's sharp?"

Seems like a no brainer...
Sell the 20 (too limiting). Sell the 16-35 PZ (too slow). The 24-70 GM II is great... I have one too, on my A1. It's too bulky to be used on the A7C.
Buy the 20-40.
My choices are right in line with yours... I have my 16-35 PZ on my A7C too. Great combo size wise.
I wanted to keep the same size profile... but to get 2.8 and have it be cheaper than PZ... for me it was an easy decision. My 16-35 PZ is listed.

This is a beauty, and so true

For landscape and architecture, f4 isn't "too slow". I don't know why so many people have this belief that having f2.8 is so important.
Because a lot of us will use the 20-40 as a general walkaround lens.
I will use it as standard lens... that happens to go to 20 if I want it to.

The A7c sensor is actually much better in low light than the Riv, iv or even the A9 for example. So even though I like fast glass. The 2.8 has been a non issue so far. The advantage of one lens 20-40 trumps it for me. In the future I would prefer a higher MP A7cii but with that will cause a bump in noise sooner as well. No free lunches unfortunately.
