p.1 #1 · QD alternative to spider/peak design belt style holders?
Recent posts here have made me wonder about better ways to carry two bodies when needed as I currently use Peak Design slings via their system and/or a QD connected to my Kirk/RRS L plates. The QD is awesome and much faster to disconnect. I have each on its own sling across my body in an X so that can get awkward at times.
This had me wondering if I could mimic the Spider/PD belt type holders with a simple 1.25" belt and a Magpul QDM sling mount. The sling mount has a 1.25" opening so can thread a belt through it and has a easier to access release for the QD.
Total cost for the system would be about $55 if you already have the belt and plates.

Not sure I understand this completely, but wouldn’t using this sling mount on a belt essentially turn out to be a very short strap that dangles from your belt? If not, I’d want to hear more details about what you have in mind.
Can’t beat the Spider holster system for being quick on the draw — it’s the only system I know that works one-handed (without complicated finger motions). The price of this convenience (beyond the financial one) is a chunky metal thingy that sticks out of the bottom of your camera or lens.

If I'm imagining this correctly, the QD mount gets threaded to any belt and ends up just being the QD male end. Take camera and insert male end to female on a Kirk/RRS plate on body or lens foot and...that's it. It can rotate freely.
Similar to the Spider system but not a drop-in like they have. Also no chunky metal involved.

Someone who's had more (= any) experience with QD should chime in here, because you're going know better than I do about this. From my understanding though this will need to be a two-handed operation: one hand on the camera and the other to direct the QD leash or swivel. And everything would be riding on the attachment method of the QD leash to the belt. Not sure how well that tiny swivel would bear the weight and stress of camera motion over time.

the QD system was originally designed for single point weapons sling type carry that allows freedom of access and fire movement or as a 2 point in more relaxed situations with your weapon that supports it. it is technically a 2 handed operation to remove. it really does not work as a belt clip based system. it is designed to be secure on in use unless you really want to remove it. i have a few variations but they all essentially work the same.
that "tiny swivel" (the steel one black if its a real military spec one) as you refer to it, depending on which one you get can and does hold in excess of 300lbs. 2 of mine are tested to 800lbs which are forged 7075 T6 Al alloy. this essentially means that you better hope something else breaks on the strap before parts of you do. i'm using over 5+ years now. i don't even think twice. but, like any relatively thoughtful individual when installing on to your camera/lens plate you do a good "tug test" to ensure proper install/lock.
one other little thing, remember what's really holding everything on to your camera base is a 1/4-20 threaded SS screw, right*? havent had a problem yet and i have been using RRS plates since 1991. i've had a lot of stuff hanging off of a lot of things one might not trust, including me.
* and that all will be determined by what you purchased and who they source their parts from.

Thanks sjms
Yes, I was aware QD came from weapons and have only purchased the QD male end from Magpul which I think originated it. And the attachment is to an RRS L plate on the a7r3 and another on the Kirk plate for my a1 which I actually prefer over the RRS one as it has a silver lining to make it stand out.
As for 1 vs 2 handed, yes, both of mine are somewhat 2-handed with one holding the camera and the other depressing the end of the male QD part. The one I linked does have a different mechanism for release which made the belt concept potentially work.
I too have them on straps for now but just wondered if this could/would work to offload the shoulders and place the weight on the hips with a secure but not $2-300 attachment system.

If you don't mind, where did you find swivels testing to 800 lbs?
Can you identify the 3 straps in your photo (the one on the right appears to be the Magpul MS4 Gen2 Dual QD, which I have, but I don't recognize the others) and say a few words about pros and cons of each from your experience?

ALG Defense, manufactured in PA. i have a few of these too. not cheap. they have the occasional sale on them. load claim is such that its well over a relevance level for real world usage.
the other 2 straps were and are made by LumaLabs in Oregon. one is an older revision (foam/fabric shoulder setup) and one is a recent one with leather at the shoulder point rest.
the reason i liked them is that they were and are simple, lighter, modular, adjustable for sizing and support parts replacement and to a degree type of attachment system updating. my oldest one is over 8 years still in use by my daughter.
the ALG FFS as weighed by me on my pretty accurate super-duper electronic kitchen scale is 0.6oz and a Magpul standard steel is 0.9oz.

on the use of the QDM. yes, it has a "faster" connect/disconnect but that can be a 2 bladed sword. it has easier access and pull and that can be problematic. the QD as such makes one think of what they are about to do. more deliberate an action has to be made. i prefer optimized for safety over speed. some things you don't want to make too easy.

yes it can, but not much play. needs refinement. like i said about the pull check. just miss once. not the way i would want to carry it. as long as you can ensure 100% connect/lock doesn't look too comfortable for wandering. then there's when it's time to move it around to the back to prevent contact with other objects. by the way you aren't trying something new there.
both the PD and the spider drop into a wedge or a cup set up.

Switched to a leather belt and works much better. My one concern is that the QD button on the back can push against the belt but I did that a few times and couldn't get it to release the camera.
Otherwise not uncomfortable. Might do in combo with looser shoulder strap the first few times but goal was mostly to take weight off shoulders while also making it easier to run two bodies at upcoming high school football games. This would be good for the a7r3 with a 35/1.8 for wider sideline shots.

i don't know how or when you are going to use it but there might be a way i am working on with a belt setup. for me the bandolier is fine. i don't need 2 bodies on my body. the belt of course needs to be stiff so i'd look into a Think Tank newer skin belt v3, a Lowe protactic utility belt or a mil/police duty belt. i am thinking all season wear so the size of the belt will need to be variable and remain stiff. i have to whip up a prototype later.
back with a dummy setup:
belt you may want somewhat padded
it will be a slide on on said belt
it will hang an inch or so below the bottom of the belt for higher rotation it can be higher if one wants it that way. it is ambidextrous so either side or as you wish both.

Hi everyone. I thought to jump in on this old string and throw my solution into the mix. I believe this will be great news for anyone that loves the QD system and hates neck straps.
I started experimenting with ways to connect QD clips to my hip belts earlier this year. It took a bit of sourcing and a lot of hoofing, but I believe I've got most of the main problems solved and thought to ask if any FM members would like to help me do some testing and R&D in exchange for a manufacture pricing.
Is the okay? Sorry I don't post much.
lmk if you have any questions. cheers and thank you!

Hi Allan. I have the Atlas Adventure pack. I have my own QD swivel as well. Can you let me know what do I need to purchase so I can use it with my bag?
p.1 #18 · QD alternative to spider/peak design belt style holders?
Hi Sathya.
You got the adventure hip belt with your pack and this belt has the MOLLE webbing loops. When you say you have a QD swivel, are you meaning the QD socket on your gear? Sony A1, Sony 600GM F4 GM, Sony 70-200 F2.8 GMII?
If so, you would just need a couple of the CLICK QD camera clips and a fidlock magnetic buckle and you will be all set.
If you have another type of QD Swivel, chances are it’s not rated for a single point connection. Most are not load bearing and release easily.
LMK.
Thanks
Allan.

Not really replying to the belt solution but to QD connections in general. I have been using them for a few years with various companies clips. They all seem to work great. I have the Luma Loop, Magpull and one other and they all appear to be very secure. I have Kirk plates as well as an integrated bottom plate for my A7RV.

The hip belt part is important context. Secure with two connection points is very different from secure when you have it on a hip belt and it’s a single connection point. The main factor is the housing the protects the button from accidentally getting pressed and the pressure required to release the pins.
RRS and Kirk both have specific QD version I consider secure but they don’t offer any means to connect to a hip belt. Magpull created QD and doesn’t offer a single point connection and Luma is no longer in business.
